Calling Andersen just a bakery feels a little misleading once you walk inside. It's huge and level 2 has a proper restaurant space where you can order much more. There are so many breads, Danish pastries and sweets lined up that I spent far too long going backwards and forwards before deciding what I actually wanted. This is definitely not the place where I'd confidently walk in and buy one thing. What I liked was that there were plenty of simple breads alongside all the prettier pastries, so it didn't feel like everything was made just to look good in a photo. I ended up getting a few different things with coffee and sharing them so I could try more. Mitaki was already much quieter than the Hiroshima sights I'd been visiting, but autumn made the walk through the temple grounds particularly beautiful. There were red and orange leaves around the paths, old stone steps and little statues, with the vermilion pagoda occasionally appearing through the trees. I liked that the autumn colours weren't confined to one garden or one famous photo spot. I kept finding them as I walked further uphill, sometimes mixed with moss and darker green trees, and the small waterfalls added another change of scenery. There were other people around, but it never felt overwhelmingly busy. The olive trees are heavy with fruit, and harvest season is just around the corner. Surrounded by the rich fragrance of olives, I headed to "Michi-no-Eki Shodoshima Olive Park" 🌿🫒 Stepping into the grounds feels like wandering into the pages of a picture book! The Hiroshima Flea Market isn't a regularly scheduled event, happening only two or three times a year. Because of this, it’s quite rare to catch it while traveling in Japan. However, ever since visiting Hiroshima for the Setouchi Triennale last year, I’ve been longing to experience its unique atmosphere. During my visit this past January, I happened to time it perfectly. Thanks to my sister's boyfriend, a Hiroshima local, we drove about 25 minutes from the city to the LECT shopping center for the market. This place is truly a pilgrimage site for market enthusiasts or those with experience in event organizing. While the setup isn't overly flashy—with stall names printed simply on small white boards—the overall atmosphere is incredibly pleasant. The layout flows well, and although the venue isn't massive, it's the kind of place where you can easily lose track of time. After about an hour of browsing, we headed back into the LECT mall to grab a bite. We went for some freshly made onigiri. With a Tsutaya Books also inside the mall, you could easily spend an entire day here. (Word has it that a massive cold front hit the next day, bringing snow to all of Hiroshima. Shukkeien Garden is 15 min north on foot from the park, ¥260 adult, 9:00–18:00, last entry 17:30. I did it in reverse order from most visitors: Shukkeien first at 8:40 (paid ¥260 cash), walked the stroll-pond path—miniature mountains, a tea arbor, the bridge where the maple arches—for 70 minutes alone, then walked south to the Peace Park by 10:30. The garden is the exhale; the park is the inhale. At the Cenotaph I bowed, didn’t photograph the registry, rang no bell loudly. The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons—from cherry blossoms in the spring to vibrant foliage in the autumn—so you'll never be disappointed whenever you visit. It's easily accessible by car or bus, making it perfect for snapping some Instagram-worthy photos or simply soaking in nature's tranquility. Afterwards, you can check the tide schedule and take a short walk to Uzu no Michi to witness the famous whirlpools. · For a full panoramic shot of the Onaruto Bridge, the best photo spot is right in the center of the main observatory. · Pairing the ocean views with seasonal cherry blossoms or autumn leaves creates an absolutely dreamy composition. Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Fuji, Hiroshima, Kamakura, Himeji… and suddenly you're spending half your vacation at train stations. For a first-timer, I'd build an itinerary not around hitting the maximum number of cities, but around three different sides of Japan: modern, historical, and peaceful. 1 • TOKYO — 3–4 DAYS You don't go to Tokyo for just one specific landmark. It's all about experiencing the contrasts: Asakusa → the old city vibes Shibuya → modern Tokyo Shinjuku → skyscrapers and nightlife Harajuku + Meiji Jingu → the city meeting the greenery Kagurazaka / Kiyosumi-Shirakawa → more laid-back neighborhoods Don't try to cram ten neighborhoods into two days. Tokyo is massive, and bouncing around too much will eat up your time fast. 2 • ONE DAY TRIP FROM TOKYO Pick just one. 🌊 Kamakura If you want temples, the Great Buddha, and the ocean. 🗻 Fuji Five Lakes area If seeing Mt. THE LOGIC OF THE FIRST HALF 🏙 Tokyo 3–4 days → 🌊 Kamakura or 🗻 Fuji → 🚅 Kyoto 3 days Right here, you've already got a metropolis, temples, old quarters, nature, and the Shinkansen. 4 • NARA OR UJI It's super easy to take a day trip from Kyoto. 🦌 Nara If you're looking for Todai-ji, Kasuga Taisha, the deer park, and a large historical complex. 🍵 Uji If you want a slower-paced day: Byodo-in, matcha, the river, and smaller temples. For a short itinerary, just pick one. 5 • OSAKA — 1–2 DAYS I'd save Osaka for the grand finale. After the temple-heavy vibe of Kyoto, the contrast hits perfectly: Shinsekai → Namba → Dotonbori Food, neon signs, vibrant nightlife, and a completely different urban personality. And if you have an extra day, it's easy to take a trip from Osaka to Himeji for the castle and Koko-en Garden. 10-DAY ITINERARY Days 1–3 • Tokyo Day 4 • Kamakura / Fuji Days 5–7 • Kyoto Day 8 • Nara / Uji Days 9–10 • Osaka You end up with three home bases: Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka. And that's way more important than the total number of cities. WHAT I WOULD AVOID ADDING ❌ Hiroshima for just one evening just to check it off the list ❌ Takayama + Kanazawa if it means cutting Kyoto short ❌ Doing Kamakura, Nara, Uji, and Himeji all at once on a short trip ❌ Booking a new hotel almost every single night ❌ Giving Tokyo 2 days and Kyoto 1 day just so you can squeeze in four more cities IF YOU HAVE 14 DAYS That's when you can start expanding your route. For example: Tokyo → Kamakura/Fuji → Kyoto → Uji → Nara → Osaka → Himeji → Hiroshima/Miyajima or head in a different direction: Tokyo → Matsumoto → Takayama → Kanazawa → Kyoto → Osaka. But for a first trip of 10 days, I wouldn't try to prove to myself that I "completed" Japan. Tokyo + Kyoto + Osaka plus 1–2 well-chosen side trips around them already give you several totally different versions of the country. Most importantly, after an itinerary like this, you'll actually feel like you've been to Japan, rather than just efficiently transiting through it.

Miyajima is absolutely spectacular Miyajima (officially Itsukushima) is the island near Hiroshima famous for the “floating” torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine, one of Japan’s most photographed sights. · Tides matter a lot. At high tide the gate appears to float on the water; at low tide it’s fully surrounded by sand and you can walk right up to it. Both are worth seeing if timing allows. · The shrine itself (Itsukushima Shrine) is built on stilts over the water too, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. · Deer roam freely on the island, similar to Nara, and are considered sacred messengers. · Mount Misen has a ropeway up, and the summit views over the Seto Inland Sea are spectacular — a good half-day add-on if you have time. · Momiji manju (maple-leaf shaped cakes, often filled with red bean or custard) are the local specialty — worth trying fresh. · It’s a short ferry ride from Miyajimaguchi, easily done as a day trip from Hiroshima.

📌 Quick Tips ✔️ Take the ferry from Miyajimaguchi. From Hiroshima Station, travel to Miyajimaguchi Station (JR) or Hiroden-Miyajimaguchi Station, then take a ferry to Miyajima. Ferries run frequently, so you usually won’t have to wait long. ✔️ Check the tide schedule before your visit. The famous floating torii gate looks completely different depending on the tide. At high tide it appears to float on the water, while at low tide you can walk right up to the gate. If your schedule allows, seeing both is highly recommended. ✔️ Miyajima is easy to explore on foot. The island isn’t very large, and most attractions are within walking distance from the ferry terminal. ✔️ Be careful around the deer. They look friendly and are great for photos, but don’t tease them with food or paper—they may bite or grab your belongings. ✔️ Don’t leave without trying oysters, Momiji Manju, and lemon specialties! ⸻ Miyajima is one of Japan’s most iconic destinations and is famous for its breathtaking scenery, friendly deer, delicious local food, and the world-famous Itsukushima Shrine. One thing many visitors don’t realize is that the scenery changes dramatically depending on the tide. During high tide, the torii gate appears to float magically on the sea. During low tide, you can actually walk all the way to the gate and admire its impressive size up close. If possible, check the tide schedule before your visit—or even better, plan your trip so you can experience both views. The shrine itself is also worth visiting, with its beautiful wooden corridors and peaceful atmosphere overlooking the sea. ⸻ 🦌 Meet Miyajima’s Famous Deer As you walk around the island, you’ll quickly notice the many wild deer roaming freely. They’re used to people and make great photo companions, but remember that they’re still wild animals. Avoid waving food or paper in front of them, and keep an eye on your belongings. ⸻ 🍋🦪 Must-Try Local Food Miyajima is well known for oysters, lemons, and Momiji Manju. One of our favorite drinks was the fresh lemonade from LIMONADA GEBURA. A fun bonus is that if you bring back your empty cup, you can get a refill for only ¥200, making it a great deal on a hot day. We also highly recommend the deep-fried oysters from GEBURA sœur. They were crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and easily one of the best things we ate on the island. Another must-try is Age Momiji (deep-fried Momiji Manju) from Momijido Main Store. Unlike the traditional Momiji Manju, the deep-fried version has a crispy outer layer with a warm, soft filling inside. It’s one of Miyajima’s signature snacks and something you won’t easily find elsewhere. On the other hand, we tried the grilled oysters at Yakigaki Jakee, and while they smelled amazing, the flavor didn’t quite meet our expectations. The city is infamous for the nuclear bomb dropped on it in August 1945 (Nagasaki followed three days later, but today's focus is on Hiroshima). According to various estimates, 70,000 to 80,000 people died instantly when the bomb detonated. By the end of 1945, including those who succumbed to radiation sickness, the total death toll reached around 166,000. Nearly all buildings within a four-kilometer radius of the epicenter were obliterated. Wind-whipped fires rapidly merged into a firestorm, reducing roughly 62,000 of the city's 90,000 buildings to ashes. A lesser-known fact is that the atomic bomb didn't hit the ground; it detonated with unimaginable force approximately 600 meters in the air. Clocks across the city froze forever at exactly 8:15 a.m. The exact spot on the ground directly below the explosion is known as the hypocenter, and that was the site of the Shima Hospital. In a fraction of a second, the building vanished, instantly wiping out all medical staff and patients inside—about 80 people in total. Dr. Shima himself happened to be away from the hospital at the time, which saved his life. Fortunately for many, he rushed back and immediately began treating the survivors as best as he could. Today, the Shima Clinic still operates on this very site, with his descendants carrying on his medical legacy. But perhaps the most chilling sight today is a bank building just 380 meters from the hypocenter: it somehow partially survived! I'll share photos from the museum later, showing the utter devastation of the city, yet the Bank of Japan building stood its ground! Across the river from the bank lies an island housing the Peace Memorial Park and the Peace Memorial Museum. As you walk through and read the exhibits, only one word comes to mind: terrifying. No other word can describe it. What makes it even more jarring are some tourist groups. They don't seem to listen to their guides or grasp the gravity of where they are. They laugh, pose for photos in front of the ruined bank or memorials, and practically climb all over them. I'm left speechless. One of the enduring symbols of this tragedy is a young girl named Sadako Sasaki. She wasn't at the epicenter when the bomb fell and appeared unharmed. She was only two years old at the time. However, a few years later, she was diagnosed with leukemia—the insidious aftermath of the blast had caught up with her. At age 11, she was given only a year to live. She heard a legend from somewhere and clung to it with all her heart: "If she could fold a thousand paper cranes, string them together into a massive garland, and sing a special ceremonial song—senbazuru—she would live," her brother Masahiro recalled. People constantly leave paper cranes at her memorial, and it's a mandatory visiting spot for school children. Another landmark I have to mention is the Peace Bell in the Peace Memorial Park. Anyone is welcome to ring it. I rang it too, making what I believe is a universal, heartfelt wish for us all. An inscription on the bell reads: "Let everyone passing by strike the bell, so that it will forever ring out a warning against the threat of atomic war." The bell's surface features a borderless world map, symbolizing a unified, "one world." The striking spot, where the wooden log hits the bell, bears the atomic energy symbol, representing the profound hope for the complete abolition of atomic and hydrogen bombs. The bell embodies the Hiroshima citizens' deep yearning for a peaceful world free from war and nuclear weapons, while honoring the victims of the atomic bombing. The core purpose of the bell is to inspire humanity to ban all nuclear arsenals, end conflicts, and live in harmony. I also want to highlight the Peace Clock Tower: Atop the tower sits a sphere with three clock faces pointing in different directions. According to the designer, this represents the entire world and all of humanity. The tower's three supporting pillars symbolize the hands of Hiroshima's people, joined together in a prayer for peace. Every single day at exactly 8:15 a.m., the chimes ring out—the exact moment the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. The chiming serves as a haunting reminder of the tragedy and a powerful plea for peace and the total elimination of nuclear weapons. In 1996, this solemn chime was selected by Japan's Ministry of the Environment as one of the "100 Soundscapes of Japan" to be preserved for future generations. It's heavy, I know.
