But my favorite part is definitely the Albanian Riviera. The water around Ksamil is ridiculously clear, and in some places it almost feels like you’re somewhere in Greece just without the same prices. Food, accommodation, and transportation are generally quite affordable, so it’s an easy place to enjoy without spending too much. 2. North Macedonia North Macedonia feels a little underrated, which is probably part of the reason I liked it. Lake Ohrid was easily the highlight for me. The combination of the lake, mountains, old churches, and quiet streets makes it the kind of place where you naturally slow down. Sitting by the water in the evening with nowhere I needed to rush to was probably one of my favorite moments there. It’s also noticeably cheaper than many of the more popular destinations in Europe, especially when it comes to local food and accommodation. 3. Bosnia and Herzegovina Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of those countries that has a completely different atmosphere from the typical European destinations. Sarajevo has such an interesting mix of cultures and history, and walking around the old town almost feels like being somewhere between Europe and the Middle East. Then there’s Mostar, with its famous Old Bridge and beautiful old streets along the river. What I loved most was how much you could experience without needing a huge budget. The food is good, portions are generous, and everyday travel costs can still be surprisingly reasonable. Final Thoughts Albania, North Macedonia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina might not be the first countries people think about when planning a European trip, but that’s exactly what makes them interesting. They’re affordable, beautiful, and still have that feeling of discovering somewhere a little less obvious. Built in the 16th century under the Ottoman Empire, the bridge was designed by architect Mimar Hayruddin as a bold expression of engineering and aesthetics: a single stone arch, precise in curvature, elegant in proportion, and strong enough to unify two steeply rising riverbanks. It is not a traditional tourist destination, but it is the capital of the Republika Srpska and the second-largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina. There are no dense clusters of attractions or trendy spots to check in at, which instead allows for a different kind of travel experience—no rushing, just feeling. The Holy Trinity Church in the city center is unforgettable, blending Serbian and Byzantine styles, with a sacred yet exotic aesthetic edge. We sat on a bench outside the church for a long time, doing nothing, letting time flow away in the foreign breeze. That kind of idleness turned out to be a small but genuine happiness. The pedestrian street is short, the shops are low-key, selling only local goods, with a simple, everyday vibe. The Kastel Fortress stands quietly on one side of the city; walking along the stone path on the city walls, you can almost hear the echoes of history. Next to the restaurant inside the fortress, the Vrbas River flows quietly, like a forgotten poem.
