Enjoying Art in a Century-Old Icon | Singapore

It’s a place where Singapore’s history is woven together beneath a stunning golden roof. 📍 National Gallery Singapore, 1 St Andrew's Road, Singapore. This is one of my top picks in Singapore. The gallery is a masterpiece itself, seamlessly merging two historic landmarks—the former Supreme Court and City Hall. The highlight hits you the moment you arrive: a massive golden canopy that bridges the two buildings. It’s futuristic yet complements the classical Roman columns perfectly. Inside, you’re greeted by a grand, airy wooden staircase hall, bathed in beautiful natural light streaming through the glass ceiling. I was particularly moved by the collection of paintings and sculptures depicting the lives of Singapore’s pioneers. 👉🏻 "Indian Worker" (oil painting): The subject's gaze captures the sheer grit and resilience of those who built this city. 👉🏻 "Bondage" (terracotta sculpture): A powerful portrayal of struggle and constraint. 👉🏻 "Woman with boy": A Nanyang-style piece where traditional Chinese brushwork brings local life to life with such charm. Walking through these halls truly brings Singapore’s history into focus. A quick tip from my visit: Selfie sticks and long equipment are strictly prohibited in the exhibition galleries. Don’t worry if you have them, though—there are lockers available. You’ll need a coin for the deposit, but the system returns it in full once you retrieve your items. It’s super convenient!
