Best shooting time: 9-11 AM, soft light, very ethereal photos Best shooting spot: Goddess Peak viewing platform, front view for the most complete shot Tip: Use a wide-angle lens to capture both people and Goddess Peak together for a spectacular effect When I was there, there was a sea of clouds, and Goddess Peak was half hidden in it, like a fairy in a wonderland. The scene was breathtaking. Took many shots, each one looks like wallpaper. TOP 2 Giant Python Emerging from the Mountain — Maximum impact A 128-meter-high granite pillar, like a giant python breaking out of the mountain, head raised straight to the sky. Standing underneath is truly shocking, your neck will get sore from looking up. Best shooting time: 3-5 PM, sunlight at an angle, stone textures are especially clear Best shooting spot: Giant Python viewing platform, shooting from below is most majestic Tip: Stand at the edge of the platform and shoot from a low angle to make the python look even taller This spot is a masterpiece with every snap, the natural craftsmanship is truly awe-inspiring. I spent almost half an hour shooting here, trying all angles, every photo looks great. TOP 3 West Coast Plank Road — Birthplace of sea of clouds masterpieces West Coast is truly the most beautiful plank road in Sanqing Mountain! At an average altitude of 1600 meters, it’s built suspended on a cliff, walking on it feels like strolling in the clouds. Best shooting time: 6-8 AM, highest chance of sea of clouds Best shooting spot: Several viewing platforms in the middle of the plank road, with the widest views Tip: Shoot from behind! Capture people walking on the plank road with the sea of clouds as the background, very atmospheric I was super lucky; the sea of clouds was especially thick that morning. Walking on the plank road, clouds were beneath my feet, and distant peaks poked out above the clouds like islands. The feeling was truly magical. The photos looked so much like Huangshan to my friends. TOP 4 Sunshine Coast — Best spot for sunrise Sunshine Coast is on the east side, a great place to watch the sunrise. The plank road is built along the cliff with a very open view. Best shooting time: Sunrise, golden light shining on the cliff is especially beautiful Best shooting spot: Near Duxian Bridge, best composition Tip: Shoot silhouettes! Capture people’s silhouettes at sunrise for a very atmospheric effect At sunrise, sunlight shines from behind the mountain, turning the cliff and plank road golden, and the sea of clouds also turns golden. The scene is beyond words. TOP 5 Sanqing Palace — Ancient style with a fairy tale vibe A thousand-year-old Taoist ancient building complex hidden in the mountains, very ethereal. Red walls and green tiles paired with surrounding pine trees create a strong ancient fairy tale feeling. TOP 6 Yutai — Panoramic check-in spot Yutai is a popular place to watch the sunrise and a great spot to capture the panoramic view of Sanqing Mountain, with several main peaks visible. Best shooting time: Sunrise or sunset, softest light Best shooting spot: Yutai viewing platform, unobstructed view Tip: Use panorama mode to capture the entire mountain scene Watching the sunrise here is amazing; the sun rises from behind the mountain, slowly illuminating the whole valley. #backpacking2026 Gexian Valley was an exciting stop on our family backpacking adventure, offering a refreshing escape into nature and traditional Chinese scenery. We explored the beautiful valley at a relaxed pace, walking along scenic paths surrounded by lush mountains, streams and peaceful landscapes. The journey was filled with charming views, ancient-style buildings and plenty of opportunities to stop for photos and enjoy the surroundings. As we explored deeper into the valley, the cool mountain air and tranquil atmosphere made the experience even more enjoyable. After a day of walking and sightseeing, we returned to Gexiancun to enjoy the illuminated village and local food. Backpacking through Gexian Valley gave us a wonderful combination of outdoor adventure, cultural discovery and family bonding. It was a memorable experience that reminded us that some of the best travel moments come from simply walking, exploring and enjoying beautiful places together.

#overratedspots Gexian Village is a popular themed resort in Shangrao, famous for its traditional-style architecture, mountain scenery, lantern streets, cable car rides and spectacular night performances. While the setting is undeniably beautiful, visiting during a public holiday can feel very different from the dreamy photos online. Huge crowds gather for the light shows, performances and popular photo spots, making the streets congested and queues frustrating. The atmosphere can become more like a busy theme park than a peaceful mountain retreat. For travellers seeking authentic culture, nature and slow travel, the highly commercialised experience may feel somewhat overrated. The scenery is attractive, but much of the experience revolves around staged entertainment and photography. In my opinion, Gexian Village is worth visiting once, preferably on a weekday or during the off-season, when the crowds are smaller and the beautiful mountain atmosphere can actually be enjoyed.

Travel is convenient with high-speed trains directly to Dexing Station, followed by a shuttle bus to the cable car entrance—both hassle-free and efficient. I recommend the classic loop route without backtracking: take the Gangshou Cableway up the mountain, passing by the thousand-year-old Sanqing Palace, which is quaint and perfect for climbing and praying. At 1,819 meters, Yujing Peak offers panoramic views of mountains and seas of clouds. This area, silent for forty years, has just reopened with limited daily slots that require advance booking. Along the way, walk the Sunshine Coast Cloud Sea Trail, where the forest is serene and you might even encounter lively little squirrels. I arrived at the scenic area's Gangshou cable car at 10:00 AM and, after a quick visit, was down at the Jinsha cable car by 2:00 PM — a total of 4 hours. I had originally booked a five-star hotel in the Mount Sanqing scenic area planning to stay nearby overnight, but after checking the guides I canceled the booking. Mount Sanqing is a 1-hour drive from Wuyuan high-speed rail station and a 2-hour drive from Shangrao high-speed rail station. After getting off the train, you need to go to the bus terminal connected to the station to buy a ticket and take a bus to the scenic area. Whether you stay near Wuyuan station or near Shangrao high-speed rail station, taking the direct shuttle to the scenic area is relatively convenient. The five-star hotels near Shangrao high-speed rail and Wuyuan high-speed rail are much better than those in the Mount Sanqing scenic area and offer better value. Hotels near the Mount Sanqing scenic area are relatively old. Be sure to go up via the Gangshou cable car to avoid queuing. I came down via the Jinsha cable car. I arrived at the upper station at 1:30 PM and waited 15 minutes in line. It was a weekend, so there were still quite a few people. You can book bus tickets on the Xingrong Travel mini program.

Don’t rush mountain travel on the first day; confirm luggage storage, breakfast, and check-out arrangements for the next day at your lodging. The return cableway entrance and your lodging may be on different sides, so before booking confirm your ascent and descent entrances and how you will handle luggage. Arrange your onward travel after descending, and don’t put unconfirmed shuttle times into a tight itinerary. Lodging conditions and cableway arrangements can change with operators and park announcements; when booking, confirm details directly with the lodging and rely on official Sanqing Mountain park information.

Mount Sanqing truly lives up to its reputation as the "Number One Immortal Mountain under Heaven." With its towering, unique rock formations and ethereal mist, the scenery is absolutely stunning. Getting to Mount Sanqing is quite convenient. If you fly into Shangrao, you can take the K100 bus from the airport directly to the terminal, Shangrao High-Speed Railway Station (fare: 5 yuan). From there, there are customized shuttle buses that go directly to the Waishuangxi or Jinsha cableways. The trip takes about 2 hours (fare: 40–50 yuan) and is operated by Xingrong Travel. Shuttles run from 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM, departing approximately every 30 minutes. There is also another shuttle route from Shangrao High-Speed Railway Station to the Waishuangxi cableway, operating from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM (fare: about 30 yuan). You can purchase tickets via the Ganyuexing mini-program. There are 3 cableways to ascend Mount Sanqing. The most popular one among tourists is the Jinsha cableway, which takes you directly to the core scenic area, Nanqing Garden, where you can see attractions like "Python Emerging from the Mountain" and "Oriental Goddess." However, during holidays, there are often long queues to ascend. The Jinsha cableway has a maximum daily capacity of only 7,000 passengers, and once it's full, no more tickets are sold. Therefore, remember to book your admission tickets and cableway tickets several days in advance to avoid disappointment. Comparatively, the other 2 cableways have fewer tourists. The Waishuangxi cableway terminal is closest to Nanqing Garden. You can combine it with the Jinsha cableway to take a middle-loop route, visiting attractions along the way such as Azalea Valley, Yuxu Terrace, A Thread of Sky, and Wanshou Garden, which takes about 3 to 4 hours. If you ascend via the Gangshou cableway, the closest attraction is the Yuqing Palace at the summit. If you want to visit the West Coast and Sunshine Coast, or climb to the peak of Yujing Peak, you can take this cableway. By the way, you need to reserve a time on the official website to climb to the peak of Yujing Peak. Travelers must arrive on time to ascend; otherwise, you won't be allowed to climb. Although there are so-called large, medium, and small loop routes for touring Mount Sanqing, based on my own travel preferences and laziness index, I didn't choose any of them. The homestay features a gentle, wood-style design that is minimalist, clean, and has a very comfortable atmosphere. The rooms are well-equipped with central air conditioning and smart toilets, showing great attention to hardware. The room hygiene is meticulous, with every corner kept spotless, making for a secure and relaxing stay. You can see rolling green mountains right from the window, and the mountain environment is exceptionally quiet. You can watch the clouds in the mountains in the morning and enjoy the sunset over the hills in the evening.
