This small town, about an hour from flagstaff has an ostrich ranch you can stay in. #happynewyear We were on a out west trip and in a town named Dolan Springs, there is a ranch with ostriches. A 2 bed 2 bath rental, enjoy the west’s beauty and nature. We saw a Jack rabbit, and, of course ostrich. Their so weird looking! The regrets from our ascent were doubly made up for by nature on the way down. As time passed, the afternoon sun was no longer beating down directly from above. The sunlight began to slant at just the right angle, like a stage spotlight suddenly finding its mark—in this soft, angled light, the vast grove of golden aspens lost its overexposed midday glare, perfectly revealing incredibly rich, saturated, and deeply textured layers. In that very moment, they were the absolute main characters of the mountain and our journey! 🪨 Heading Back: The Careful Descent Focusing on every single step: The descent was just as challenging as the climb. The loose volcanic rocks and tangled tree roots (Pic 2) demanded even more intense concentration on the way back. Leaning on trekking poles, my friends and I carefully navigated our way down the rugged, muddy, and rocky trail (Pic 3). Though physically exhausted, our steps felt so much lighter knowing we were about to reunite with that golden secret haven ahead. 💛 Unparalleled Beauty: A Golden Opera House in Soft Light (Pics 1, 4-8): As we re-entered the heart of the aspen grove, everyone instinctively slowed down. The light was as gentle as a ripple of water, slicing diagonally through the dense canopy. Gone was the harsh glare of noon. Looking back, the setting sun had painted all of Humphreys Peak in a soft, warm hue, while the trailhead at the base remained peacefully quiet. A Fulfilling Finish Line Reflection: Standing on the vast, faintly yellowing meadow of early autumn and gazing at the rolling peaks in the distance (Pic 10), we felt completely fulfilled. Even though we didn't summit today, we walked on a blanket of fallen leaves and witnessed the absolute perfect autumn light. This weekend, wrapped entirely in golden aspens, was a total success! With just one mile left to the top of Humphreys Peak, Arizona’s highest point, we chose to listen to our bodies and bow out gracefully, leaving our best silhouettes behind on this sacred mountain. 🪨 The Scree Slope Test: Surviving the Toughest Stretch (The challenge after 2.4 miles) Tackling the rugged terrain: Leaving the golden woods behind, the trail sneaks up on you and reveals its unforgiving nature (Pic 2). Massive volcanic scree fields start appearing underfoot. Every single step demands intense focus and quickly drains your leg strength and stamina (Pic 3). A brief breather in the dappled forest light: Pausing for a moment to catch our breath, we looked up at the pure blue sky framed by towering conifers (Pic 4) as sunlight filtered through the canopy. Snapping a shot of that pristine sky was the sweetest comfort on that rocky grind. 🌲 Sweeping Views at Last! Rolling Mountains Below Breaking through the tree line into deadwood and blazing sun: As the elevation climbs, the forest begins to thin out. When the proud conifers give way to stubborn deadwood, the blazing sun beats down without mercy (Pic 5), and the distant ridges with their purplish-red glow finally reveal themselves. Taking in the expansive horizon: When we finally broke free from the canopy, the view completely opened up (Pic 6)! The lush green forest nearby blended with the rolling, low volcanic cones on the distant horizon. The sheer vastness of the landscape made us stop in our tracks just to soak it all in. 📍 Reaching Agassiz Saddle! The Final Mile Dilemma and the Descent The sacred crossroads at the saddle: After a tough grind, we finally made it to the high-altitude Agassiz Saddle! The wooden Weatherford Trail sign stood resilient in the wind (Pic 7), a gentle reminder of the fragile and sacred ecosystem here. Stopping at a breathtaking 11,460 feet: Standing on the saddle, the massive curving rim of the volcano stretched right before us (Pic 8). It was entirely barren, covered in rugged scree—a stunningly desolate and awe-inspiring sight. At this point, we were actually just 1 mile shy of Humphreys Peak's true summit (Pic 9). Exhausted but making the smart call to head down: Even though the summit was so close you could taste it, our group was completely wiped out. After resting for a bit in the fierce wind and baking sun at the saddle, and snapping some cool group shots to mark the moment (Pics 1 & 10), we made the call to head back down the way we came! The true meaning of hiking is never just about conquering those last few hundred feet of elevation. It’s about sharing the trail with like-minded friends and making sure everyone gets there and back safely. We'll save that missing 1 mile for next time, but the towering peaks and endless vistas we witnessed today were more than enough to make this fall unforgettable. Every step you take is accompanied by the signature, satisfying crunch of autumn. A dappled golden carpet: The further you venture, the thicker the "golden carpet" flanking the trail becomes. Sunlight pierces through the trees, casting dappled shadows over the sea of yellow leaves and tangled roots (Pic 6). It’s so surreal you half expect to stumble upon forest elves. Leaving the endless desolate landscapes behind as the elevation climbed, we arrived in Flagstaff, a charming mountain town known as a "desert oasis". The cactus-filled desert heat is nowhere to be found here—only crisp highland autumn vibes and a retro historic district. What's even more exciting is that the autumn we'd been desperately waiting for in the big cities finally greeted us here with breathtakingly beautiful golden Aspen trees! 🍜 A Taste of Thai Comfort | Sawadee Thai Delicious bites beneath vintage red bricks: Strolling through the historic district, we were instantly drawn to Sawadee Thai's vintage stone-brick facade and exquisite gold-painted signage (Figure 2). After a long road trip across the American West, this was exactly the kind of comfort food our stomachs were craving. A cozy and mystical Thai vibe: Pushing the door open, the warm, dim lighting, intricate tin ceiling, and iconic Ganesha decor (Figure 3) instantly melted away our driving fatigue. I have to say, the Thai food here is absolutely incredible—you can order blindly and still not go wrong! ⛪ The Beauty of Faith Under a Blue Sky | Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary Chapel A symphony of blue skies and stone masonry: Built from rugged volcanic rock with pink Gothic architectural frames, this historic chapel looks incredibly divine against the purest blue sky (Figure 4). The creeping ivy along the walls is quietly turning red, heralding the arrival of autumn. The light and shadow magic of stained glass: Stepping inside the chapel, sunlight streams through a row of massive stained glass windows beneath the magnificent wooden vaulted ceiling (Figure 5). It casts sacred, dappled shadows across the pews, instantly bringing a sense of deep inner peace. 🎨 Strolling Through the Historic District | Capturing Traces of History and Art A bird rhapsody on the theater wall: Passing by the famous Orpheum Theatre, we saw its entire exterior wall covered in a breathtakingly massive mural (Figure 6)! Countless colorful flying birds, a piano, and dreamy light patterns intertwine to create the most eye-catching street art in town. Time frozen in front of the carpenter's shop: Near the church, we found a statue pavilion labeled Joseph Carpenter Shop (Figure 7). The bronze statue vividly recreates a woodworking scene from the past, silently sharing the historical tales of this town. The solemn declaration of the red brick clock tower: The majestic red-brick Coconino County Superior Court building stands tall on the lawn (Figure 8). Its classical clock tower points straight to the blue sky, framed by trees just beginning to turn yellow, exuding a strong, classic American small-town vibe. 💛 A Highland Surprise! Finally Catching the City's Golden Glow An autumn sonata in front of the historic hotel: Walking down the street, you can spot the iconic Hotel Monte Vista sign from afar (Figure 1). But the most breathtaking sight is the cluster of Aspen trees in front of the hotel, completely dyed in dazzling gold, making the entire street feel incredibly romantic. A golden halo in the sunlight: From another angle, the bright yellow leaves sparkle against the blue sky and retro streetscape (Figure 9). After all, wasn't this long drive precisely to encounter this ultimate touch of autumn on the plateau? Autumn hidden in a street corner oil painting: Vintage red-brick buildings, a beautifully scattered streetscape, and a fully blooming golden tree (Figure 10)—the autumn here isn't overly flashy, but it's as gorgeous as a carefully framed oil painting. Driving along Oak Creek Canyon Road, the vast forest along the route was still a somewhat youthful emerald green, taking its sweet time waiting for autumn's touch. The kids eagerly joined ski school, learning new skills and celebrating every small success on the slopes. We enjoyed gentle runs together, laughing whenever someone took a soft tumble into the powder. The scenic gondola ride offered sweeping views that felt magical under the winter sun. Between skiing and snow play, we shared warm meals and cozy conversations. It was the perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and precious family bonding time.

#skitrip Our family vacation to Arizona Snowbowl was a snowy adventure filled with laughter and mountain views. Nestled high above Flagstaff, the resort welcomed us with crisp air and bright blue skies. The kids were thrilled to take beginner ski lessons while we enjoyed gentle runs and scenic chairlift rides. Between snowball fights and hot chocolate breaks, every moment felt magical. The gondola ride offered breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks, making it a highlight for photos. Evenings were cozy and relaxing, sharing stories of the day’s fun. It was the perfect winter escape for our whole family.

Our flight from Boston to Phoenix was at 8 AM the day before Thanksgiving, a 6-hour flight 🌵. Since we were planning to relax at the resort for the first two days (hotel recommendations in the previous post), we didn't rent a car and took a taxi directly from the airport. ⛱️Day 1-2 - Relaxing at the Resort: When we arrived, the temperature reached a high of around 20 degrees Celsius, but it was fine for swimming. Sunscreen and moisturizer are still essential! The restaurant I least recommend at JW Desert Ridge Resort is the Asian Fusion; the others were fine… 🌄Day 3 Afternoon - Via Sedona to the Grand Canyon: We rented a car near the hotel and drove to Flagstaff for our Grand Canyon trip the next day… Sedona was a truly stunning town! Searching for "Red Rock Loop Rd" is a very efficient way to see the beautiful scenery. I recommend arriving around 4 PM, as the view is most beautiful near sunset! After the loop, there's the world's only blue McDonald's nearby; we had dinner there and then checked into Springhill Flagstaff. ⛰️Day 4 - Efficient Grand Canyon Tour with Kids: Breakfast was included at the hotel, and we set off for the Grand Canyon at 8 am… I highly recommend entering through the Grand Canyon East Entrance; we arrived at 9:30 am and there was no queue at all! The Desert View Tower is not far from the entrance. I strongly recommend getting your free tower tickets inside the tower first, then coming out to take photos. Afterwards, you can choose one or two stops on the Desert View Drive. We chose Duck on a Rock because it was more fun for the kids, and we could easily take photos and leave by pulling over… Afterwards, we drove to the visitor center to park and rest, and walked to see Mather Point. By then it was already past 11 am. We originally planned to drive to the shuttle red line station to visit, but we couldn't find a parking space… Next time, we should park at the visitor center and transfer directly from the blue line to the red line, but my kids were tired of the scenery, so we just left early to go to Vegas… Around 12 pm, we left the Grand Canyon through the South Entrance; the line to enter was incredibly long. 🎲Day 5 - Vegas Day Trip: This wasn't our first time here, so we only visited a few of the places we most wanted to see. Staying at the Vdara was absolutely amazing! The Sphere and the Broadway fountains were both visible from our beds! My kid was thrilled just looking at the Sphere emojis… The hotel's location was also great, convenient for taking the tram or walking to other hotels… I highly recommend booking a few days in advance at Aria Din Tai Fung; even my kid, who usually doesn't eat much, devoured it! The Cosmopolitan's Secret Pizza was also good! We only saw one show this time, but Awakening is highly recommended!

An unnamed cave that's absolutely stunning, no photos misleading at all! One of the must stop place along the Arizonan segment of route 66 is that of Flagstaff. Despite Arizona being known for its deserts and canyons this town located at 7000ft above sea level has more of an alpine feel to it with it’s towering pine forests and close proximity to the mountains including the Arizona snow dome. Visited The Grand Canyon. Something about nature and you physically being there. It changes something in you. ❤️ The views are simply awe-inspiring, especially during sunrise or sunset when the canyon glows with hues of orange, red, and gold. Hiking trails like the Bright Angel Trail offer intimate encounters with the canyon's rugged terrain, while helicopter tours provide a bird's-eye perspective of its immense expanse.

#2024 Travel Wishes The Grand Canyon of the United States is a super big place, it spans several continents, you go there and you don’t understand how the world can be so wonderful, with some so exaggeratedly beautiful and magnificent places, so I hope to continue to the United States this year and see more such grand and exaggerated views! A good little cafe down one of the side streets that lead to the front. You got plenty of tea and the warm fudge cake came with cream and was delicious. It cost just under rm10.00 for two teas and two cakes.what a lovely place to go for a meal or tea and coffee and puddings nice people that were in the cafe we were made to feel welcome great choice of cakes #deliciousfood
