Tivoli: Rome's Enchanting Escape of Villas, Gardens, and Ancient Wonders

Wanting a day trip out of Rome, particularly in the heat of summer? Visit Tivoli (an hour's train journey out of Rome) and among the interesting villas to explore, be sure to include Villa D'Este. Take the metro to Tiburtina (blue line, Metro B), then take the overland train to Tivoli. On arrival, walk through the charming old town, following the signs to Villa D'Este. The villa itself is impressive, but step outside and be prepared to be wowed by the splendour of the gardens, the abundance of magnificent fountains, water features and waterfalls, along with statues and sculptures. Originally commissioned by Cardinal D’Este to impress his visitors, today, Villa D’Este lives up to its reputation and still manages to do just that. (It is listed as a world heritage site.) There are numerous walks to meander through – one of the most impressive being the Hundred Fountains walk. This is an attraction you must visit … you won’t be disappointed!
