A couple of kilometers from the village of Ölüdeniz lies a unique place: the ghost village of Kayakoy (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). It was once bustling with life, but today hundreds of stone houses, churches, and narrow streets create a unique open-air museum where you can touch history and feel the spirit of the past. This area was formerly inhabited by Greeks, and the village was called Livissi. They settled on the mountain slopes, engaged in crafts and trade, while nearby, in the Kaya Valley, Turks farmed. About 3,000 buildings were built in Livissi: churches, chapels, schools, a post office, a small printing press, workshops, and pharmacies. But in 1919, the Greco-Turkish War began, after which some Greeks perished, and the survivors were deported from the country. Turks began settling in this area. But they didn't know how to live on mountain slopes; they were accustomed to a completely different way of life: fertile land, spacious houses, not densely packed buildings. Eventually, they simply left, and the town has remained empty ever since. There are almost no intact houses in the town. Most lost their roofs, doors, and windows during the 1957 earthquake. But the walls, foundations, basements, and stoves remain. Thanks to them, one can imagine what the ghost town looked like when it was still alive. Interestingly, there was no master plan for the settlement. But all the buildings are arranged so as not to block sunlight from one another. Most houses in Kayakoy are two-story. The ground floors were used for storing household goods and keeping animals, while the upper floors housed the rooms. Walking among the abandoned stone buildings, you feel the echoes of their tragedy with your whole body. The silence on the deserted streets is peculiar, as if the houses are mourning their departed inhabitants. Despite the sunny weather and the vibrant colors of the greenery peeking through the rocky buildings, a sense of despondency and emptiness remains. How to get there? Kayaköy can be reached by car, motorbike, minibus (dolmuş), or on an organized tour. Regular buses depart from Fethiye and stop at the entrance to the village. The Experience & The Fear: Honestly, it was pretty scary at first. There is almost zero preliminary training. The instructor essentially just tells you, "Run and lift your legs!" Next thing you know, you are soaring high above the mountains. But once you are up there, it is pure magic. The views of the Blue Lagoon are absolutely breathtaking. The Adrenaline: Mid-flight, my instructor asked if I wanted to do some acrobatic tricks. I immediately said yes, and let me tell you, I was screaming like a kid! The adrenaline rush was insane. The Catch: The only thing that slightly ruined the impression happened after landing. We had already paid extra for the photo and video package. However, the team withheld the 360-degree camera footage, demanding an additional fee to release those specific shots. It felt like an unnecessary upsell. The Verdict: Is it worth $115? Absolutely. What I liked most about the northern side of Fethiye wasn’t one specific spot—it was the space. Around Çalış Beach, everything feels more stretched out. Less dramatic than Ölüdeniz—but easier, calmer, and more everyday. It’s less about highlights—and more about how easy it feels to just be there for a while.

I didn’t expect to see something this old right in the middle of the city. You’re walking through normal streets—and then suddenly, there they are carved into the rock above you. The Amyntas Rock Tombs don’t feel like a separate attraction. They feel like part of Fethiye itself. What makes them interesting isn’t just the history—it’s the setting: 🏛️ Massive tombs carved directly into the cliff 🏙️ Modern city life happening right below them 🌄 A short climb that gives you both history and a view 📸 That contrast of ancient + everyday life Climbing up is quick but a bit steep. Once you’re there, the perspective changes—you’re looking out over rooftops, the marina, and the mountains behind. A few things I noticed: ☀️ It gets very hot during the day—go early or later 👟 Steps are uneven but manageable 📸 The view is just as good as the tombs themselves It’s one of those places that doesn’t require much time—but leaves a strong impression.

But if you're short on time, here are the spots you absolutely shouldn't miss: 📍Lycian Rock Tombs and the Tomb of Amyntas - The ultimate symbol of the city. These aren't just piles of stones; they are massive facades carved directly into the cliffside overlooking the town. 📍The Promenade and Şehit Fethi Bey Park (Şehit Fethi Bey Parkı) - The massive modern park I mentioned earlier. It literally has it all: jogging and cycling paths, scooter rentals, a huge playground, a skatepark, sports courts, sun loungers, and plenty of benches to kick back on. 📍Old Town (Paspatur) - Traditional shopping streets covered by vibrant umbrellas. Tucked inside, you'll find tons of atmospheric Greek-style coffee shops, souvenir stands, and local boutiques selling clothes and sweets. 📍Fish Market - To be completely honest, I'm not the biggest fan of super authentic spots like this and usually prefer grabbing fish at a seaside cafe. But if you're hunting for the absolute freshest seafood, this is your spot. 📍Ölüdeniz and the Blue Lagoon - Hands down one of the most stunning beaches in Turkey. It's just a 15–20 minute drive from Fethiye. 📍Kayaköy Ghost Town - An abandoned Greek village about 15 minutes away from Fethiye. Picture hundreds of empty stone houses dotting a hillside. You can catch a minibus there from the white mosque. 📍Saklıkent Gorge - One of the deepest canyons in the entire world. 📍Göcek - The St. Tropez of Turkey. Göcek is only a 30-minute drive from Fethiye, but the vibe is worlds apart. It's a peaceful, incredibly well-maintained little town where the wealthy come to unwind and sail their yachts. 📍Kaş - Easily the most romantic town in Turkey and a huge favorite among Russian tech folks. If Fethiye is the soul of the region, Kaş is its beating heart. The drive takes around 1.5 to 2 hours.

They say there are 16 caves here—so there's definitely a reason to come back 😉 💡 Important things to know before your trip 👟 Footwear Rubber shoes are sold at the entrance, but they don't really prevent slipping.
