Shenyang day trip guide | A complete itinerary for the Shenbei–Kangping–Faku rural wetland route This suburban road trip route connects rice paddies, lakes, wetlands, and rural scenery, allowing you to visit the golden rice paddies of Shenbei, the Liaohe River wetlands, and the migratory bird habitats of Faku in a single day. It is perfect for travelers who enjoy slow-paced rural travel, nature photography, and escaping the city bustle. As the itinerary covers a large area, driving is recommended. Plan your stops wisely and don't try to cram too much in. Depart from downtown Shenyang at 7:30 AM. Your first stop is the Shenbei Rice Dream Space. In autumn, thousands of acres of rice paddies blanket the land, featuring unique, colorful rice paddy art. You can ride the sightseeing train through the waves of rice or climb the observation deck for a bird's-eye view of the entire rural landscape, immersing yourself in the harvest atmosphere. Spend 1.5–2 hours here. Next, head to the Liaohe Seven-Star Lake Wetland. Stroll along the wooden boardwalks by the water, where reeds sway and egrets often skim the surface of the quiet, expansive lake. If you have extra time, you can stop by the Puhe Ecological Corridor for some relaxing camping on the lawn. Have lunch at a local farmhouse restaurant in Shenbei. In the afternoon, choose one of two options depending on your schedule: if you have plenty of time, head to Wolong Lake in Kangping for a walk around the lake and wait for water birds to fly over the surface. If you prefer birdwatching, head to the Faku Huanzidong National Wetland Park, a stopover for migrating Siberian cranes; stand on the birdwatching platform and quietly observe the wetland wildlife. You can also take a short detour to see the lotus pond and rural scenery of Shenglong Bay. Start your return trip at 4:30 PM and arrive back in the city by evening, concluding your one-day countryside excursion. Dining and ingredients (compliant ingredients, no wild flora or fauna) The ingredients at the farmhouse restaurants along the route are all farm-raised or cultivated products, ensuring safety and compliance. Recommended dishes include farmhouse-style stewed goose, local pork stew, rice paddy fish, farmhouse tofu, seasonal wild vegetables, and sticky bean buns. Cooking styles are primarily iron pot stew and home-style stir-fries. Wild birds and wild mushrooms are not served. Farmhouse portions are generous, so order as needed. Lunch costs approximately 60–90 yuan per person. Estimated cost per person (self-driving) Total budget: 180–320 yuan/person 1. Transportation: Gas + round-trip highway tolls: 110–160 yuan; 2. Admission: Rice Dream Space ticket is 60 yuan; most other wetlands are free. Optional experiences like boat rides are extra; 3. Dining: 70–90 yuan; 4. Miscellaneous: Drinking water, snacks, parking fees, and small souvenirs: 40–70 yuan. Travel tips 1. The attractions are spread out and the drive is long. Do not try to visit every spot in one day; choose 2–3 places for a more in-depth experience. 2. It can be windy by the lakes and wetlands, and there is a significant temperature difference between morning and evening, so bring a windbreaker. The trails can be slippery, so wear non-slip, flat shoes. 3. Stay quiet when birdwatching at Huanzidong and Wolong Lake. Do not make noise, do not feed the birds, and do not enter deep into the wetlands. Telephoto lenses and binoculars are recommended for birdwatching. 4. There are many mosquitoes in the rice paddies and wetlands during autumn, so bring insect repellent. 5. Please protect the ecological environment. Take your trash with you, and do not trample on the rice paddies or reed beds.

Shenyang, a city sculpted by both history and nature, possesses both the profound heritage of being the "birthplace of a dynasty and capital of two generations of emperors" and the ecological poetry of "vast green fields and drifting clouds." From the red walls of the Imperial Palace to the stone elephants at the Northern Tomb, and from the stone bridges of Qipanshan to the grasslands of Faku, every landscape is an extension of the city's texture—a narrative poem interwoven with time and space. It is not boisterous, yet it has its own strength; it is not ostentatious, yet it hides details worth pausing for everywhere. The vermilion palace walls tower into the clouds, forming a sharp contrast with the blue sky and white clouds. The eaves of the corners are faintly visible, hinting at the exquisite structure of traditional architecture. This shade of red is the iconic color of the Shenyang Imperial Palace, symbolizing the majesty of imperial power and the weight of history. Standing beneath the walls, one can almost hear the echoes of hoofbeats and the morning bells and evening drums from a century ago. It is not just a part of the architecture, but a carrier of the city's memory, reminding people that this was once the birthplace of the Qing Dynasty. A stone path winds through the dense forest, with sunlight filtering through the branches to cast dappled shadows, creating a serene and far-reaching atmosphere. This path might be located in Beiling Park or Dongling Park, where the trees are tall and straight, full of greenery, providing a natural oxygen bar for the city. Walking through it, with light steps, one's mind also becomes calm. This is an ideal place for citizens to relax and walk, for the elderly to exercise in the morning, and for children to play; it is also an excellent spot for photography enthusiasts to capture natural light and shadow. A stone elephant stands quietly surrounded by green trees, its body carved with delicacy, its expression solemn yet gentle. This stone elephant is likely one of the guardian beasts in front of the Zhaoling or Fuling Mausoleum of the Qing Dynasty, symbolizing auspiciousness, strength, and stability. Its presence not only adds to the solemnity of the place but also embodies people's wishes for peace and eternity. Surrounded by lush trees, the environment is quiet, as if time has frozen here. It says nothing, yet in the most silent way, it guards the history and memories of this land. An ancient stone bridge spans the stream, its body built of bluestone, with exquisitely carved railings. Beneath the bridge, the water murmurs, and both banks are shaded by green trees. This bridge might be located in Qipanshan or along the Hunhe River; it is not only a passage for traffic but also a focal point of the landscape. Standing on the bridge, one can overlook the flowing water, gaze at the distant green hills, and feel the poetry of "small bridges, flowing water, and households." It has witnessed the footsteps of countless passersby and carried the occurrence of countless stories; it is an indispensable "poetic node" in the city. Vast green hills stretch out under the blue sky and white clouds. The clouds are thick and layered, and sunlight pierces through the gaps to shine on the earth, creating an effect of alternating light and shadow. This scene might have been captured in the hilly areas of Faku or Kangping. The vastness of the sky and the tranquility of the earth form a strong contrast, making one feel the grandeur of nature and the insignificance of humanity. This is a pure land far from the hustle and bustle of the city, a space where the soul can be released. Endless green fields shine brightly under the sun, with distant mountains looming, and the sky as blue as if washed. These fields might be the rice paddies or grasslands in Shenbei New District or Sujiatun District. The lush vegetation not only beautifies the environment but also provides an important ecological barrier for the city. This is a classroom for children to learn about nature, a canvas for photography enthusiasts to capture the changing seasons, and a haven for city residents to escape the concrete jungle and return to the countryside. A path shaded by dense trees, where sunlight spills through the gaps in the leaves, forming spots of light. The light and shadow on the ground are intertwined, dreamlike and fantastic. This path might be located on the campus green space of Liaoning University or Northeastern University. The trees are tall and dense, forming a natural green tunnel. Walking through it feels like being in a fairy tale world. The changes in light and shadow are constantly evolving with time and wind direction; every moment is a unique landscape. Looking up from a low angle, the blue sky is clear, and a few green leaves sway gently in the wind. The branches stretch out, forming a simple and poetic picture. This photo might have been taken in the green belt near Youth Park or Zhongshan Square. It has no grand scene, but it touches the heart with the smallest details—a leaf, a ray of sunlight, a piece of blue sky—constituting the beauty most easily overlooked in city life. The vast grassland extends to the horizon, the grass is green, and a few low buildings or yurts are dotted in the distance. The sky is covered with thick clouds, foreshadowing the coming wind and rain. This grassland might be located in the Faku or Kangping area, a typical northern grassland landscape. This is a great place for herdsmen to graze, tourists to camp, and photographers to take pictures. The vastness of the grassland makes one's heart open, and the whistling of the wind seems to be telling the ancient legends of the nomadic people. Neat farmland or pastures, with a few houses or farmsteads visible in the distance. The sky is overcast, but the light is soft, and the overall atmosphere is quiet and warm. These fields might be located in the agricultural villages of Yuhong District or Xinmin City. This is a transition zone between the city and the countryside, possessing both the orderliness of modern agriculture and the warmth of traditional farming. The smoke from kitchen chimneys in the morning, the birds returning in the evening, and the figures working in the fields constitute a vivid "picture of pastoral life." When an antique-style pavilion encapsulates ten thousand years of Liaobei's history within four floors In Tieling's old town, on Wenhua Street in Yinzhou District, a building with blue tiles and white walls stands quietly by the roadside. Its upturned eaves and antique-style pavilion roof are partially hidden by the greenery of the roadside trees. In front of the building stands a stone sculpture—a double-holed stone knife, a bronze axe, and a chicken-crest pot are stacked together from bottom to top, condensing the symbols of the Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Liao-Jin Age into three silent symbols. Stepping through the gate, the entrance to the exhibition hall is shaped like a pottery jar. The museum isn't large, with a building area of 7,000 square meters, four floors, and four exhibition halls. But once inside, one discovers that nearly five thousand sets of artifacts unfold the story of Liaobei from prehistoric times to modern times, layer by layer. The first floor houses the "Tieling Local History Exhibition." Mammoth molars and the "Changtu Man" skull fossil are displayed in the most prominent positions. Standing before that set of mammoth tusks, the curved tusks taller than a person, one sees a stark contrast to the icy landscape of tens of thousands of years ago. Now, only the skeletons remain, gazing at one another through the glass. The second floor houses the "Liaobei Historical Relics Exhibition." Inside a display case lies a bronze axe from the Shang and Zhou dynasties—over nineteen centimeters long, with a seventeen-centimeter-wide blade, flat and thin, yet once a symbol of power and conquest. Excavated from a site in Faku County, it is the museum's prized possession. Next to it are intricately carved Western Han dynasty bronze plaques; the clearly legible epitaph of Xiao Yi, the Liao dynasty's Northern Chancellor; the joint epitaph of Feng Kai's parents from the Jin dynasty; and a white-glazed chicken-head ewer from the Liao dynasty Ding kiln, its glaze warm and lustrous. On one wall, the story of the Northern Song emperors Huizong and Qinzong's imprisonment in Yinzhou is depicted in a realistic scene; under the dim lighting, the sense of their imprisonment seems almost palpable. The blood oath of Yelü Liuge at Jinshan, Nurhaci's conquest of Tieling City, and Emperor Kangxi's eastern tour and stay there are all vividly recreated in oil paintings and scenes. The third floor houses the "Tieling Past - Liaobei Folk Customs Exhibition." The entrance is an antique-style gatehouse, with red lanterns and small stone lions, instantly transporting visitors back to the Liaobei countryside a century ago. An entire wall is adorned with folk custom paintings: rolling iron hoops, making sticky rice cakes, pickling sauerkraut, and Errenzhuan (a traditional folk art form), each etched into the memories of old Tieling residents. Clay sculptures of everyday figures—squatting to play chess, driving carts to sell goods, and dancing the Yangko—are lifelike. Display cases contain shuttles for weaving and sickles for farming, each item imbued with the atmosphere of bygone days. A scene recreated in a Republican-era blacksmith's shop echoes with the sounds of hammering, seemingly traveling through time, creating a unique resonance with the hoes and horseshoes in the display cases. On the west side of the courtyard in front of the building stands a large fiberglass relief sculpture, "The Ancestors of Xichagou." Inspired by a Western Han Dynasty bronze openwork plaque unearthed in Xifeng County, it possesses a simple yet elegant charm. As I left the museum, dusk was approaching. Looking back at the blue-tiled, white-walled building, nearly five thousand sets of artifacts encapsulate ten thousand years of a city's history within its four floors. Those bronze axes, chicken-crest pots, mammoth ivory, along with the clay figurines of sticky rice cakes in the folk art exhibition, have preserved some things from this city that were on the verge of being blown away by the winds of time.

They have few visitors, beautiful scenery, and are free to visit, perfect for pure relaxation. 🚗 📍 Xibo ancient town (Xinmin) ✨ Highlights: A free ancient town hidden by the Pu River, featuring old-style homes with blue bricks and gray tiles, rammed earth walls, and distinctive round chimneys on the ground. No commercial noise, just wind chimes and birdsong. The Pu River scenic road is right at the entrance, with fish ponds and rice fields on both sides, very soothing. Plenty of free parking available. 🗺️ Plan: About 30 km from downtown Shenyang, less than 1 hour by car. The town is small, 2 hours is enough for a leisurely visit. Afterward, you can stroll and enjoy the breeze along the Pu River scenic road. 🍜 Food: Few restaurants around the town, so bringing your own snacks for a picnic is recommended. ⚠️ Note: Only accessible by car; wear comfortable shoes as the roads are quite rustic. 📍 Dagujiazi baijiu town (Faku) ✨ Highlights: A free 4A-level attraction! Formerly a royal brewery from the Liao dynasty. Nearby Qixing Mountain offers panoramic views of Shenbei, with Liao dynasty ruins and fortifications at the summit. The village entrance has wide views of the Liao River mudflats. 🗺️ Plan: About 30–40 km from downtown, about 1 hour by car. Visit the ancient village in the morning for cultural photography, then hike Qixing Mountain in the afternoon to watch the Liao River sunset. Thousands of years ago, it was a sacred site for the Khitan royal family’s worship, preserving 3,400 meters of ancient Liao dynasty Great Wall ruins and Liao-Jin dynasty ancient temples. I took my family on a self-driving trip to the Aisin Gioro Royal Museum, which is known as the "Little Jiangnan of Shenyang", to see what it was all about. ⛳️ Aisin Gioro Royal Museum 📍 Address: Banlashan Village, Dagujiako Town, Faku County, Shenyang, Liaoning Province 🚙 Transportation: Self-driving (1-1.5 hours from downtown Shenyang) Shenyang-Kangping Expressway - National Highway 203 🕓 Opening hours: 7:30-16:30 🎫 Tickets: Free You can't tell what's inside the Aisin Gioro Royal Museum just by looking at the name, but it's actually a 4A-level scenic spot 🏯. It was originally a royal brewery in the Liao Dynasty, and was renamed "Zujiafang Distillery" in 1635. The "Zujiafang Baijiu" brewed here was a special tribute wine for the Qing court. It's a very niche attraction. It used to cost 50 yuan 💴 for a ticket, but now it's free. A very important point is that the 🅿️ parking lot is also free! This place can only be reached by car. The Shenyang-Kangping Expressway 🛣 and National Highway 203 have speed limits, so you can't drive too fast. Instead, you can enjoy the scenery along the way 🏞. Don't underestimate this place. It has four intangible cultural heritages 💎 (wine sea, ancient papermaking, stone pot, mud cellar) and five honors 🏆 (Liaoning Time-honored Brand, Shanghai World Expo Gold Award, Manchu Brewing Heir, Royal First Wine Cellar, National Tourist Attraction). The scenery in the Royal Museum is ancient and quaint 🏯, very suitable for taking photos, especially in Hanfu, cheongsam... The scenery has some Jiangnan water town charm 🎐, very photogenic. There are also city walls, cannons, ancient pavilions, temples, wine cellars... and other places to take photos 📸. The scenic area takes about 2 hours ⏳ to visit, and it may take longer if you take a lot of photos. There are snacks 🥞 for sale at the entrance of the scenic area, but they are not very tasty, so you can bring some food. There is also wine for sale, and many people buy it. 📌 Hidden play: There is a small area in the parking lot for children to play, which most people don't notice. Adults can also play.

Hiking to Huanzi Cave Reservoir, found a lot of small garlic roots. It's the season for digging wild vegetables. If you don't go out now, it will be too late. In this weather of four or five degrees above zero, we bravely headed straight to Faku Huanzi Cave Reservoir. Leaving the urban area, heading north along Huanghe Street, passing through Daomeng Space, and then all the way on the national highway, passing through several towns like Taotun, Dengshibao, and Xiushuiziko. These places are quite nice to visit. It takes about two hours to reach the destination. The scenery is calm and peaceful, with the sky and water blending into one, stretching endlessly... Although it's not as big as Caihu Lake, the scenery is still quite nice. The most important thing is that mom finally dug up the first batch of wild vegetables this year - small garlic roots. This thing doesn't taste particularly good, but it is said to have medicinal value and is called Xiebai. There are a lot of them in the fields around the reservoir. Before the farmland is sown, interested friends can come and dig for treasures.
