A 1000 year old craft, Tie-Dyeing

✨We visited the Duan family’s tie dye in Zhoucheng village (周城段氏扎染) in Dali, and watched the beautiful traditional tie-dyeing process. The village is famous as the “Hometown of Bai People’s Tie-dyeing Art.”Blue and White heaven, my two favourite pairing of colours 😍✨ Every bit of fabric is first tied and wrapped extremely tight like the white cloth you see on the first image. The aim is to make sure all the parts that are not tied, are dyed (I can’t prevent the rhyming that is obviously meant to be…). This amazing craftsmanship has been around for over 1000 years! The TravelChinaGuide explains the process further: “The dyeing process involves first soaking the 'knots' into clear water, followed by immersing them in the dye vat for a period of time before taking them out to dry. After drying, they are again put back in the dye vat and the process is repeated until a satisfactory color is achieved. Once dried, stitches are taken out of the knots and the cloth is smoothen out to reveal that part of the cloth which was sewn and form beautiful flower patterns and the dye crease marks.” #art#historicculture#summervacation#urbanexplorer
