A 10 yuan ticket lets you stay all afternoon. 05 Dongying | Shandong The Yellow River Estuary Ecotourism Area is prime birdwatching season in autumn. ⏰ At 4:30 PM, the sunset turns the entire reed marsh golden, with flocks of migratory birds lined up on the mudflats. ⚠️ The scenic area is huge. Walking will wear you out, so take the scenic area shuttle bus for 15 yuan per person to connect several birdwatching spots. 🍜 After birdwatching, head to downtown for Yellow River hairy crabs. The fattest season is mid-September to late October. One costs 30–40 yuan. The steamed crab’s sweetness is unmistakable. 🚄 Dongying has no direct high-speed train. It’s about 2.5 hours by car from Jinan. If you take the train to Dongying Station, a taxi to downtown costs about 20 yuan. Stay downtown and visit the scenic area early the next day. 06 Zhuhai | Guangdong Chimelong International Ocean Resort is twice as enjoyable when you avoid weekends. ⏰ On weekdays, start at the whale shark pavilion in the morning. The huge blue glass wall is almost empty, perfect for quietly watching for 10 minutes. ⚠️ Weekends and holidays are so crowded it’s overwhelming. Lines for one attraction start at an hour. 🚄 Take the intercity rail from Guangzhou South Station to Zhuhai Station—70 minutes. There’s a dedicated shuttle from the station to Chimelong. In the evening, visit Lovers’ Road. The sea breeze is cool at dusk. Rent a shared bike on the road next to the Fisher Girl statue, enjoy the sea breeze and lights. It’s free and very romantic. For lodging, stay near Gongbei Port, where many budget hotels under 200 yuan are available. 07 Quzhou | Zhejiang At Kaihua Gen Palace Buddhist Kingdom, every root carving tells a story. ⏰ Before 10 AM, sunlight through the glass ceiling lights up the carvings’ textures clearly, leaving you speechless. ⚠️ The area is large. Walking the whole route takes at least two hours. Wear comfortable shoes. 🚄 A taxi from Quzhou Station to Kaihua County takes about 40 minutes. Shared rides cost 50 yuan per person. Jianglang Mountain and Nianbadu are an hour away by car. Visit Nianbadu ancient town at dusk. The stone paths are polished shiny, with almost no tourists. Buy a 2 yuan baked cake to eat while walking. If time is tight, just visit Gen Palace Buddhist Kingdom. Jianglang Mountain’s hike is more strenuous. 08 Lanzhou | Gansu Lanzhou mornings start with a bowl of beef noodles. ⏰ Eat around 7 AM when the noodles are most chewy and the broth richest. White Pagoda Hill Park by the Yellow River offers free panoramic views from the top. 🍜 At night, Nanguan Night Market sells lamb skewers for 3 yuan each, shiny and delicious. ⚠️ The original “Flying Horse” bronze at the provincial museum is displayed irregularly. Check the exhibit schedule before you go to avoid seeing only replicas. 🚄 Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport is far from downtown. Take the intercity rail to Lanzhou Station for 17 yuan, saving about 100 yuan compared to a taxi. Stay near Xiguan Cross for easy access everywhere.
