The park in Gatchina was conceived as a landscape or "English" park, imitating a natural landscape. The park can be divided into several parts: an English garden and a private garden, lower and upper Dutch and botanical gardens, a flower garden, water and forest labyrinths, and the Island of Love. Under Paul I, an Admiralty was even built to store sailing and rowing vessels used for mock naval battles on the lake.

Hotel Gatchina is the perfect choice for a family getaway, a romantic trip, or a business stay. It features a classic interior design, and everything is spotlessly clean with a pleasant scent. We were greeted with a smile at the front desk, and check-in took just a few minutes. In the hotel lobby, right next to the reception, there's a vintage car from 1926. You'll also find lounge areas perfect for relaxing or chatting, complete with comfortable, soft leather armchairs and sofas. The hallways are decorated with historical photographs of Gatchina. 🛏️ We booked a double room and were upgraded to a spacious room with a double bed and two windows—even the bathroom had a window! The room was equipped with everything we needed: a mini-fridge, a hairdryer, a kettle, cups, slippers, and complimentary shampoo, shower gel, and soap packets. The bed linens and towels were bright white. An iron, an ironing board, and a water cooler are conveniently located in the hallway on every floor. On the ground floor, there's a shared kitchen with a kettle and a microwave. You can make yourself a cup of tea or coffee anytime, or grab a quick bite with the whole family at the spacious dining table. 🍳 Breakfast is served buffet-style in the ground-floor restaurant. However, the chef personally offers you a choice of hot dishes, such as omelets, fried eggs, porridge, or crepes with cottage cheese or meat (you can order as much as you want, with no limits). There’s a great variety of pastries and fresh fruits, including apples, oranges, grapefruits, and watermelon. This unique palace in Gatchina was built by order of Emperor Paul I for the Knights of the Order of Malta. The palace is exceptional because it is constructed from ordinary rammed earth and completely lacks classical symmetry. It looks remarkably different from every angle. From the Black Lake, it resembles a medieval fortress rising out of the water; from the north, it looks like an austere Gothic monastery; and from the main entrance, it feels like a cozy country estate. The soaring Gothic bell tower visually ties the palace's diverse architectural composition together. Today, the palace serves as the iconic landmark of Gatchina. The palace is quite small, and a leisurely tour will take no more than an hour. One of the main exhibits is a large portrait of Paul I in the robes of the Grand Master of the Order of Malta, painted by the artist S. Tonci. The first floor features exhibition halls where you can explore the layout of the small rooms and marvel at the thick load-bearing walls. A narrow spiral staircase leads upstairs, and along the way, you can spot a small glass door leading into the tower. The second floor houses a permanent exhibition dedicated to the Order of Malta and the history of the castle's construction. The palace sits right on the shore of the Black Lake. We drove from Moscow to Gatchina, arriving in the evening. After checking into our hotel, we went for a stroll in the park. Good to know: entrance to the park is free after 8:00 PM! Our plan was to wander around and explore part of the park during the golden hour on our first evening. Then, the next day, we’d visit the Great Gatchina Palace, explore the rest of the park, and check out the pavilions. This turned out to be a brilliant idea because the park was virtually empty that evening. We enjoyed a peaceful walk, admired the palace and the lakes, and snapped some gorgeous photos. We kicked off our evening stroll at the entrance right next to the palace. We crossed the palace square, checked out the monument to Paul I, and made our way to the Karpin Bridge. The bridge offers an absolutely stunning view of the palace. Next, we wandered past the ruins of the Gatchina Admiralty toward the Water Maze. The views of the lakes and the palace from the park's many little bridges were breathtaking. We eventually reached the Island of Love, home to the Pavilion of Venus and the Birch House. We left the park through the exit near the old Printing House, which leads right onto Sobornaya Street, Gatchina's main pedestrian thoroughfare. Our leisurely walk took about two hours, including plenty of stops for photos. The following day, we toured the Great Gatchina Palace (I’ve got a separate post about that!) and then picked up where we left off in the park. We headed back to the Island of Love, where the Pavilion of Venus seems to rise straight out of the water. Admission to this pavilion is included in your park ticket. Inside, there’s a short audio guide that shares the history of the spot, along with some fascinating albums of vintage photos. After that, we popped into the Birch House—a whimsical "surprise pavilion" that looks like a stack of birch logs on the outside but reveals a lavish hall inside. This is also covered by the park ticket. We spent the rest of our time exploring another section of the park, checking out the abandoned Orangery, the Cold Bath, and the Chesma Obelisk before looping back to the Palace. It was a jam-packed and fascinating day. The park also has a boat rental station, so you can row around the many lakes and take in the views from the water. There’s a cozy little cafe and restrooms on-site, and there are helpful signposts everywhere. Komarovo and Repino (Gulf of Finland) A fantastic choice for a waterside retreat. The crisp sea air, long sandy beaches, and pine forests will make you feel like you're on a proper vacation.
