#must-tryfood After travelling through Southern Thailand for 19 days and finally returning to Hatyai, we wanted something simple. No fancy restaurant, no complicated dishes, just something local. That was how we ended up at Thanadsri Hatyai, a third-generation restaurant with quite a collection of local awards. Three generations running the same place? That alone made me curious. I kept wondering… what makes locals keep coming back for so many years? So instead of ordering a whole table of dishes, we started with something very simple — their koay teow thng. And honestly, the first mouthful gave me the answer. The fish balls and fish cakes immediately stood out. The fish flavour was more noticeable and natural, and the texture was much chewier than the softer versions I’m used to. It had that old-school feeling — simple, traditional and not overly processed. Then we tried the coffee. This was another pleasant surprise. It wasn’t as sweet and heavy as the Malaysian-style coffee I’m familiar with, but it wasn’t as light as many Singapore coffees either. Right in between, and surprisingly well balanced for my taste. What I like about places like this is that they don’t need to shout for attention. Their history, local recognition and generations of experience seem to speak for themselves. After so many days travelling around Southern Thailand, this felt like a genuine local discovery rather than another tourist stop. If you are in Hatyai, maybe don’t overthink it. Come in, order a bowl of their koay teow thng, have a coffee and see for yourself. Sometimes the simplest bowl tells you the most about a place. #hotdiscussions #foodietravel
