Lianyungang is beautiful, perfect for visiting in June and July. If you’ve been, you’ve gained
Don’t think Jiangsu’s coast is only about Nantong. Lianyungang in northern Jiangsu—the hometown of Huaguo Mountain and the "city of mountains and sea"—is truly comfortable in June and July🌊!
The Huaguo Mountain monkey troop is active, the beaches of Liandao have clear water and fine sand, Yuwan Waterfall has the most water and you can wade in it, plus you can eat freshly caught swimming crabs. High-speed trains reach here in 2 hours from Nanjing, 3.5 hours from Shanghai, and 2 hours from Qingdao. There are fewer people than Qingdao and prices are lower, so this trip is definitely worth it!
🚄 What’s the best way to get here?
· High-speed train preferred: arrive at Lianyungang Station (about 2 hours from Nanjing South, 1 hour from Xuzhou East, 3.5 hours from Shanghai Hongqiao). From the station, a taxi to Liandao takes about 40 minutes, to Huaguo Mountain about 25 minutes. You can also arrive at Lianyungang East Station (closer to Liandao, near Haiyifang Park).
· Driving highly recommended: attractions are along Gangcheng Avenue and Haitang Road. Huaguo Mountain, Yuwan, Liandao, and Haishang Yuntai Mountain are in different directions. Driving along Huaguo Mountain Avenue and Seaside Avenue connects them freely.
· Ticket prices reference: Huaguo Mountain about 90 yuan (including optional shuttle), Liandao Pier + seaside beach about 50 yuan (slightly higher in peak season), Yuwan about 40 yuan, Haishang Yuntai Mountain about 60 yuan, Kongwang Mountain about 40 yuan, Lianyungang Old Street is free.
🏡 Where to stay without risk?
· For easy sea views → stay in Liandao Town or a guesthouse/hotel by the dike (such as Liandao Resort Hotel). Open the window to see the sea, watch the sunrise early, and step downstairs to Dashawan or Suma Bay beach🏖️. Standard rooms cost 200–500 yuan.
· For affordable food and drinks → stay in Xinpu District (near Haizhou Wanda or Suning Plaza) or by Xugou Seafood Street: many long-established seafood stalls, 20–40 minutes by car to attractions.
· For a cultural vibe → stay near Lianyungang Old Street: a Republican-era old street with the Shanhaiguan ruins, quiet and stylish.
📸 Must-visit highlights (2–3 days just right)
🐒 Day 1 Huaguo Mountain + Yuwan (mountain and water fun)
Morning at Huaguo Mountain—take the shuttle bus up (or walk), see Water Curtain Cave, Sanyuan Palace, and Yunu Peak (the highest peak in Jiangsu, overlooking the port city and sea). Monkeys are most active in June and July but don’t feed them or pull out food to avoid them grabbing bags → In the afternoon, go to Yuwan (about 20 minutes southeast of the city). Walk the Old Dragon Pool’s three-tier waterfall, barefoot in the shallow creek water is super cool, and the water flow is strongest in summer💧.
🌊 Day 2 Liandao + Haishang Yuntai Mountain (mountains and sea in one line)
Morning at Liandao—walk along the seaside boardwalk from Dashawan to Suma Bay (clearer water and finer sand, great for swimming and photos). At low tide, you can pick up small crabs → In the afternoon, drive or charter a car to Haishang Yuntai Mountain (toward the city). Climb to the peak to see Lianyungang port, Liandao, and ships on the sea all in one view, even wider than Huaguo Mountain🌅. In the evening, go to Haiyifang Park to wade and enjoy the sea breeze.
🏛️ Day 3 optional additions
· Lianyungang Old Street: vintage buildings, railway museum, Guochengli Republican courtyard, free to explore and eat.
· Kongwang Mountain: Eastern Han cliff carvings over 200 years older than Dunhuang, the mountain is not high and good for morning exercise.
· Donghai Hot Springs/Crystal City: for those who like hot springs or want to buy crystals, about 40 minutes from the city.
🍜 What to eat for an authentic taste?
· Swimming crab/shrimp/clams🔥: swimming crabs caught in June and July are getting fat, delicious with scallion oil or ginger scallion stir-fry; pick live seafood at Xugou Haitang Road seafood market and have it cooked at the stall (clearly priced), or go to the long-established stalls near Crowne Plaza or the seafood street in the West District.
· Dou Dan: unique to Lianyungang! Made from green bean moth larvae, tastes like egg yolk custard, high in protein. If you dare to try, you must try it. Locals consider it a tonic.
· Small fish pancakes & Chaopai (oven-baked flatbread): thin pancakes rolled with fried small river fish and scallion chili sauce, filling and cheap; Chaopai comes in crispy and soft types, served with lamb soup.
· Cold jelly (yam or pea starch): mixed with garlic paste and chili oil, a summer heat-relief must-have, 5 yuan a bowl at old street stalls.
· Wang tofu (shrimp roe with soft tofu) & Ganyu pancakes with vegetables: common at breakfast stalls in the city.
⚠️ A few practical reminders
· Mosquito, slip, and sun protection: wear slip-resistant shoes on slippery algae-covered steps at Yuwan; wear sunglasses and hats for strong seaside UV; bring mosquito repellent for Liandao’s grassy areas🧴.
· Monkey safety at Huaguo Mountain: don’t carry plastic bags with visible food, zip your backpack tightly, monkeys really grab! Don’t tease or feed them, safety first🐵
· Tide checking for beachcombing: you can beachcomb at Suma Bay and the reef area east of Dashawan 1.5 hours before and after low tide. Check tide tables in advance.
· Avoid seafood scams: watch the scale when buying seafood at markets, confirm cooking fees before ordering; if you have a sensitive stomach, bring garlic or herbal remedies.
· Peak season parking: Liandao scenic area limits vehicles in July and August. It’s recommended to park at P1 or P2 outside the dike and take the shuttle bus into the island. Arrive early for a spot.
Lianyungang is unpretentious, with only the monkey calls of Huaguo Mountain, the waves of Suma Bay, and the steam rising from a plate of scallion ginger stir-fried swimming crab.
Take advantage of the clearest water, fattest crabs, and coolest mountain streams in June and July to come to this "mountain and sea fairy city" for a breeze—this trip is truly worth it!💖
