Ancient-style temple in the suburbs of Chengdu

Huoguo Temple is located in Huoguo Village, Chongxing Township, outside the North Gate of Pidu, Chengdu, Sichuan. According to the two over 700-year-old Arhat pines in front of its Guanyin Hall, the temple was built at least before the Yuan Dynasty. Inside the temple, there was originally a bronze bell cast in the eleventh year of the Ming Chenghua period (1475), approximately 4.5 feet tall with a circumference of about 1 zhang. In the 1920s, Mr. Xu Zixiu, one of the famous 'Five Elders and Seven Sages' of Chengdu and a Confucian scholar, founded the private Dacheng Middle School in Chengdu (now Chengdu No. 3 Middle School). In 1939, to avoid air raids by Japanese invaders, Dacheng Junior Middle School moved from Fan Street in Chengdu to Huoguo Temple in Chongxing Township, outside the North Gate of Pidu County, until it moved back to Chengdu in 1944. During this period, nine classes (Classes 27-35) were enrolled. Huoguo Temple has now been renovated and is open to the public for free.
