Istanbul in 2 Days: A City Between Two Continents and Two Eras
When East meets West
Istanbul is more than just a city. It's the border between Europe and Asia, between Islam and Christianity, between the Ottoman Empire and modernity. It's a city where the muezzin's call to prayer resounds over European architecture, where you can have breakfast in Europe and lunch in Asia, where history hides around every corner.
13 million people. 2,000 years of history. 4,000+ mosques. The Bosphorus, which cuts the city in half. The Grand Bazaar with its 4,000 shops. And the feeling of being in another world.
You won't see all of Istanbul in two days (that would take weeks), but you will understand its soul, feel its magic, and discover why it is one of the most vibrant cities in the world.
Day 1: Sultanahmet - the center of history (European side)
All the main attractions are concentrated in the Sultanahmet district, literally a 5-minute walk from each other!
9. 00-10:00 — Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmet Mosque)
The main symbol of Istanbul. Six minarets (a rarity for mosques!), blue tiles inside, chandeliers, and Islamic geometry.
Entry permitted (respect the culture):
· Head covering for women (headscarves are provided upon entry)
· Remove shoes (leave them in a locker)
· Do not take photographs during prayer
· Dress modestly
Best time: early morning (9:00-11:00), when the light streams through the windows and creates a blue ambiance.
Duration: 30 minutes.
10. 30-12:00 — Hagia Sophia (Aya Sofya)
One of the most majestic buildings in the world. Built in 537 as a Christian cathedral, then a mosque, then a museum, and now a mosque again.
The main wonder: the enormous dome (31 meters in diameter) without internal supports! It seems to float in the air. When you enter, you're speechless.
Mosaics, columns of multicolored marble, enormous chandeliers (the chandeliers weigh 1 ton!), Islamic calligraphic discs.
Time: 1 hour.
Tip: Arrive early to see fewer tourists.
12:00-1:30 PM — Topkapi Palace (Sultan's Palace)
A vast palace-city where the sultans lived for 400 years. Hundreds of rooms, gardens, and pavilions.
Highlights:
· Harem (the quarters of the Sultan's wives and concubines) – intimate and beautiful
· Treasury (jewels, gold, weapons)
· Kitchen (you can see how they cook)
· Janissary Barracks
· Garden with a view of the Bosphorus and the Princes' Islands
Time: 2-3 hours (but you'll see the highlights in 1.5 hours).
Tip: There may be lines. Book online or arrive early.
1. 30 PM-2:30 PM — Lunch
Where in the Sultanahmet district:
· "Sebah Lokantasi" — fish, meze, home-cooked food, 150-200 TL
· "Imbat" — Turkish dishes, cozy, 120-180 TL
· Street food: kebab, pimidi, borek, pomegranate juice — from 30 TL
Tip: Try meze (appetizers), kebab, Turkish tea, and baklava for dessert.
2. 30 PM-4:00 PM — Grand Bazaar
One of the largest covered bazaars in the world. 4,000 stalls, a maze of alleys, shopping, noise, the smell of spices, and Turkish hospitality.
What to buy:
· Turkish carpets
· Ceramics and ceramic tiles
· Spices (saffron, cumin, sumac)
· Turkish coffee and tea
· Leather goods
· Jewelry
Tip: Bargain! The first price is never the final one. Bargaining is theater, and the locals love it.
Time: 1-2 hours.
Entrances are everywhere, exits are everywhere. Don't get lost!
4. 00-5:30 PM — Galata Tower and the Beyoğlu district
The 67-meter-tall Medieval Tower (1348) overlooks all of Istanbul and the Bosphorus.
From above: views of the Golden Horn, the Bosphorus, the Asian side, mosques, and the sea.
Entrance: 500-600 lira (~17 euros).
Time: 1 hour (including the ascent and views).
Then head down to the Beyoğlu district, a youthful area with cafes, bars, street art, and nightlife.
5. 30 PM - 7:00 PM - Walk along the Golden Horn
The Golden Horn is a bay that divides the European side of the city. Beautiful at sunset!
Walk along the promenade (from Galata to Fayre) - views, cafes, snacks, people.
Tip: Sit in a cafe, order Turkish tea (not free, but 10-20 lira), and gaze at the Bosphorus.
6. 30 PM - 9:00 PM - Dinner and Nightlife
Where to eat in the evening:
· Seaside fish restaurants (400-600 TL)
· Mezehane (snacks + alcohol) in Beyoğlu
· Street food: fried cheese in dough, corn, mussels
Nightlife: Beyoğlu has bars, clubs, and live music. After 11:00 PM, this is the most lively place in the city.
Day 2: Asian Side and Islands
9. 00 AM - 10:30 AM - Crossing to Asia (by ferry!)
The ferry from the European to the Asian side is a MUST-DO! 20-30 minutes on the water, views of the Bosphorus, mosques, palaces, and the sea.
Ticket: 20-25 TL (~€0.70). The cheapest excursion!
Route: Galata or Eminonu → Kadıköy or Üsküdar.
10. 30-12:00 — Kadıköy (Asian side)
A youthful district with cafes, bookstores, art galleries, and street art.
Walk, people-watch, and sit in cafes. It's quieter and more authentic than the tourist center.
Where to get coffee: Local coffee shops, cheaper than in the center. Turkish coffee: 30-40 lira.
Time: 1.5 hours.
12:00-1:30 PM — Lunch
Kadikoy is cheaper than the city center:
· Fish restaurants: 200-300 lira
· Kebab: 50-80 lira
· Manti (Turkish ravioli): 60-100 lira
Tip: Kadikoy Bazaar has plenty of local food.
1:30-3:30 PM — Princess Islands
Discover tranquil islands with houses, horses instead of cars, sea, and greenery.
Ferry from Kadikoy to Büyükada Island — the largest and most beautiful.
There:
· Stroll around the island (no cars!)
· Swimming in the sea (summer)
· Fish lunch on the shore
· View of Istanbul
Ferry ticket: 15-30 lira roundtrip.
Time on the island: minimum 2 hours.
Tip: During the summer (May-September), the islands are crowded. Visit early on weekdays.
3:30 PM-5:00 PM — Return to the city
Ferry back to Kadikoy/Istanbul.
5. 00 PM-6:30 PM — Suleymaniye Mosque
One of the largest and most beautiful mosques in Istanbul. Built in 1557, it can accommodate 10,000 people.
Highlights: its grandeur, tranquility, view of the Golden Horn from the courtyard, and the studio atmosphere (there's a madrasah, library, and hospital here).
Duration: 1 hour.
Tip: Go before sunset, when the light is beautiful.
6. 30 PM-8:00 PM — Sunset and Bosphorus Views
Best Sunset Spots:
· Galata Tower
