Sometimes the best travel experiences begin with an unexpected opportunity. While planning our trip through Portugal, we found a flight from Faro to Marrakech for just $25. We looked at each other and thought… “When will we get another chance to visit Africa?” So we booked it. A short flight later, we were landing on a completely new continent. It was our very first time in Africa, and we couldn’t have been more excited. We stayed at Oasis Medina Hostel, right inside the historic Medina, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions we made. Even before we arrived, the staff arranged an airport taxi for us, making our late-night arrival completely stress-free. Considering how easy it can be to get lost in Marrakech’s maze-like streets, especially at night, we were so grateful we didn’t have to worry about finding our way with our backpacks. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with genuine warmth, kindness, and of course mint tea. 🤩🫖 The team helped us with everything we needed throughout our stay and made us feel at home from the very first night. Although we had only just arrived, we could already sense that Morocco would be unlike anywhere we’d ever been. The sounds… The scents… The warm evening air… Everything felt completely different. Over the next few days, we discovered vibrant souks, incredible food, breathtaking architecture, beautiful gardens, and one of the richest cultures we’ve ever experienced. A Day in Faro Arriving in Faro just after 11 a.m., the first stop was the Municipal Market (Mercado Municipal) for a meal. At a local restaurant inside the market, I ordered the recommended fish dish of the day. Despite a communication mishap that resulted in red wine being served, the appetizers that came first were so delicious that they paired perfectly with the wine. The lively atmosphere of the market made it feel like the journey had truly begun. Without any specific plans, I wandered around aimlessly and stumbled upon a local café where I decided to have an espresso. To my surprise, it was only €0.90! Sitting there, listening to Portuguese news on the café's TV, I felt an inexplicable sense of comfort despite not understanding the language. This feeling is what makes traveling so special. Walking through the maze-like streets while watching trains run along the coast 🚃 was a delightful experience. Every corner I turned brought a new sense of excitement, making me want to explore everywhere, often getting lost in the process.
