Colombia's most colorful town Guatape

Guatape is only a short bus ride from Medellin and the combination of the zocalo-decorated town and nearby Piedra del Penol, a huge monolith overlooking a flooded dam, is worth a visit. You have to buy a ticket and climb over 740 steps to reach the viewing tower on top of this monolithic rock, but the sweeping 360º views of Guatape Lake and the surrounding El Penol region are well worth the price of admission. In Guatape it's a short tuk-tuk ride or an easy half-hour walk from the square.
