The moment I arrived, I was amazed by the elegant Baroque architecture, beautiful gardens, and peaceful atmosphere away from the crowds. Built in the 17th century, the palace was designed with a fascinating connection to time and the cosmos. Its architecture incorporates symbolic numbers representing the days of the year, hours of the day, and seasons, making it much more than just a beautiful building. I enjoyed wandering through the palace grounds, where peacocks freely roamed the gardens and tree-lined paths created a relaxing escape from the city. The interiors were equally impressive, filled with historic rooms, intricate decorations, and a sense of royal grandeur. What surprised me most was how few tourists were there compared to other famous European palaces. It felt like discovering a secret piece of Austria's history. Schloss Eggenberg is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing that includes Graz's historic center, highlighting its cultural importance. There are no glass display cases here; tens of thousands of weapons and armors are displayed in rows. Immersive "Forest of Steel": The armory was built between 1642 and 1645. In the four-story wooden hall, armor, swords, and spears are stacked from floor to ceiling, preserving the original warehouse appearance from 400 years ago, creating a powerful visual impact. "Official Certification" on the Armor: Many breastplates have dents, which are not battle damage but marks of "quality inspection" from back then. After the blacksmith finished making the armor, a musketeer would shoot at it from 10 meters away. Only armor that could withstand the shot was considered qualified and sent to the battlefield. Luxurious Warhorse Armor: Not only did people wear armor, but warhorses also had full sets of "metal exoskeletons." A set of horse armor weighs over 40 kilograms and was a symbol of noble cavalry status, even more expensive than the soldiers' equipment. Elected European Capital of Culture in 2003, some facilities are still in place and give the city a certain originality. 1. The Schlossberg Nothing better to start your visit to Graz than to observe it from above! Direction the Schlossberg, a hill culminating at 123 meters and overlooking the city where you can enjoy a superb panorama. To get there from Graz city center, you have the following options: On foot from Schlossbergplatz square, allow about 30 minutes to climb the 260 steps By elevator, which will take you inside the hill By funicular, starting from the Place de l’Empereur François-Joseph to the summit. Schlossberg means “Castle Mountain”, because at the time, there was indeed a castle on the hill. Until the 19th century, the Schlossberg served as a military post and refuge for the inhabitants of Graz in the event of enemy attacks. Napoleonic troops never managed to take it. 2. I was back there two years ago .The beauty of it is that you never tire of the classic views, while always finding something new. In my case, the ARGOS building by Zaha Hadid had finally been completed and there's a Red Bull Racing car attached to the rocky walls of the Schloßberg. The moss is the limestone understory: Tilia and ash with Neckera on the cliff seep-lines 2 cm thick, 8°C in April, a black grouse on the meadow edge, the Enns tributary Johnsbach grey over limestone. The Johnsbach Waterfall (15 min walk from the village) has moss on the spray rocks 1 cm thick; above it the Hesshütte path climbs through mossy spruce. I ate a €5 Admont bakery krapfen, sat at the waterfall base 09:10, the moss on the fallen lime trunk silver with spray, the 2,369 m Hochtor wall dead ahead. Mistake: I tried the Klettersteig in May — snow patch on the steel cable, turned back; Jun–Oct only for the ferrata, valley floor is fine Apr–Nov. #bucketlistdestinations Vienna gets most of the attention, but Graz made me think Austria's smaller cities deserve much more space on a European bucket list. The historic center is full of colorful buildings, courtyards and narrow streets, but the city doesn't feel stuck in the past. Modern architecture appears right beside centuries-old buildings, creating a combination that shouldn't work as well as it does. My favorite view was from Schlossberg. You can walk or ride up and suddenly the entire city opens below you - red rooftops, church towers and mountains in the distance. The famous Clock Tower is up there too, but honestly, the panorama was the highlight for me. Graz also felt noticeably more relaxed than Vienna. There was plenty to see without the pressure of rushing between huge attractions all day. Would I recommend Graz instead of Vienna on a first trip to Austria? Probably not. Would I recommend adding it instead of spending every day in Vienna? Absolutely.
