This small town, about an hour from flagstaff has an ostrich ranch you can stay in. #happynewyear We were on a out west trip and in a town named Dolan Springs, there is a ranch with ostriches. A 2 bed 2 bath rental, enjoy the west’s beauty and nature. We saw a Jack rabbit, and, of course ostrich. Their so weird looking! We stayed at the Koa flagstaff campground This koa campground is a high-altitude mountain getaway nestled at 7,000 feet among tall ponderosa pines at the base of the San Francisco Peaks. We Enjoyed cool/rainy temperatures and the wonderful scent of pine forests. Great Basecamp: Located right off U.S. Highway 89, it sits close to local restaurants and shops while acting as a convenient jumping-off point. It is roughly 1.5 hours from the Grand Canyon and about 1 hour from Sedona. Direct Nature Access: Hiking trails link right from the campground into the neighboring national forest. Offers friendly RV sites with 50-amp service and patios, deluxe cabins with bathrooms, rustic camping cabins, tent pads, and even authentic teepees. Family Fun: Features a bouncing jumping pillow, a nature-inspired playground, bike rentals. They also do activities for the kids. Includes strong Wi-Fi, clean restrooms and showers, a well-stocked camp store/gift shop, laundry facilities. Pet Friendly: Features a large, fenced dog park. We had a blast here can’t wait to go try another koa campground. Delicious and unique cocktails. We met a very kind waiter from Rimini who gave us excellent recommendations with patience and precision. Although we were a group of six and there wasn’t a table available when we arrived, he seated us near the bar and later found us a better spot as soon as possible. Truly impressive service! #itinerarycheck This is the most logistically annoying beautiful hike in the US and the permit system is the whole battle. I secured permits 6 months out exactly when the window opened (February 1 for May dates), paid the tribe’s fee of $455 per person for 3 nights (rate changes yearly, card only, no refunds), and still had to reconfirm by email twice. No day hikes allowed—minimum 3 nights, 4 days, and they check wristbands at the campground. Drive to Hualapai Hilltop from Flagstaff is 3.5 hours, last 30 minutes on dirt that turns to soup if it rains; I arrived night before and slept in the car at the hilltop lot because the 6 am start matters. Hilltop to Supai village is 10 miles on a wide dusty road, 3–4 hours with a 300 m descent into the canyon. Supai has a café (card sometimes, cash better), a general store with limited stock and inflated prices, and a mule operation that will haul your pack for a few hundred dollars if you booked ahead. From Supai it is 2 miles to Havasu Falls, another 0.5 to Mooney Falls. The turquoise at Mooney is the showstopper: 58 m drop into a travertine grotto, and the descent is a chained vertical scramble through a tunnel and down metal ladders bolted into the rock. I am not afraid of heights and it still took me 20 minutes to talk myself down the first time—gloves with grip are essential, and if it is wet, turn back. People die here most years from slipping on the ladder section. Camp is at the base of Mooney or further on at Beaver Falls; I stayed at Mooney flats, which meant I could photograph the cascade at every light. Water from the creek is not safe untreated—filter or tablets. No fires, no drones, no alcohol (tribe enforces), and pack out everything. Helicopter out costs extra and only runs certain days, so do not bank on it as a backup unless you booked it. Biggest itinerary mistake: cutting it to exactly 3 nights with a same-day drive home. The climb out from Mooney to Hilltop is 13 miles uphill in sand and heat and took me 6 hours 40; after that you still have 3.5 hours to Flagstaff. Build a zero day or at least a motel night in Peach Springs after. Would you do the 4-night version to add Beaver Falls and a rest day, or is 3 nights enough if you are fit? For me 3 was tight but doable; 4 would have been kinder.

"These aren't just erosion patterns; these are Grallator dinosaur tracks from the Early Jurassic, roughly 200 million years ago." The greatest joy of driving in the American West is this ultimate sense of isolation, leaving the world entirely in your rearview mirror. The Passenger-Seat Road Movie: Looking out through the windshield, the horizon stretches infinitely (Pic 4). No traffic lights, no city hustle and bustle—only the mysterious unknown waiting ahead for us to explore. ⛰️ Bitter Springs Overlook | A Breathtaking Glimpse by the Highway Standing Quietly by the Cliff's Edge: Following the signs into the Bitter Springs Overlook, the dry, hot desert wind instantly wraps around you the moment you step out of the car (Pic 6). Steel guardrails on one side and a sheer drop into a massive rocky canyon on the other—the view is so expansively wide it almost gives you vertigo. Cracks of the Earth and Thousand-Layered Monoliths: Gazing out from the edge, the giant red rocks opposite look as if they were cleaved by God's mighty axe. The deep horizontal striations on the rock formations are the growth rings left by hundreds of millions of years of wind, sand, and tectonic shifts (Pic 7). The highway snakes along the valley floor like a fine thread. In the face of this magnificent nature, a person feels as tiny as a grain of sand. Geological Miracles on the Distant Horizon: Looking as far as the eye can see, the rolling mesas and canyons shift through rich layers of orange-red and taupe under the intense Arizona sun (Pic 9). A brief pit stop, yet the soul is fiercely shaken by this desolate yet magnificent scenery. This road, as you keep driving, Will make you understand why so many people fall hopelessly in love with the American West. It doesn't offer gentle comfort, But uses its ultimate vastness to cure all your petty worries. Bitter Springs isn't bitter at all, but rather as sweet as a road trip dream you never want to wake up from. 🚗🏜️✨ 📍 Location: Bitter Springs Overlook, Arizona

The regrets from our ascent were doubly made up for by nature on the way down. As time passed, the afternoon sun was no longer beating down directly from above. The sunlight began to slant at just the right angle, like a stage spotlight suddenly finding its mark—in this soft, angled light, the vast grove of golden aspens lost its overexposed midday glare, perfectly revealing incredibly rich, saturated, and deeply textured layers. In that very moment, they were the absolute main characters of the mountain and our journey! 🪨 Heading Back: The Careful Descent Focusing on every single step: The descent was just as challenging as the climb. The loose volcanic rocks and tangled tree roots (Pic 2) demanded even more intense concentration on the way back. Leaning on trekking poles, my friends and I carefully navigated our way down the rugged, muddy, and rocky trail (Pic 3). Though physically exhausted, our steps felt so much lighter knowing we were about to reunite with that golden secret haven ahead. 💛 Unparalleled Beauty: A Golden Opera House in Soft Light (Pics 1, 4-8): As we re-entered the heart of the aspen grove, everyone instinctively slowed down. The light was as gentle as a ripple of water, slicing diagonally through the dense canopy. Gone was the harsh glare of noon. Instead, every heart-shaped yellow leaf was rendered beautifully translucent by the sun, radiating pure, rich tones resembling amber or ripe wheat. The faintly glowing white trunks crisscrossed within the golden halo. As a gentle breeze swept through, a soft rustling echoed across the mountainside, like countless golden wind chimes swaying in unison. We practically floated through this stretch, immersed in an unparalleled visual feast. 🌲 The Ultimate Dance of Setting Sun and Aspens A Meadow Farewell at the Foot of the Mountain: Finally! After passing through the last cluster of towering pines and aspens (Pic 9), the view suddenly opened up, and we safely arrived back at the expansive ski resort meadow where we started. Looking back, the setting sun had painted all of Humphreys Peak in a soft, warm hue, while the trailhead at the base remained peacefully quiet. A Fulfilling Finish Line Reflection: Standing on the vast, faintly yellowing meadow of early autumn and gazing at the rolling peaks in the distance (Pic 10), we felt completely fulfilled. Even though we didn't summit today, we walked on a blanket of fallen leaves and witnessed the absolute perfect autumn light. This weekend, wrapped entirely in golden aspens, was a total success! Some journeys don't necessarily end at the summit. With just one mile left to the top of Humphreys Peak, Arizona’s highest point, we chose to listen to our bodies and bow out gracefully, leaving our best silhouettes behind on this sacred mountain. 🪨 The Scree Slope Test: Surviving the Toughest Stretch (The challenge after 2.4 miles) Tackling the rugged terrain: Leaving the golden woods behind, the trail sneaks up on you and reveals its unforgiving nature (Pic 2). Massive volcanic scree fields start appearing underfoot. Every single step demands intense focus and quickly drains your leg strength and stamina (Pic 3). A brief breather in the dappled forest light: Pausing for a moment to catch our breath, we looked up at the pure blue sky framed by towering conifers (Pic 4) as sunlight filtered through the canopy. Snapping a shot of that pristine sky was the sweetest comfort on that rocky grind. 🌲 Sweeping Views at Last! Rolling Mountains Below Breaking through the tree line into deadwood and blazing sun: As the elevation climbs, the forest begins to thin out. When the proud conifers give way to stubborn deadwood, the blazing sun beats down without mercy (Pic 5), and the distant ridges with their purplish-red glow finally reveal themselves. Taking in the expansive horizon: When we finally broke free from the canopy, the view completely opened up (Pic 6)! The lush green forest nearby blended with the rolling, low volcanic cones on the distant horizon. The sheer vastness of the landscape made us stop in our tracks just to soak it all in. 📍 Reaching Agassiz Saddle! The Final Mile Dilemma and the Descent The sacred crossroads at the saddle: After a tough grind, we finally made it to the high-altitude Agassiz Saddle! The wooden Weatherford Trail sign stood resilient in the wind (Pic 7), a gentle reminder of the fragile and sacred ecosystem here. Stopping at a breathtaking 11,460 feet: Standing on the saddle, the massive curving rim of the volcano stretched right before us (Pic 8). It was entirely barren, covered in rugged scree—a stunningly desolate and awe-inspiring sight. At this point, we were actually just 1 mile shy of Humphreys Peak's true summit (Pic 9). Exhausted but making the smart call to head down: Even though the summit was so close you could taste it, our group was completely wiped out. After resting for a bit in the fierce wind and baking sun at the saddle, and snapping some cool group shots to mark the moment (Pics 1 & 10), we made the call to head back down the way we came! The true meaning of hiking is never just about conquering those last few hundred feet of elevation. It’s about sharing the trail with like-minded friends and making sure everyone gets there and back safely. We'll save that missing 1 mile for next time, but the towering peaks and endless vistas we witnessed today were more than enough to make this fall unforgettable. With mild weather and gentle breezes, it’s the perfect time to surrender your soul to the mountains. 🥾 Clear skies ahead—let's conquer the highest peak! Starting point beneath a vivid blue dome: Standing before the wooden signpost, "Humphreys Trail" clearly points the way on this pilgrimage (Pic 2). Looking up, the sky is impeccably pure, boasting an almost luxurious shade of azure that instantly lifts your spirits. Trekking through the winter ski resort meadows: As you slowly ascend the trail, the expansive, sun-bleached meadows beside you are actually bustling ski slopes in the winter (Pic 3). The steel cables of the aerial tramway stretch out against the stark blue sky, while the distant peaks are already brushed with patches of dazzling, fragmented gold. ☀️ Gazing up at the canopy, catching the intense sunlight through the Aspens Towering Aspens bathed in backlighting: Stepping into the towering Aspen forest, the straight, white trunks reach straight for the clouds (Pic 4). Though the golden foliage at the top might seem a bit overexposed and hard to stare at under the glaring sun, the sight of that wild, dazzling light filtering through the canopy is breathtakingly beautiful. A sacred forest sprinkled with sunbursts: Angle your camera towards the sky, and you'll capture the sunlight bursting through the dense woods in sharp, radiant star-like flares (Pic 5). Blue skies, golden leaves, stark white trunks, and vibrant green pine needles weave together, showcasing nature's unfiltered and abundant vitality. 💛 Absolutely stunning! A dreamy trail blanketed in golden leaves Signing in at the wilderness sanctuary: Upon reaching the Kachina Peaks Wilderness sign and register box (Pic 1), you'll notice the ground has quietly been covered entirely by scattered golden, coin-like leaves. Every step you take is accompanied by the signature, satisfying crunch of autumn. A dappled golden carpet: The further you venture, the thicker the "golden carpet" flanking the trail becomes. Sunlight pierces through the trees, casting dappled shadows over the sea of yellow leaves and tangled roots (Pic 6). It’s so surreal you half expect to stumble upon forest elves. A symphony of rugged terrain and fallen leaves: The path grows more rugged, winding through fallen logs, exposed rocks, and gnarled roots (Pics 7-9). Yet, no matter how wild the trail gets, the sweeping, careless blanket of golden leaves is your constant companion (Pic 10). While the hike demands some stamina, being wrapped in this ultimate autumn splendor feels incredibly healing every single second. Autumn at Humphreys Peak, offers the pure, unpolluted blue skies you won't find in the city, and a whole mountain generously drenched in brilliant gold. Leaving the endless desolate landscapes behind as the elevation climbed, we arrived in Flagstaff, a charming mountain town known as a "desert oasis". The cactus-filled desert heat is nowhere to be found here—only crisp highland autumn vibes and a retro historic district. What's even more exciting is that the autumn we'd been desperately waiting for in the big cities finally greeted us here with breathtakingly beautiful golden Aspen trees! 🍜 A Taste of Thai Comfort | Sawadee Thai Delicious bites beneath vintage red bricks: Strolling through the historic district, we were instantly drawn to Sawadee Thai's vintage stone-brick facade and exquisite gold-painted signage (Figure 2). After a long road trip across the American West, this was exactly the kind of comfort food our stomachs were craving. A cozy and mystical Thai vibe: Pushing the door open, the warm, dim lighting, intricate tin ceiling, and iconic Ganesha decor (Figure 3) instantly melted away our driving fatigue. I have to say, the Thai food here is absolutely incredible—you can order blindly and still not go wrong! ⛪ The Beauty of Faith Under a Blue Sky | Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary Chapel A symphony of blue skies and stone masonry: Built from rugged volcanic rock with pink Gothic architectural frames, this historic chapel looks incredibly divine against the purest blue sky (Figure 4). The creeping ivy along the walls is quietly turning red, heralding the arrival of autumn. The light and shadow magic of stained glass: Stepping inside the chapel, sunlight streams through a row of massive stained glass windows beneath the magnificent wooden vaulted ceiling (Figure 5). It casts sacred, dappled shadows across the pews, instantly bringing a sense of deep inner peace. 🎨 Strolling Through the Historic District | Capturing Traces of History and Art A bird rhapsody on the theater wall: Passing by the famous Orpheum Theatre, we saw its entire exterior wall covered in a breathtakingly massive mural (Figure 6)! Countless colorful flying birds, a piano, and dreamy light patterns intertwine to create the most eye-catching street art in town. Time frozen in front of the carpenter's shop: Near the church, we found a statue pavilion labeled Joseph Carpenter Shop (Figure 7). The bronze statue vividly recreates a woodworking scene from the past, silently sharing the historical tales of this town. The solemn declaration of the red brick clock tower: The majestic red-brick Coconino County Superior Court building stands tall on the lawn (Figure 8). Its classical clock tower points straight to the blue sky, framed by trees just beginning to turn yellow, exuding a strong, classic American small-town vibe. 💛 A Highland Surprise! Finally Catching the City's Golden Glow An autumn sonata in front of the historic hotel: Walking down the street, you can spot the iconic Hotel Monte Vista sign from afar (Figure 1). But the most breathtaking sight is the cluster of Aspen trees in front of the hotel, completely dyed in dazzling gold, making the entire street feel incredibly romantic. A golden halo in the sunlight: From another angle, the bright yellow leaves sparkle against the blue sky and retro streetscape (Figure 9). After all, wasn't this long drive precisely to encounter this ultimate touch of autumn on the plateau? Autumn hidden in a street corner oil painting: Vintage red-brick buildings, a beautifully scattered streetscape, and a fully blooming golden tree (Figure 10)—the autumn here isn't overly flashy, but it's as gorgeous as a carefully framed oil painting. Driving along Oak Creek Canyon Road, the vast forest along the route was still a somewhat youthful emerald green, taking its sweet time waiting for autumn's touch. We initially thought we were a bit early for the foliage, but the moment we parked at the Oak Creek Vista overlook and walked down, Mother Nature delivered an unexpected surprise! 🗺️ As Far as the Eye Can See! A God's-Eye View from Oak Creek Vista Overlooking an ocean of green: The moment you stand on the observation deck, the expansive canyon landscape instantly unfolds before your eyes (Pic 1). Rolling mountains are blanketed by dense coniferous forests, and the highway winds through the endless greenery like a slender ribbon. A prelude to autumn on the cliffs: If you look closely at the opposite cliffs, while they are mostly lush and green, tiny spots of yellow and reddish-brown are quietly peeking out at the top (Pic 2)—the most captivating "teaser trailer" of autumn. The ultimate road trip ritual with the bros: With such a majestic backdrop, it’s only fitting for the crew to sit side-by-side on the stone wall for a group shot (Pic 3)! Our flight from Boston to Phoenix was at 8 AM the day before Thanksgiving, a 6-hour flight 🌵. Since we were planning to relax at the resort for the first two days (hotel recommendations in the previous post), we didn't rent a car and took a taxi directly from the airport. ⛱️Day 1-2 - Relaxing at the Resort: When we arrived, the temperature reached a high of around 20 degrees Celsius, but it was fine for swimming. Sunscreen and moisturizer are still essential! The restaurant I least recommend at JW Desert Ridge Resort is the Asian Fusion; the others were fine… 🌄Day 3 Afternoon - Via Sedona to the Grand Canyon: We rented a car near the hotel and drove to Flagstaff for our Grand Canyon trip the next day… Sedona was a truly stunning town! Searching for "Red Rock Loop Rd" is a very efficient way to see the beautiful scenery. I recommend arriving around 4 PM, as the view is most beautiful near sunset! After the loop, there's the world's only blue McDonald's nearby; we had dinner there and then checked into Springhill Flagstaff. ⛰️Day 4 - Efficient Grand Canyon Tour with Kids: Breakfast was included at the hotel, and we set off for the Grand Canyon at 8 am… I highly recommend entering through the Grand Canyon East Entrance; we arrived at 9:30 am and there was no queue at all! The Desert View Tower is not far from the entrance. I strongly recommend getting your free tower tickets inside the tower first, then coming out to take photos. Afterwards, you can choose one or two stops on the Desert View Drive. We chose Duck on a Rock because it was more fun for the kids, and we could easily take photos and leave by pulling over… Afterwards, we drove to the visitor center to park and rest, and walked to see Mather Point. By then it was already past 11 am. We originally planned to drive to the shuttle red line station to visit, but we couldn't find a parking space… Next time, we should park at the visitor center and transfer directly from the blue line to the red line, but my kids were tired of the scenery, so we just left early to go to Vegas… Around 12 pm, we left the Grand Canyon through the South Entrance; the line to enter was incredibly long. 🎲Day 5 - Vegas Day Trip: This wasn't our first time here, so we only visited a few of the places we most wanted to see. Staying at the Vdara was absolutely amazing! The Sphere and the Broadway fountains were both visible from our beds! My kid was thrilled just looking at the Sphere emojis… The hotel's location was also great, convenient for taking the tram or walking to other hotels… I highly recommend booking a few days in advance at Aria Din Tai Fung; even my kid, who usually doesn't eat much, devoured it! The Cosmopolitan's Secret Pizza was also good! We only saw one show this time, but Awakening is highly recommended!
