And when evening comes, · earning about the Gujo Odori dance culture that has continued for over 400 years · eft me slightly moved by the deep history of this town. ─────────‪─────────── While using the Fairfield by Marriott Gifu Gujo as my base, I stopped by Yamato Onsen Yasuragikan. Hotel guests can enter for an 800 yen admission fee! (You can buy tickets at the hotel's front desk 🎫) This place is a bit different from your average hot spring—its concept is "hot water play." The bed is plush and allows you to rest your body properly, and the lack of unnecessary elements makes it a very relaxing space. Gujo has a history of over 400 years and is famous for the Gujo Odori, one of Japan's three major Bon Odori dances. Geta (wooden clogs) are necessary for the Gujo Odori, and there are four reasons for this. ① To "keep the rhythm with sound" The Gujo Odori is a dance where foot movements are extremely important. That's where geta come in. · They make a "clink-clink" sound. · The sound becomes the rhythm. · It creates a sense of unity among the group. In other words, geta = part of the instrument. ② Designed for dancing for long periods (all night). The Gujo Odori is a culture of dancing all night long (all-night dancing). Strolling through them, the constant, gentle babble of water creates a quiet and relaxing atmosphere. The crystal-clear Yoshida River flows through the town. The light blue wooden building along the riverbank is a nostalgic landmark; walking along the banks and bridges lets you take in the interwoven scenery of the mountain town, flowing water, and historic houses. Must-sees on your old street stroll: 1. Igawa Komichi: A narrow walking path running alongside a community waterway, bordered by lush greenery and flowers—a cozy corner that really captures local life. (There are beautiful, large koi swimming in the water!) 2. Sogi Sui: Gujo Hachiman's most famous natural spring. It preserves traditional water-drawing facilities and stone features, giving visitors a sense of the culture where residents live in harmony with water. 3. Food Replica Shops: Gujo Hachiman is a major hub for making food replicas in Japan. Keychains shaped like sushi and desserts are incredibly realistic and cute, making perfect souvenirs. The shops also offer hands-on making experiences ranging from ¥1,500 to ¥2,400. Local eats: In the summer, you can enjoy charcoal-grilled salted sweetfish (ayu) or plan for river delicacies like grilled eel over rice, adding some delicious memories to your old street stroll.
