[Puerto Rico] World Heritage Site San Felipe del Morro Fort 🏰

🇵🇷Castillo San Felipe del Morro 📍San Juan, Puerto Rico Puerto Rico, an island in the Caribbean Sea, was discovered by Columbus in 1493 and became important as a Spanish colony and as a transit point connecting Spain with its colonies in South America. This fortress was built in 1539 to monitor ships entering San Juan. In addition to monitoring ships, it also served to protect the city from Caribbean pirates and attacks and invasions from other countries, and it has been renovated and expanded over the course of about 200 years since its construction. The fortress, with an outer wall 40m above sea level and 6m thick, is equipped with over 400 cannons and was said to be impregnable at the time. Inside the fort were barracks, warehouses, prisons, and more, and the maze-like underground passages connecting them could have held up to 4,500 people. The interior of El Morro is now a museum, and it also offers a spectacular view of the Atlantic Ocean. #OverseasTravelRecord
