The Italian town of Ventimiglia lies just a stone's throw from the French border—a mere 15-minute train ride and you're in another country. A large bridge divides Ventimiglia into an old and a new town, offering breathtaking views of the sea shimmering in fantastic colors. While the new part of town features welcoming restaurants, inviting shops, and charming, brightly colored houses, old Ventimiglia is like a fortress with a maze of narrow streets, arches, and dark alleyways. Here, vibrant facades hide unique apartment buildings in the backyards, looking as though each flat was cobbled together by hand from whatever materials were available. The contrast is especially striking at sunset. As the sun sets, the old town is the first to be swallowed by darkness, while the modern part basks in the sunlight until the very last ray, later lighting up with a cheerful glow. It makes for a fantastic day trip from the neighboring French towns.

Tip: you can buy tickets directly on Trip.com and it works any train during the day. Our villa is a few minutes walk from Garavan Station. Up on a hill with amazing views from the balcony. Day 2 Menton: 25 minutes walk or the Zest Bus to old city. Market is small but some good stalls; a few really good bakeries: Mitron, Atelier, worth trying a selection. Shopping, museums, and strangely dressed instagramers on the steps. Beach is busy but great to swim. Day 3 take bus to Castellar, have lunch in the village (only two options but both amazing) and then hike to GR52 and down to Menton Garavan station. Day 4 take Zou train to Ventimiglia. Market is super busy and very nice fresh food. Bought a lot of stuffed fresh pasta and various vegetables. Went up the old town with many steps. Train back in afternoon and go to the beach for another dip. Day 5 take Zou train to Roquebrune Cap St Martin and walk alone the coast back to Menton. Day 6 Take the bus and visit Maison Gannac. Amazing farm and best jams. Day 7 return to Nice How to get around: Zou Train, Zest Buses, walking, Pony Bikes Must-see attractions: Cap st Martin, including Eileen Gray House, GR52, Menton Old Town, Art Deco Tour (various buildings near the train station area). Accommodation guide: villas on hills with pool Food guide: Mitron Bakery’s Brioche Feuilleté, La Galion, etc. Shopping guide: lemon scrub soaps, perfume with Orange flavour scents, etc. Art books.

During my trip to Menton in the South of France, I took a short train ride to Ventimiglia, Italy. It's a place where you can easily travel back and forth between France and Italy in just 20 minutes by train, separated by the Mediterranean Sea! This was a perfect course for a hassle-free day trip during my South of France journey. I spent a relaxing time at a bakery café located right by the beach, enjoying a refreshing Aperol Spritz 🍹. The price was astonishing—just 6 euros for a generous plate of appetizers along with the drink. It was so satisfying that I naturally ordered another glass, feeling a small moment of happiness 😊. While strolling through Menton, I felt a desire to catch a glimpse beyond the French border. What is it like in Italy? I had briefly studied the city on Google Maps beforehand but found nothing remarkable (though reality proved otherwise), except for a paleontological museum that soon exceeded all my expectations. Upon reaching the museum, I first decided to take a short walk along the sea. The museum is located near the incredibly beautiful Balzi Rossi beach. Making my way through the bushes along the sea, I entered the Punta d'u Darsenùn nature reserve, where I was greeted by a stunning view of Spiaggia del Darsenún beach. Cacti, palm trees, conifers, and the waves of the azure sea captured my heart. Since the path along the sea was inaccessible further on, I returned to the Museo preistorico dei "Balzi Rossi" e zona archeologica. It turned out that in this museum, you can see the remains of people who lived here 24,000 years ago. You can also explore caves, whose triangular elongated shape and soot resemble Catholic Gothic cathedrals. As "forbidden fruit is sweet," and I was very curious about what lay around the corner that I couldn't reach, I decided to close this chapter and return to Ventimiglia the next day by train. Upon arriving at the station, I explored the nearby surroundings a bit and then set off on foot to Menton directly along the SS1 highway. First, I reached a picturesque suburb called Latte, from where I had a stunning view. Admiring the mountains covered in lush greenery, I continued my journey and descended to a deserted beach, where, naturally, there was no one during the off-season. I reached the Giardini Botanici Hanbury, which, of course, I couldn't enter because it was already closed to visitors (another unfinished chapter). But I had the chance to walk in complete solitude and silence in the Suta au Cian nature reserve. And so, I once again arrived at the familiar Balzi Rossi beach. I spread out a blanket, took out my favorite blue cheese, and watched the sun set, ending its workday. Gazing at the caves, I imagined how people lived here tens of thousands of years ago and thanked the day for allowing me to see so much beauty. Ventimiglia exceeded all my expectations.

The market is brimming with fresh fruits, cheeses, herbs, and wines, accompanied by the lively voices of the vendors. Latin music flows through the streets, and colorful clothes sway in the breeze on laundry lines stretched across the sky.
