🎨 Mondrian Singapore Duxton: a hotel inside the energy of the neighbourhood

Mondrian sits beside the shophouses of Duxton and Keong Saik, where restaurants, bars and urban history overlap across a few compact blocks. The hotel does not try to isolate guests from that energy. Instead, it brings it inside through art, colour, music and social spaces.

The building has 302 rooms and suites. A standard King Room is relatively calm, but the concept becomes clearer in the Shophouse Suite, where a contemporary plan refers to Singapore's traditional urban form. The Mondrian Suite works for guests who need the room to function as more than a place to sleep.

The main stage is on the roof. Canyon Club combines a pool, cocktails and a note of 1970s glamour. Below, Christina's operates as a lively bar, while the hotel's dining venues support the evening rhythm of Duxton. Mondrian also places visible emphasis on art and art-focused experiences, so the creative programme does not stop in the lobby.

Best for: friends, couples, a short weekend and travellers choosing nightlife, restaurants and contemporary culture.

The honest note: this is not a silent retreat. Social energy is part of the product, particularly in the evening and around the rooftop.

Save this for a more energetic Singapore stay. Would you choose Mondrian for the design, the neighbourhood or the rooftop pool?

🌿 PARKROYAL COLLECTION Pickering: a hotel that became part of the city landscape

Pickering is instantly recognisable through cascading greenery, wave-like concrete terraces and elevated sky gardens. WOHA did not simply decorate the building with plants. The architecture uses greenery as space, shade and a visual connection between the city and the hotel.

The best way to understand the project is to move from the ground upwards. In the lobby, stone, water and planting soften the scale of the structure. Higher levels reveal garden terraces, while the infinity pool is lined with the hotel's famous cabanas, shaped like oversized cages floating among the greenery. Guest rooms look towards the city through this planted layer, making the central location feel calmer.

The hotel is particularly practical for exploring Chinatown, Tanjong Pagar and the business district. It provides immediate access to the city without forcing a choice between architecture and nature. This is one of the rare cases where the widely photographed facade genuinely explains the experience inside.

Best for: modern architecture lovers, first-time Singapore visitors and travellers who want a central address with a strong environmental idea.

The honest note: Pickering has become a visual icon, so public areas can feel active. For complete quiet, Sentosa is a better direction.

Save this for a green architecture itinerary. Would you like to see this approach used in more dense cities?

🌿 Capella Singapore: an island resort within reach of the city

Capella sits across roughly 30 acres of greenery on Sentosa and connects two very different versions of Singapore. On one side are restored late nineteenth-century buildings known as Tanah Merah. On the other is contemporary architecture by Foster + Partners, curving into the hillside and almost disappearing among the trees.

The hotel has 113 rooms, suites, villas and manors. For a couple, I would look at a sea-view room with a balcony. For a longer stay or a small group, a villa with a separate living area and private pool changes the experience completely. Capella feels less like a base for sightseeing and more like a destination that deserves one unscheduled day.

The story continues through its spaces. Cassia offers a contemporary approach to Cantonese cuisine, Auriga Spa provides the quietest part of the day, and the restored colonial buildings create one of the most memorable arrivals in Singapore.

Best for: couples, special occasions and travellers who want to combine the city with a complete resort experience.

The honest note: Sentosa gives you privacy and space, but trips to Orchard, Chinatown and the main urban districts require planning.

Save this for a Singapore journey that needs more than city energy. Would you choose the sea-view room or a private villa?
