Along the way, you’ll pass flower seas, wetlands, and snow mountain reflections. About 3 days total, suitable for experienced outdoor enthusiasts 🏔️. Friendly reminder: If the core area is still closed, don’t climb over fences! You’ll be fined and blacklisted. We just completed this journey ourselves, and before boarding I spent weeks trying to understand permits, tickets, trains, altitude, luggage and what to expect. Here’s the guide I wish I had. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🏔️ WHY START IN XINING? ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Most travelers don’t realize this: The train technically starts in other Chinese cities, but Xining is where the famous Tibet Railway really begins. After Xining the train starts climbing onto the Tibetan Plateau. Foreign travelers cannot simply buy a ticket and enter Tibet. If you have physical strength, hiking is a better option. Local Tibetans generally do not speak Chinese, and most of them can only communicate in body language. The eight cities below are easy to reach, simple to explore, and perfect for a quick getaway. 01 Baicheng | Jilin Let's start with a niche one. Baicheng is in the northwest corner of Jilin. Many people pass through it on their way to Inner Mongolia, not realizing that the Da'an Nenjiang Bay is worth a detour. ⏰ Arrive at 9:00 AM. The mist over the river hasn't cleared yet, and water birds are skimming the reeds—no filter needed. 📍 Da'an Nenjiang Bay Tourist Area is about a 1-hour drive from downtown Baicheng. Driving is the most convenient option; public transport is infrequent, so don't count on catching a taxi on the fly. The wetland boardwalk is flat and smooth, making it easy to push a stroller or walk with elderly family members. 🍜 Head back to the city center at noon for a bowl of lamb soup with sesame flatbread. The soup is clear and mild, a local breakfast staple. There are many mosquitoes in the wetlands, so ⚠️ be sure to bring mosquito repellent in the summer, and long pants are more practical than skirts. The light on the west side of the bay is best at sunset, perfect for taking silhouettes. 02 Changsha | Hunan Changsha is perfect for those "figure it out when you get there" weekends. Transportation is incredibly convenient; take the subway directly from the high-speed railway station into the city without needing to do much homework. ⏰ Head up Yuelu Mountain early in the morning. Enter from the East Gate to avoid crowds and enjoy the cool air. Looking back at the Xiang River from halfway up the mountain offers a better view than the summit. On your way down, stop by the Hunan Museum. ⚠️ Remember to book in advance through official channels; you likely won't get in if you just show up. In the afternoon, visit Tianxin Pavilion. The city walls aren't high, but standing on the pavilion looking out over the sea of old rooftops feels very "Changsha." 🍜 Don't just focus on trendy spots at night; the stir-fried pork with rice in the alleys around Pozi Street is more authentic. Huaminglou is in Ningxiang, far from the city center. If you want to go, set aside a full day; don't try to squeeze it into a day with city attractions. 03 Lijiang | Yunnan Lijiang Old Town needs no introduction, but I want to share some practical tips. ⏰ The Old Town is only truly itself before 7:00 AM—the stone paths are damp, shops are closed, and only street cleaners and dog walkers are out. 📍 For photos of the reflection of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in Black Dragon Pool Park, you have to go early when the water is calm. Visit the Mu Residence in the afternoon when it's less crowded and you can actually hear the guide. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is at a high altitude, so ⚠️ don't push yourself. Prepare oxygen canisters and a thick jacket as needed. It's common for fog to roll in on the mountain in the afternoon, making it hard to see the main peak. Choose accommodation in the alleys on the edge of the Old Town for a quieter stay that's easier to navigate with luggage. 🍜 Look for restaurants with lots of locals for the cured pork rib hot pot; don't eat in the center of the bar street. 04 Golog | Qinghai This trip to Golog is for those who truly want to clear their minds. The First Bend of the Yellow River is in the Madoi direction. It's at a high altitude, so ⏰ I suggest arriving in the morning when the light is slanted and the river bends are clearly visible. Driving is the main choice. 🚄 It's a long way from Xining, so leave enough time and don't make your schedule too tight. The scenery—grasslands, prayer flags, and yaks—is all on the road. ⚠️ Don't try to tough out altitude sickness. Rest well beforehand, walk slowly, and think carefully before bringing elderly people or children. 🍜 Food is simple; yak yogurt and tsampa will keep you full. The taste is on the sour side. There's no "fancy" way to play here; it's just about watching the sky, the water, and the clouds, and taking it slow. 05 Urumqi | Xinjiang A weekend in Urumqi starts with a hearty breakfast. 📍 Start by exploring the International Grand Bazaar. Stalls of naan, dried fruits, and handicrafts are everywhere. Don't haggle too aggressively; just keep it reasonable. ⏰ Head to Red Hill in the evening to see the city and the Tianshan Mountains in the same frame; the light is soft. It's windy in Dabancheng, so ⚠️ bundle up with a hat and scarf, or you might really get blown away. The Grand Bazaar pedestrian street is liveliest at night—try the baked buns, pilaf, and yogurt rice cakes one by one. This city is great for first-timers to Xinjiang; transportation is mature, and you can set your own pace. 🍜 For authentic hand-pulled noodles, head toward residential areas; it's more cost-effective than in tourist spots. 06 Tangshan | Hebei Tangshan is easily underestimated. The Qing East Tombs are worth a separate trip. ⏰ Go in the morning. The tomb area is large and involves a lot of walking, so wear comfortable shoes. The architecture and stone carvings are detailed and worth a slow, careful look. 📍 Nanhu Park and Kailuan National Mine Park are in the city center; combining industrial heritage with lake views makes for a perfect evening stroll. ⚠️ The Qing East Tombs are in Zunhua, not close to downtown Tangshan. Driving or carpooling is more convenient; don't rely on finding a bus on the spot. 🍜 Tangshan sugar twists and chess-shaped sesame cakes make great souvenirs. This city is perfect for a trip with parents—the pace is slow, the sights are solid, and it's not exhausting. 07 Jinan | Shandong The beauty of Jinan lies in its authenticity. For the Spring City area, ⏰ go in the morning. The springs are bubbling, and locals bring buckets to collect water—the local life is more interesting than the sights themselves. Climb Thousand Buddha Mountain in the afternoon; it's not high, and you can reach the top in an hour to look back at the city view. 📍 The old streets around the East Gate of Baotu Spring are full of homes built around springs. ⚠️ It's crowded on weekends during peak season. If you want to see the spring eyes in peace, get there when it opens. 🍜 Sweet foam soup, oil swirls, and braised pork are a solid breakfast. Jinan is suitable for short trips; the attractions are concentrated, and two days are enough. 08 Shiyan | Hubei Shiyan's confidence comes from Wudang Mountain. ⏰ To avoid the crowds, take the first bus up the mountain. Seeing the clouds clear over the Golden Summit is worth the price of admission. 📍 It's windy on Wudang Mountain, especially near the Golden Summit, so ⚠️ be sure to bring a jacket—it's cool even in summer. Choose between the cable car and hiking; if your fitness is average, take the cable car both ways and don't push yourself. 🍜 Have a bowl of "three-in-one" soup at the foot of the mountain; it's sour, spicy, and appetizing. This city is perfect for those who want to hike but also want some peace and quiet. You set the pace. Eight cities, eight ways to travel. Don't want crowds over National Day? These 6️⃣ small towns are perfect for a 3-day stay 01 Xiangtan | Hunan Many people go to Shaoshan during National Day, but most do it as a day trip; staying overnight feels much quieter. ⏰ Arrive at the Shaoshan scenic area before 8 AM and the bronze statue square won't be filled with tour groups yet, so you won't have to fight for photo spots. 📍 Caojia'ao Waterfall is in Xiangtan County, about a 1-hour drive. The flow is strongest after rain, and it's great for kids to wade in. ⚠️ Don't wear white shoes — the muddy roads will ruin them. 🍜 The rice noodle shop at the Jianshe Road intersection only serves the morning market. It opens at 6:30 AM and closes at 9 AM, and the portions are generous. If you stay 3 days: day 1 Shaoshan, day 2 the waterfall plus wandering the city, day 3 tea at Yaowan Old Street. The pace is relaxed and suitable for bringing seniors. 02 Zhuhai | Guangdong Zhuhai is perfect for a laid-back National Day, but Chimelong International Ocean Resort will be packed. ⏰ Head straight for the whale shark exhibit when the park opens. After 10 AM the lines can loop twice. Don't drive on Lover's Road; rent a bike and ride from the seaside swimming area to the Sun and Moon Shell, and the sea breeze at dusk is just right. 📍 The City Balcony stretch is the least crowded and the sunset photo spots are cleaner than the Love Post Office. ⚠️ Buy Chimelong tickets online at least 3 days in advance — on-site windows are more expensive and slower. If you stay in Hengqin, go to the city for dim sum the next day; a taxi is about 40 minutes. Three days works well: one day at Chimelong, one day Lover's Road plus New Yuanming Palace, and one day round trip to Wailingding Island. Families with kids should save Chimelong for the last day so the kids don't get wiped out. 03 Xinzhou | Shanxi Xinzhou is a great choice to avoid crowds over National Day, except for Mount Wutai. ⏰ Enter Mount Wutai before 7 AM; private cars are restricted in the afternoon, so avoid getting stuck. Yanmen Pass is best in the afternoon when the wall's shadows stretch long and the wind is strong — 📌 bring a jacket. Laoniu Bay in Pianguan is at a Yellow River bend; sunset is better than sunrise, and a farmhouse stay is about CNY 200 a night. 🍜 In Xinzhou ancient city, try Dingxiang steamed pork and Baode wan tuo, but don't buy them on the main street — go into the alleys to save about 30%. ⚠️ Mount Wutai tickets and shuttle-bus tickets are sold separately; follow the official daily announcements. Driving is easiest; public transport will eat up half a day. 04 Golog | Qinghai For Golog, just visiting the first bend of the Yellow River is reason enough to stay 3 days. The grasslands are already yellow at National Day, but the sky is unbelievably blue. ⏰ Arrive at the viewpoint around 4 PM for slanted light on the river — photos straight from your phone look great. 📍 It's about a 2-hour drive from Maqin County. Road conditions are average; low-slung cars should go slowly. The altitude is 3,600 m, ⚠️ so don't shower the first night, and if you get a headache don't push through. 🍜 There are many Sichuan restaurants in town. Try Tibetan food once, but butter tea is salty — don't force it. Stay in Maqin county; a standard room over National Day is about CNY 300, book early. Good for photographers and anyone seeking quiet. Be cautious with kids and seniors — altitude sickness doesn't care about age. Three days is for taking it slow, not for rushing. 05 Chifeng | Inner Mongolia Chifeng isn't crowded over National Day, and the Hashtatu stone array scenic area is the main attraction. ⏰ Arrive before 10 AM to avoid backlighting on the stones and to see the textures clearly. 📍 The walking loop in the park takes about 2 hours.
