Dream Anniversary Stay Worth the 30-Year Wait

Staying at The Datai had been a dream ever since 1995, when we first wanted to book it for our honeymoon but couldn’t quite afford it. Then, in 2020, we planned to visit as part of our 25th Wedding Anniversary trip, but the Covid pandemic forced us to cancel. Fast forward to 2025, for our 30th anniversary, and we finally booked The Datai again. The plan was to spend six nights in Singapore (including one incredible night at Raffles), then three nights at Berjaya Hotel in Langkawi to explore, before finishing off with five nights at The Datai. The hotel arranged a taxi to pick us up from Berjaya, and we were thrilled when their beautiful The Datai mini van arrived. The 30-minute drive brought us to the majestic gates, and down the access road we went. At last, we had arrived! We had booked a rainforest villa but were kindly upgraded to a premium rainforest villa (No. 9), overlooking a stream with the soothing sounds of the rainforest just outside. The villa was stunning—beautifully decorated—and we were welcomed with champagne, cakes, and sweet treats. Within moments, monkeys appeared on the roof—clearly hoping new guests meant food! Breakfast every day was delightful, fresh, and delicious. The only hiccup was when my wife ordered crab omelette one morning, and it took over 30 minutes to arrive—but, to be fair, it was worth the wait! For dinners, we dined at each restaurant, with Gulai House being our favorite; we actually went twice. Lunch by the pool was quick and tasty, with attentive service. The staff even handed out complimentary ice cream and fresh fruit daily, though you had to watch out for the cheeky noon-time hornbill, known for stealing grapes! We tried various free and paid nature walks, which should be booked in advance since they fill up quickly. A spa session was an indulgent treat, albeit the priciest one we’ve ever experienced (£500 for both of us), but undeniably worth it. On our actual anniversary day, we hired an outside photographer and makeup artist (recommended by the hotel) for a photo and video shoot around the stunning grounds. The hotel staff, especially Prem Prabakaran and her team, went above and beyond to make our day unforgettable. Our heartfelt thanks to everyone for their efforts. A highlight was the cocktail evening hosted by the hotel management, where we had the opportunity to talk to the manager about our love for The Datai. We shared with him what really makes this hotel outstanding—the staff. Every single person we encountered was exceptional, genuinely friendly, and so passionate about their work and dedication to the guests. It took us 30 years to get here, but the experience proved to be well worth the wait. We’re already planning our next visit—and this time, for a longer stay. If only Langkawi were a little closer to the UK!
