Inn District travel guide and discussion

#easytravelpost Alpe Veglia is a glacial basin in the Biellese Alps, reached from Piedicavallo (1,037 m) via the E50 mule track—2.5 hrs, 850 m gain, no tech scramble. Rifugio Lago della Vecchia (1,872 m, 22 beds, half-board ~50 EUR, June–Sept, book by phone 2–3 weeks ahead for August) sits on the shore. I drove Turin→Piedicavallo (1.5 hrs), started 08:00, hiked in with a daypack + overnight kit. The mossy cliff is the north shore where the larch-and-fir wall seeps and the moss carpet runs to the waterline; the lake is small, cobalt, ringed by grass-and-rock. I slept at the rifugio, woke 06:30, and had the shore to myself with the Rosa crest lit pink. The Veglia plateau (30 min above the lake) is summer pasture with a 2,300 m rim walk. Mistake: I wore trail runners in June and the E50 mule track had snow patches at 1,600 m—boots, even early season. Another: I assumed card payment at the rifugio and they took cash only; carry EUR. Would you hike in to Lago della Vecchia for one rifugio night and the dawn shore, or day-hike from Piedicavallo and add the Alpe Veglia plateau loop on the return?

While the snowy mountains of Innsbruck still wear their winter silver robes, the spring has quietly crept up along both banks of the Inn River. Winter and spring converge here—the Alpine snow has yet to disappear, while the city terraces are already bathed in sunlight. From speeding down snowy slopes to running among blooming flowers, springtime Innsbruck presents a unique landscape of seasonal transition. Trail Running: The exhilarating experience of spring in the mountains As the days grow longer, it’s the perfect season for trail running enthusiasts. The mountains and plateaus surrounding Innsbruck offer diverse terrains: fields bursting with flowers, forest trails, and paths alongside babbling streams, with a variety of routes. Beginners can choose the low-lying trails along the Inn and Sill Rivers, passing small parks with plenty of sunshine; experienced runners can challenge the Höttinger-Höfe route, which passes ancient farms, winds through forests, and leads up to a hillside at 735 meters elevation. City Strolls: Spring sunshine in the Old Town Spring breathes new life into Innsbruck’s Old Town. Cafés and restaurant terraces on Maria-Theresien-Strasse reopen, with shop windows filled with spring fashion collections. The city’s Market Square is a great place to relax and enjoy the spring scenery along the Inn River and the row of colorful houses by the riverbank—this spot was even used by Jay Chou for his wedding photo shoot, with the majestic Nordkette mountain range as the backdrop. Golf: Swinging amidst picturesque scenery The Mieming Plateau Golf Park opens its new season from mid-March. Featuring 27 holes, it has been rated Austria’s “Leading Golf Course” since 2025. The course is set against the Mieming mountain range, with lush green fairways contrasting sharply with snow-capped peaks. Various accommodation options are available nearby, including spa hotels, guesthouses, and holiday homes. Cycling: Crossing three countries along the Inn River A popular spring cycling route is the Inn River bike path, which passes through Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, winding along the Inn River. The section westward from Innsbruck to Silz is worth trying, with 24 stops along the way to purchase local specialties such as honey, spirits, sausages, and homemade bread. Additionally, the bike loop around Natters is family-friendly, passing through green forests, flower meadows, and Tyrolean villages. Spring Skiing: Extending winter on the glaciers There are still several places in the Innsbruck region for spring skiing. The ski lift valley station at Kühtai sits at 2,020 meters elevation, with quality slopes maintained until the end of April, offering ski-in/ski-out convenience. The Stubai Glacier is about a 50-minute public transport ride from Innsbruck city center, with the ski season lasting until May. Sunny downhill runs and mountain restaurant terraces make spring skiing especially attractive. When edelweiss and cherry blossoms quietly meet in the valleys, spring in Innsbruck reveals a dual character: half speeding down snowy slopes, half strolling among blooming flowers. From glaciers to terraces, from morning sunshine to evening swings, this Alpine city tells us through the changing seasons that some beauties belong only to the fleeting moment where winter and spring blend.
