June 2024 First Visit Itsukushima Shrine is located on the island of Itsukushima (formerly known as Miyajima) in Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. The shrine was founded around 593 AD and has a history of about 1400 years. It mainly enshrines three goddesses (Tagorihime-no-Mikoto, Ichikishimahime-no-Mikoto, and Tagitsuhime-no-Mikoto). Built on the tidal flats of the Seto Inland Sea, the large torii gate standing in the sea in front of the shrine is considered one of the "Three Views of Japan" and is the most famous landmark on Itsukushima Island, also a World Heritage Site. The large torii gate standing in the sea is often regarded as a symbol of Itsukushima Shrine and even Japanese culture as a whole. It is spectacular whether viewed from afar or up close. The island is home to many deer that are not afraid of humans and are very approachable. During low tide, you can walk down to the tidal flats to see the torii gate, while during high tide, the torii gate is submerged in seawater. Therefore, you will find many shells attached to the pillars when viewed up close. It is recommended to check the tide schedule before visiting. The island also has many delicious shops, such as oysters and fried maple leaves, offering a unique flavor.
