Altitude is 800+ meters, making it comfortable for escaping the heat, though there is a significant temperature difference between morning and night. It is recommended to stock up on water and snacks in Suining County. 🏨Accommodation Recommendations (Top choices for two days) ✅Best for public transit users: Stay in a stilt house homestay within Shangbao Village. 120–220/night. You are right in the middle of the ancient village and terraced fields, making it convenient to wake up early for morning mist and sea of clouds, eat farmhouse food, and avoid traveling back and forth into the mountains for two days. ✅Alternative: Zhaishi Town More amenities, convenient dining, and a 20-minute drive from Shangbao. Suitable if you want to explore the ancient town on your way back the next day. ❌Not recommended to stay in Suining County for the whole trip; commuting 40 minutes on mountain roads each day is a waste of time. 🚌Transportation Route Overview (Public Transit Focus) Arrival (Two main transfer points) High-speed rail priority: Huaihua South Station / Dongkou Station → Bus to Suining County. The bus from Huaihua South to Suining takes about 2 hours; Dongkou Station is closer and has more frequent departures. Suining Bus Station → Shangbao Village: No direct bus. You must carpool or arrange a pickup with your homestay. It costs 30–40 yuan one way and takes 40 minutes. This is the most feasible option for solo travelers. Alternatively, take a bus from Suining to Zhaishi Town (10 yuan, 20 minutes), then carpool from Zhaishi to Shangbao, which is cheaper. From Shaoyang: Shaoyang East Bus Station → Suining bus, rolling departures. For groups of 2–4: Carpooling to/from Suining/Zhaishi offers the most freedom and allows you to visit Quyou Valley along the way. ❗Pure public transit: Suining → Zhaishi bus, then find a ride in Zhaishi. Not recommended for solo travelers to enter the mountains too late, as there are almost no vehicles at night. Within the Scenic Area Shangbao Ancient Village is entirely walkable. The stone post road is not large; you can finish the core area in 2–3 hours. Shangbao ↔ Quyou Valley/Liu'e Cave: Only accessible by carpool/taxi; no public transit. Shangbao ↔ Zhaishi Ancient Town: 20-minute carpool. ✅Main Route A | Public Transit/Carpool Reliable Version (In-depth village tour + morning mist terraced fields, best for two days) Day 1: Suining → Shangbao Ancient Kingdom. Afternoon exploring ancient village ruins and terraced field sunsets. Stay at a village homestay. Morning: Take a bus to Suining County, eat noodles, stock up on water/snacks, and carpool to Shangbao Village. Drop off luggage at the homestay and walk the core route: Village entrance → Bluestone ancient post road → Jinluan Hall ruins → Flagpole stone + ancient horse-tethering tree → Stilt house alleys → Terraced field viewing platform. Spend 2–3 hours strolling, observing the village layout and historical ruins. If you have the energy, you can hike to the small beacon tower ruins. In the evening, wait for sunset light and shadows at the terraced field viewing platform. There is a high probability of thin mist after rain. At night, enjoy bacon/oil tea at the homestay and quietly watch the stars. Occasionally, there are bonfires on Fridays and Saturdays. Logic: Entering the village on the first afternoon allows you to adapt to the pace without rushing for the morning mist, and staying in the village secures the best time slot for the next morning. Day 2: Early morning terraced field mist → Choose one (Quyou Valley hike / Zhaishi Ancient Town) → Return. Option A (Nature hike combination, recommended) Wake up early to see the morning mist and sea of clouds at the terraced field viewing platform (best before 8:00 AM, fewest people), then take a leisurely walk through the village. After lunch at a farmhouse, carpool for 15 minutes to Quyou Valley + Liu'e Cave Waterfall. Enjoy a light 2.5-hour hike on the gentle wooden boardwalk along the stream, escape the heat, and reach the 30-meter waterfall at the end. Afterward, carpool back to Suining County and take a bus/high-speed rail home. Option B (Cultural ancient town combination, more public transit-friendly) Wake up early for the morning mist and explore the ancient village. Carpool/hitch a ride down to Zhaishi Ancient Town to visit the Xihe Old Street, Wind and Rain Bridge, and the old county government office. It is a thousand-year-old Suining county seat, free and very pristine. Take a bus from Zhaishi back to Suining, then transfer for your return trip. ✅Alternative Route B | Group Carpool/Self-drive Complete Version (Shangbao + Quyou Valley + Zhaishi, all in two days) Day 1: Suining → First to Quyou Valley and Liu'e Cave (cooler in the forest in the afternoon) → Shangbao Ancient Kingdom. Stay in the village and watch the sunset. Day 2: Early morning terraced field mist and in-depth tour of Shangbao → Visit Zhaishi Ancient Town on the way back, return in the afternoon. This is the most classic and complete route, only suitable for those with a car/carpool. Relying solely on public transit is very tiring due to timing constraints. ✅Alternative Route C | Pure Leisure/Low-Hike Version (In-depth tour of Shangbao Ancient Kingdom only) Day 1: Carpool from Suining to Shangbao, stroll around the ancient village, take photos of terraced fields, relax at the homestay, and stay in the village. Day 2: Morning mist, walk around the village, experience Miao embroidery/farmhouse crafts. Skip Quyou Valley and carpool back after lunch. Suitable for those who dislike hiking, prefer niche cultural experiences, and want to relax and take photos. Not tiring at all. ✅Alternative Route D | Bijie/Guizhou Departure Transfer Version Day 1: Bijie High-speed Rail → Huaihua South → Bus to Suining → Carpool to Shangbao, stay in Shangbao. Day 2: Shangbao morning mist + ancient village, return trip Suining → Huaihua South → Bijie. ⚠️Key Tips to Avoid Pitfalls Transportation Pitfall 1: There is no direct rural passenger bus to Shangbao. Do not mistakenly assume there is public transit into the village. Solo travelers must contact the homestay in advance to help arrange a carpool; do not hail illegal taxis in Suining at the last minute. There are no convenience stores or grocery shops in Shangbao. Buy water, dry food, and snacks in the county seat in advance. Only eat at homestays/farmhouses. The bluestone paths are mossy and slippery with morning/evening dew; non-slip shoes are a necessity. There is a large temperature difference between day and night in the mountains; bring a light jacket even in summer. Mosquito repellent is a must. The mist clears after 8:00 AM; you must wake up early to see the sea of clouds and morning mist. It gets dark quickly in the mountains after 5:00 PM, and there are no streetlights. Quyou Valley stops entry at 5:00 PM. The waterfall looks better on rainy days, but the boardwalks are more slippery. The best time is during the high-water season from June to August. Respect Miao and Dong customs. Do not step on ancient ruins, do not take photos of elderly people without permission, and observe etiquette when entering the Drum Tower. Mountain roads have many curves; bring motion sickness medicine if you are prone to it. The roads into the village are narrow; drive slowly and be careful when passing other vehicles. It is not recommended to try to squeeze both the Tie Shan Forest and Dayuan Ancient Miao Village into two days. Public transportation is too scattered; prioritize choosing one.

Shaoyang September travel guide🍂. Let's break down the budget💰: You can have a great time for just over CNY 1,000 per person for 3 days and 2 nights✨! My round-trip high-speed train from Changsha to Shaoyang was CNY 160🚄, 2 nights of accommodation was CNY 200 (cheaper if you share a room), Langshan joint ticket CNY 136 + Nanshan Pasture CNY 55 = CNY 191 for tickets, daily average of CNY 80 for rice noodles and local meals, and CNY 50 for shared car rental in the city. Overall, it didn't break the bank🍃~ The weather in Shaoyang in September is cool🌤️, with daytime highs of 26–29°C and lows of 17–21°C🧥. There's a bit of rain at the beginning of the month, and the temperature difference between day and night is significant. Short sleeves during the day + a jacket at night is the standard. Honestly, if you don't bring a jacket, you'll really suffer🥶. 🏨 Accommodation tips (no-fail recommendations) For your arrival in the city, I recommend the Daxiang District/Shuangqing District🚄. The Weiyuan International Hotel has a new Chinese style and even includes a tea set, starting from CNY 136—super friendly for lazy travelers🍵. There are plenty of chain hotel options in the CNY 100–200+ price range nearby. Book on Trip.com a week in advance; weekend prices spike, so don't wait until the day of❌. Homestays at the foot of Langshan are CNY 200–300/night; choose these if you want to open your window and see Danxia landforms🌄. For Nanshan Pasture, if you want to see the stars, book a grassland homestay for CNY 150–250/night. However, in September, I don't recommend booking the cheapest yurts without air conditioning; you'll wake up freezing in the middle of the night and lose your mind⛺. 💰 Popular price guide Langshan Line B adult package ticket is CNY 136🎫, including Tianyi Lane + Lajiao Peak + Bajiaozhai + Zixiadong, valid for 3 days. Nanshan National Park ticket is CNY 136 for two, and CNY 33 for students🎓. My top money-saving tips👇: Use your student ID for high-speed train discounts. The Langshan joint ticket saves 40% compared to buying individual tickets. I highly recommend driving or chartering a car🚙; the distance between county attractions is long and the mountain roads are winding—taking the bus will drive you crazy. 🚶 My lazy itinerary (no-rushing version) Day 1️⃣: Danxia wonder route🏞️ Changsha → Shaoyang → Langshan. Spend the afternoon exploring Bajiaozhai to see the Danxia peaks🌅. Honestly, I was stupid enough to try to visit all the Langshan spots in one day, and my legs suffered to the point of collapse🦵. Later, I switched to the lazy version—only picking Bajiaozhai + Tianyi Lane, and doing a night tour with lanterns to see the Danxia light and shadows in the evening. Stay at a Langshan homestay and eat authentic firewood-smoked bacon🥩. Day 2️⃣: Grassland pastoral route🐄 Finish Langshan's Lajiao Peak + Tianyi Lane in half a day, then drive to Chengbu Nanshan Pasture in the afternoon🌿. With 230,000 mu of grassland, herds of cattle and sheep, and slowly turning windmills, every photo looks like a Windows desktop background📸. Drink freshly boiled milk at the pasture restaurant🥛, paired with yogurt cheese—dairy lovers will be thrilled! Stay in a pasture yurt⛺. Day 3️⃣: Cultural secret route🏛️ After watching the sunrise at Nanshan → Huangsang Nature Reserve → Suining Ancient City to wear Miao costumes for photos (CNY 30/hour)📷. In the afternoon, return to the city to visit the Baoqing Ancient City Wall (free) + Beita. In the evening, head to the Hongqi Road Night Market to gnaw on Wugang braised snacks and slurp Shaoyang rice noodles🍜. The noodles are smooth, the soup is fresh, and adding a spoonful of chili oil will wake you up instantly🌶️. 🍜 Foodie hits (CNY 10–30 per person) 🌟 Must-eat breakfast: Shaoyang rice noodles, thick noodles + beef topping, Old Street Hui Rice Noodle Shop, about CNY 15/bowl 🌟 Signature dish recommendation: Blood duck🦆, the duck meat is sour, spicy, and crispy; the version with mountain pepper oil at Longhui Old Stove is amazing, about CNY 50/serving 🌟 Night market must-visit: Dongfeng Road Night Market for super spicy flavored shrimp + Nanmenkou sugar oil baba 🌟 Souvenirs: Pork blood balls (look for the Tantou Liu family traditional smoked ones)🥩 💡 Traveler's notes · The temperature difference in September is large, so bring a windbreaker. Wear non-slip shoes in Langshan👟; there's a high chance of seeing a sea of clouds after the rain🌧️ · The Langshan joint ticket is valid for 3 days; don't be silly and buy individual attraction tickets · Wild rock fungus priced below CNY 80/jin might be artificial, so don't be greedy for a bargain · Chartering a car is about CNY 300/day; splitting it between 2–3 people is ten thousand times more comfortable than taking the bus🚗 · Booking hotels, checking tickets, and reading reviews can all be done with one click on Trip.com—a godsend for lazy travelers📱 Honestly, Shaoyang, this hidden gem in central Hunan, is severely underrated💎. Visiting in September is neither crowded nor hot. A slow three-day trip won't break the bank🥹. Follow my itinerary, and if anyone complains about suffering, I'll really lose it!😂

A Miao and Dong hidden gem tucked away in the mountains, free from crowds, full of greenery, ancient villages, and terraced fields. The pace is slow and leisurely—perfect for those looking to escape the city. A 2-day, 1-night trip is just right. Beginners can follow this itinerary directly. 📅 2-day itinerary Day 1: Shangbao Ancient Kingdom → Quyou Valley Liu'e Cave Waterfall In the morning, head straight to Shangbao Ancient Kingdom, a free, thousand-year-old Miao royal city ruin. Spend 2–3 hours exploring at a leisurely pace. Check out the Jinluan Hall ruins, the moss-covered ancient post road, the flagpole stones, and the horse-tethering ancient trees. Climb to the terraced field viewing platform; after the rain, you're likely to encounter mountain mist, creating a perfect atmosphere. In the afternoon, drive to Quyou Valley and hike along the forest boardwalk to the Liu'e Cave Waterfall. The forest is cool and refreshing, perfect for relaxing and clearing your mind. ⚠️ Note: Quyou Valley stops entry at 5:00 PM and closes during heavy rain, so plan accordingly. Stay at a local guesthouse in the village at night; open your window to the mountain forest nightscape. Day 2: Zhaishi Ancient Town → Dayuan Ancient Miao Village In the morning, explore the thousand-year-old Zhaishi Ancient Town. It's not very commercialized, with winding stone-paved streets and scattered Ming and Qing dynasty wooden houses. It's very comfortable to walk around and take photos. In the afternoon, head to Dayuan Ancient Miao Village. The old village has crisscrossing alleys, well-preserved Yinzi houses, and wind-and-rain bridges. It's quiet and rustic. You can head home after exploring. 📸 Photo spots & travel tips ✅ Shangbao Ancient Kingdom: The ruins of Jinluan Hall for an ancient vibe; the bluestone ancient post road for shots of stilt houses and alleys; the terraced field viewing platform for overhead shots of the village and terraces. Early morning light is best. ✅ Zhaishi Ancient Town: The wooden eaves of Xihe Old Street and the ancient stone bridge are great for photos. ✅ Dayuan Miao Village: A high vantage point in the village for an overlook of the entire Miao architectural complex. ❌ Travel tips: The mountain roads have many curves, so drive slowly. Many houses in the ancient villages are private residences; do not enter them casually. There are no convenience stores on the canyon hiking trails, so bring your own drinking water and snacks. There are many mosquitoes in the mountains, so be sure to pack mosquito repellent. 🍜 Must-try food & local favorites ▪️ Blood duck: A Suining signature dish, fresh, spicy, and flavorful. Dekang Family Restaurant is popular with locals and tastes authentic. ▪️ Miao and Dong oil tea: Made with puffed rice, tea leaves, and peanuts. It's savory, fragrant, and warming. You can find it at street stalls and guesthouses. ▪️ Smoked bacon and stir-fried bracken cake with bacon: Smoked over firewood in the mountains, it's incredibly fragrant. ▪️ Sour soup fish: Made with fermented sour soup from old jars, the fish is tender. The Lao Tongjia Sour Soup Restaurant at the entrance of Zhaishi Ancient Town is a long-standing, high-value spot. ▪️ For breakfast, choose the Laomo Rice Noodle Shop in the county town. Their handmade noodles with beef brisket or pig's trotters are satisfying and cost around 10 yuan. ▪️ Snacks: Freshly grilled sticky rice cakes and black rice can be bought at street stalls. 🚗 Transportation | 🏨 Accommodation | 👗 What to wear Transportation Driving is preferred. Search for the navigation points directly. The mountain road conditions are decent, but drive carefully and slowly. Non-drivers: Take the high-speed train to Dongkou Station, transfer to a bus to Suining County, and then carpool to the various villages. Avoid unlicensed taxis that overcharge; book legitimate vehicles in advance. Accommodation options ▫️ Stay at a guesthouse in Shangbao Ancient Kingdom: 100–200 yuan. Experience the mountain village immersively, watch the morning mist, and enjoy simple, rustic conditions. ▫️ Stay in Suining County: More hotel options, complete dining facilities, and about a 40-minute drive to and from the scenic spots. Clothing tips There is a large temperature difference between morning and evening in the mountains, so bring a light jacket. Be sure to wear non-slip sneakers, as there are many stone paths and forest boardwalks. Light-colored clothing looks better in photos. Don't forget sunscreen. ✨ Practical tips 1. Most ancient village attractions are free, and costs are low. You can enjoy a 2-day trip for a few hundred yuan per person. 2. The best time to visit is from April–October. Spring and summer are lush and green, and autumn features golden terraced fields. The scenery is stunning. 3. Respect local ethnic customs and greet people politely when entering villages. 4. Mobile signal in some mountain areas is weak; download offline maps in advance.

Traveling through the mountains of southwest Hunan, every mountain, valley, village, and stream is a landscape painting unique to Shaoyang. Take this 4-day, 4-county road trip to discover the lesser-known side of this land. Stop 1: Xinshao The Baishuidong Scenic Area stretches for miles, with towering peaks, waterfalls, and springs. The cliffs and ancient karst cave wonders are captivating. Deep in the mountains, the Baiyun Rock features antique architecture built against the cliff face. Arriving at the Zijiang Small Three Gorges, the green mountains on both banks reflect in the clear water and traditional houses, as if you have stepped into a painting. After dark, the Zijiang Pier comes alive with illuminated ancient-style buildings and riverside walkways, where the light beams of the Lingxi Tower blend with the city's vibrant atmosphere. A wonderful nightlife is just beginning. The next morning, we arrived at Qingshui Village. The forest coverage here exceeds 90%. The mountain springs in the village are crisp and sweet, and there are many long-lived elders here. Xinshao also has the Datong Blessed Land, hidden among the lakes and mountains. Stop 2: Longhui The Huayao Ancient Village on Huxing Mountain blends forests with stilt houses. The annual Huayao Taoliaogui festival is as lively as the Lunar New Year. Immerse yourself in the singing and dancing, drink a bowl of blocking-the-door wine in the ancient village, and catch a performance at the grand theater before leaving, feeling completely satisfied. Continuing on, we arrived at the third stop: Chengbu. Clouds lightly shroud the Nanshan Pasture, where windmills and plants sway in the breeze. Go horseback riding on the mountain or take a stroll by the lake; the scenery is moving everywhere you look. On the way down the mountain, we passed through Taolin Miao Village, where simple stilt houses are arranged along the mountain, and a stream flows slowly through the village, full of the authentic atmosphere of the Miao region. After nightfall, watch "The Moon is Round by the Wushui River." The naked-eye 3D cliff light show, combined with Miao songs and dances, weaves together stories of the Miao people. As the boat drifts slowly on the river, the lights on both banks reflect on the water. This night is destined to be unforgettable. The last stop of the trip is Suining. The Huayuange National Wetland Park is quiet and peaceful. Take a boat ride on the lake, where rolling green mountains and houses are reflected on the water; those who watch the scenery also become part of it. Entering the Huangsang National Nature Reserve, the Liu'e Cave Waterfall group at the end of the Quyou Valley is magnificent, with water flowing like silk and satin. Continuing along the mountain road, the Shangbao Dong Village, hidden in the mountains, was the capital of the ancient Shangbao Kingdom. The Drum Tower and Wind and Rain Bridge stand here, with traces of time everywhere. Far from the hustle and bustle, the mountains are quiet and leisurely. Finally, I must recommend the food in Shaoyang. I ate very well every day. Even just for the food, it is worth a special trip. I have personally scouted this southwest Hunan road trip route, and it is well worth planning a trip.

Walk through a rustic time tunnel | Explore the pristine Zhaishi ancient town in southwestern Xiangxi Who would have thought that deep in the mountains of Suining, Shaoyang, there lies an undeveloped ancient town like this. As the old site of Suining’s former county seat, Zhaishi ancient town still shows the polished sheen on its bluestone paths from years of wear. Without crowds of tourists or noisy shops, walking here feels like opening a yellowed thread-bound book, with every breath carrying the unique fragrance of wooden houses. 🌧️ Rainy days add even more charm Visiting on a rainy, overcast day, the raindrops hanging from the eaves form a curtain of beads, wrapping the entire old street in a misty poetic atmosphere. The damp bluestones reflect the weathered wooden walls, and occasionally villagers stroll by under oil-paper umbrellas, making it feel like stepping back a hundred years. We recommend wearing slip-resistant shoes—the rain-soaked bluestones can be slippery, but this adds to the authentic ancient vibe. 📸 Photo spots to share 1️⃣ The century-old pharmacy at the corner of Cross Street, with its faded wooden sign and carved window frames full of stories 2️⃣ The stilted buildings by the river, which look like ink paintings when shrouded in mist on rainy days 3️⃣ The old post office at the end of West Street, where the faded "People’s Post" sign on the doorframe makes for excellent cultural shots 🚶‍♂️ Walking tips · The ancient town is open all day and free to enter. The best time to experience local life is between 6 and 8 AM · Many wooden houses are still inhabited, so please keep quiet when taking photos · By the river, villagers set up small tea stalls selling wild vine tea for 2 yuan a bowl—don’t miss it This place lacks the noise of popular check-in spots but holds the warmth of centuries of history. When you want to escape the sameness of commercialized ancient towns, come to Zhaishi to experience the truest charm of Xiangxi’s heritage.

📍Huangsang protected area, Shangbao ancient kingdom, Suining, Shaoyang After seeing the crowded crowds of Zhangjiajie and Fenghuang ancient town, there is a rarely discovered ancient village deep in the mountains of southwestern Xiangxi. This is the site of the ancient Miao and Dong kingdoms, with very low popularity. Even on holidays, there are no large tour groups, and local visitors rarely come specifically. The original ecological atmosphere is well preserved. 🚗 Travel tips: No direct high-speed train yet. After arriving at Shaoyang or Suining county by high-speed train, you can only drive or carpool into the mountains. The mountain roads are quiet, accompanied by forest scenery all the way. New highlights for niche travelers 1. Natural oxygen bar with a built-in cooling effect Forest coverage exceeds 86%. The average temperature in midsummer is 25℃. The air is rich in negative oxygen ions. You don’t need to deliberately look for a summer resort; entering the village lets you escape the city heat. 2. Uncommercialized living ancient site Preserves relics like the Jinluan Hall and the General’s Platform. The slate-paved Dong village is built along the mountain and terraces. There are no mass-produced trendy shops. Daily life shows the authentic scenes of local residents. 3. Unique night view and starry sky After sunset, all visitors leave. Without strong light pollution, you can clearly see the entire Milky Way at night. The sound of streams and insects accompanies the wooden buildings, creating an atmosphere far beyond the daytime. Minimalist travel tips ▪️ Best time to visit: June–September for cool weather and green terraces; spring and autumn mornings bring mist over the village, perfect for photography ▪️ Folk customs: When visiting Dong family homes or photographing elders, ask for permission in advance

I'd take a wild guess that the place you're talking about is—Dehang Miao Village in Xiangxi! If not, it might be Shangbao Ancient Kingdom in Suining or Chang'an Camp in Chengbu. But honestly, the one that perfectly fits the labels of "Direct High-Speed Rail," "Millennium Miao Village," and "Massively Underrated" is undoubtedly Dehang! (Just hop off at Jishou East Station and it's a breezy 30-minute ride—no hassle at all.) So, just how underrated is Dehang? Compared to the touristy Fenghuang Ancient Town, you won't find ridiculous ticket prices ripping you off or tacky photo-shoot shops crowding every corner. It's also not like Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village with its over-the-top, blinged-out homestay light shows. What Dehang preserves is the most authentic, breathing slice of Miao life. In the mornings, you'll see grannies humming folk tunes while washing clothes by the stream. By dusk, the aroma of chimney smoke mixed with sour fish and smoked cured meat will literally make your mouth water. And at night? The Milky Way is genuinely visible to the naked eye—every casual snap looks straight out of a wallpaper! ✨ 🚄 The HSR Itinerary is Super Simple: Day 1: Arrive at Jishou East Station, take a 30-minute ride to Dehang Miao Village, and check straight into a riverside stilt house. At night, you absolutely can't miss the breathtaking live performance, *Mountain Wind and Drum Rhythm*. Day 2: Challenge the Liusha Waterfall (a 216-meter drop, making it one of the highest in the country!). In the afternoon, hike up to Wentian Platform for jaw-dropping cliff views—it's the exact spot that inspired Qu Yuan’s famous poem *Heavenly Questions*. It's unreal! Day 3: Take a workshop to learn traditional Miao silver-smithing or batik dyeing to experience authentic ethnic crafts. Finally, stuff yourself with some delicious sour soup fish, pack your bags, and head home. 🌟 TOP 3 Reasons to Go ASAP: 1. Unbeatable Value — Tickets are less than half the price of Fenghuang, and you can score a room with a killer view for just over 100 RMB per person. The cost-performance is insane. 2. Truly Peaceful — Even during the summer holidays, you won't be rubbing shoulders with crowds in the main scenic area. The tranquility will honestly make you question reality. 3. Super Accessible — Jishou East Station has dozens of high-speed trains running daily. It's only 1.5 hours from Changsha and just 4 hours from Guangzhou. So convenient! 📸 Photo Spot Tips: A wide-angle full-body shot at Liusha Waterfall, the water reflections of the stilt houses, and the vibrant night lights of the *Mountain Wind and Drum Rhythm* show. Every casual snap will easily blow up your feed! 🕓 Dehang Miao Village Opening Hours: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM (Year-round) 📍 Address: Dehang Miao Village, Jishou City, Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture Budget Reference: Tickets: ~60 RMB/person Accommodation: 100-200 RMB/night/person Live Performance: *Mountain Wind and Drum Rhythm* from 120 RMB/person Food: ~50 RMB/person is enough for an epic feast To sum it up, if Dehang is what you had in mind, it's a huge "GO FOR IT!" If not, drop the exact name in the comments, and I'll whip up a new guide ASAP! ~ A niche Miao village, insane value for money, stress-free transport, and a real-life "Xanadu"—Dehang is seriously flying under the radar. Girls, pack your bags and go! 🌿💚

Hunan’s “furnace” heat combined with summer crowds really makes you want to escape. I’ve picked four truly less crowded, cool, and unique hideaways within the province, perfect for a spontaneous getaway. 1. Chenzhou · Guidong (Hunan’s “Little Tibet”) The county with the highest altitude in Hunan. The average summer temperature is 23℃, a natural air-conditioned city where you really don’t need AC. · Itinerary: 2–3 days. Day 1: arrive and visit Santai Mountain Forest Park to see ancient trees thousands of years old. Day 2: go to Wanyang Mountain Acacia Grassland, where the alpine meadow and wind turbines are spectacular. You can camp and stargaze. Day 3: wake up early to see the sea of clouds before heading back. · Transportation: high-speed train to “Chenzhou West,” then rent a car and drive about 2.5 hours; or take a bus directly to Guidong. · Tips: big temperature difference between morning and night, bring a light jacket; local yellow peaches and Linglong tea are in season. 2. Shaoyang · Suining (filming location of “The Mountain, the Man, and the Dog”) Forest coverage over 76%, known as the “magical oasis.” Summer here is flowing greenery and streams. · Itinerary: 3 days. Day 1: arrive at Huangsang Ecotourism Area, spend the afternoon at Liue’erdong Waterfall. Day 2: hike to Shangbao Ancient Kingdom (Miao Kingdom ruins), explore winding valleys shaded by trees. Day 3: visit Dayuan Ancient Miao Village (movie filming site) before returning. · Transportation: high-speed train to “Huaihua South” or “Shaoyang.” Renting a car to drive into the mountains (about 2 hours) is recommended. · Tips: bring creek shoes to play in the water anytime; local cured meat and stuffed chili peppers are very appetizing. 3. Yueyang · Pingjiang (wild fun with creek trekking and glass rafting) Surrounded by Lianyun Mountain and Fushou Mountain, it’s the backyard garden of Changsha and much less crowded than Liuyang. · Itinerary: 2 days. Day 1: morning at Tuolong Gorge (known as the world’s most thrilling glass rafting), afternoon at Chunxi Town, hopping across stones in the stream. Day 2: visit Fushou Mountain to see Baishui Lake and a 100-meter waterfall, then return in the afternoon. · Transportation: high-speed train to “Yueyang East,” about 1.5 hours by car; or drive directly from Changsha (about 1.5 hours). · Tips: waterproof phone case is a must for rafting, wear quick-dry clothes; Pingjiang dried tofu is a must-buy specialty. 4. Huaihua · Xupu (Yao ethnic fairyland through Chuan Yan Mountain) Northern foot of Xuefeng Mountain, over 800 meters altitude, shrouded in mist, recommended by Lonely Planet. · Itinerary: 3 days. Day 1: stay at Yanejie Ancient Village (mountain top guesthouse), watch the sunset and sea of clouds. Day 2: visit Chuan Yan Mountain Forest Park, walk the Longfeng glass viewing platform, soak in the infinity alpine pool at Fengxiang Yao Village (mountain spring water is very cool). Day 3: experience Huayao embroidery, then return in the afternoon. · Transportation: high-speed train directly to “Xupu South.” Contact the guesthouse in advance for pick-up and drop-off (mountain roads are dangerous, not recommended for new drivers). · Tips: must try Yao ethnic stewed chicken and alpine radish; it’s windy in the mountains, remember to bring a windbreaker. · -- Recommended route: If you have 5 days, try the Xiangxi loop: Xupu (2 days) → Suining (2 days) → return. Experience both alpine and Miao ethnic cultures in one trip. Final reminder: these are all mountainous areas with frequent afternoon showers, so bring rain gear; and “less crowded” is relative to popular spots, weekend accommodations are still tight, so be sure to book lodging before you go. Which of these places excites you the most? If you want specific accommodation recommendations or want to know if they’re suitable for elderly or children, just let me know anytime. 😊

If you don’t want to squeeze into Zhangjiajie or Fenghuang Ancient Town, be sure to save this list of Hunan’s lesser-known spots! Fewer people, beautiful scenery, almost no commercialization, and mostly free admission—perfect for those who want to quietly enjoy mountains, rivers, and ancient villages. 🌿 Suining | Shangbao ancient kingdom A hidden ancient Miao kingdom deep in the mountains, with wooden houses, terraced fields, and misty clouds. Very few tourists, no crowded shops, walking through the village feels like authentic Miao village life. Hiking to see the sea of clouds is perfect for photos. 💦 Pingjiang | Chunxi town A cool canyon in the Lianyun Mountains, following a clear stream with waterfalls and dense forest along the way. Free admission, avoid the crowds of rafting, and enjoy creek trekking and water play in summer to beat the heat. 🏯 Jiangyong | Goulan Yao village A castle-like thousand-year-old Yao village with cobblestone alleys and stilted buildings reflected in the ponds. Local elders still wear traditional Yao clothing in daily life. In the early morning mist, the atmosphere is truly immersive. 🚣 Taoyuan | Yiwang Creek Known as Hunan’s Little Guilin, with clear water, green bamboo, and lush mountains. Ride a bamboo raft drifting on the creek, surrounded by stunning scenery. No noisy tour groups, just peaceful mountain and water views, plus camping and fishing by the shore. 🏡 Huitong | Gaoyi ancient village A 600-year-old Ming and Qing dynasty village with clusters of old wooden houses, well-preserved ancient alleys, wells, and theaters. In the evening, smoke curls from cooking fires. Strolling slowly through the village is perfect for capturing cultural film photos. Long accustomed to tackling tasks alone, our individual execution skills have been continually honed, yet it's easy to fall into a lone-wolf mindset; team communication becomes somewhat stiff, lacking a natural, effortless collaborative chemistry. For this team-building retreat, we ventured into Dayuan Miao Village at the eastern foot of the Xuefeng Mountains. We wandered through the ancient settlements of Yinzi houses—a seamless blend of Miao and Han cultures—refining our team spirit through mutual support and companionship. Founded in the Song Dynasty, Dayuan Miao Village has long been a shared home for Miao and Han ancestors. Dozens of Yinzi houses with traditional fire-seal walls are layered together, interlaced with crisscrossing bluestone mountain paths. In ancient times, this was a vital mountain outpost connecting Suining with eastern Guizhou, perfectly preserving integrated folk traditions such as Miao singing, dancing, and weaving. Tucked away deep in the mountain valleys, far from the tourist crowds, the Chishui Stream flows gently through the village, bringing with it the pristine, wild essence of southwestern Hunan. We explored the ancient village in small groups, dividing tasks autonomously and collaborating flexibly. Some navigated the labyrinth of alleyways, some captured details of the ancient architecture and joyful moments of the team, while others managed our walking pace. Faced with numerous forks in the alleys, we occasionally lost our way. Instead of getting anxious or complaining, everyone gathered around to share clues, make collective decisions, and quickly adjust our route. Whenever we encountered uneven thresholds or narrow passages, we extended a helping hand and politely let others pass first. Chatting along the way, we shed our formal office communication styles, making our interactions increasingly natural and smooth. This journey awakened us to a profound truth: working solo ultimately has its limits. Only by embracing inclusivity, complementing each other's strengths, and communicating effectively can a team unleash its true power. After this bonding experience, our team's synergy has reached new heights. Whatever challenges lie ahead, we are ready to lift each other up, break through obstacles as one, and journey together toward the distant mountains and seas.

Sticking to familiar routines for too long makes our mindsets increasingly rigid. We get used to our comfort zones, shying away from new methods and challenges. As a result, the team's overall vibe settles into a stagnant monotony, lacking the dynamic spark of breakthrough and innovation. To break out of this box, we set off for the Shangbao Dong Village in Suining. Amidst the ruins of the ancient Shangbao Kingdom, we ventured into the unknown to forge the courage to push our limits. Dating back to the Ming Dynasty, Shangbao Dong Village was once the heart of the Miao King's regime. Today, its traditional wooden Dong houses—built entirely with mortise and tenon joints—cascade beautifully down the terraced hillsides. The foundations of the ancient imperial palace and the old flagstone paths remain intact, echoing a blend of ethnic warfare history and traditional Dong farming culture. Nestled in the mountains and surrounded by lush terraces, the village remains wonderfully rustic and virtually untouched by tourist crowds. We ditched the typical sightseeing routes to carve our own path through the village's mountain trails and field tracks. Some of the mountain paths were rugged and slippery, making a few of us hesitant at first. But teammates quickly rallied, cheering each other on, leading the way, watching our backs, and lending a helping hand. When faced with unfamiliar crossroads, we didn't just fall back on our old ways of thinking. Instead, everyone eagerly pitched different ideas, brainstorming and pivoting on the fly. With the mountain breeze on our faces and a deep sense of ancient charm all around, we let go of our mental boundaries during this leap into the unknown, stumbling upon plenty of breathtaking, unexpected views. This trip was a powerful reminder: whether hitting the road or grinding at work, letting fear take the wheel gets you nowhere. Only by daring to try and pulling together can we clear the hurdles in our way. Moving forward, we're ready to shake off the chains of playing it safe, boldly innovate, fuel our team's vitality, and stride confidently toward a much broader horizon.

🌿 Suining · Huangsang National Nature Reserve 💰 Budget reference: 2–3 days, 3 people, CNY 400–650 per person (Huangsangping Township B&B CNY 200–500/night, spring water chicken soup + stir-fried fern with cured meat CNY 50–80 per person, Xiongshi River Grand Canyon free, Liue Cave Waterfall free admission, Huangsang Rafting CNY 88/person, 3h drive from Changsha/3h drive from Shaoyang city) 🎯 Recommended attractions · Xiongshi River Grand Canyon: Hundreds of meters vertical drop + natural swimming pool with water temperature of 18℃. Jumping in instantly refreshes you, more therapeutic than any trendy photo spot. · Liue Cave Waterfall: 40-meter drop, "white silk on a green carpet." Walk through the forest to avoid the sun. · Shangbao Ancient Kingdom: 500 mu of terraced fields surrounding Dong ethnic wooden houses, "Hunan's version of Tang'an" but without the crowds. Market days (check local announcements) are the liveliest. · Huangsang Rafting: CNY 88 per person for a bamboo raft, not thrilling. A leisurely stream drift, water temperature 20℃, cool to the wrist when you put your hand in. ✨ Reasons for recommendation Huangsang is the "wildest + coolest" of the four—average summer temperature 21℃, negative oxygen ions 160,000/cm³ (300 times that of cities), and a forest coverage rate of 78%, making it one of "China's most beautiful subtropical forests." B&B rooms don't have air conditioning because it's not needed; you even need a thin quilt at night. This is heavenly data for the "furnace" regions of central and southern Hunan in July and August. Reminder: Mobile signal is spotty in Huangsang mountainous areas, download offline maps in advance; B&B booking rates tripled last year during summer, book two weeks in advance; the CNY 88 rafting is a bamboo raft, not rapids, suitable for kids. · ----- 🌸 Longhui · Huxingshan-Huayao Scenic Area 💰 Budget reference: 2–3 days, 3 people, CNY 300–500 per person (Chongmudang/Huxingshan Township B&B CNY 150–300/night, cured meat + pig blood sausage + rice wine CNY 40 per person, Wangxi Waterfall about CNY 40, no main entrance fee for the entire area! Only single-point charges, high-speed rail to Longhui Station + 2h bus ride into the mountains) 🎯 Recommended attractions · Wangxi Waterfall Group: Five consecutive waterfalls, with Longguojiang as the main waterfall. The canyon stream tracing water temperature is 20℃. It's easier to enter from the exit and walk down. There are sections suitable for kids to play in the water. · Chongmudang Ancient Village: "China's First Huayao Village," with ancient fir trees (1,800 years old) + stilt houses + Huayao embroidery (national intangible cultural heritage). Experience the welcoming wine and long table banquet. · Datou Stone Waterfall: A giant granite cliff, thousands of meters wide and hundreds of meters high, a "solidified stone waterfall." Impressive from an aerial view, free. · Yunshang Terraces (Baishuidong/Wanguanchong): Water-filled mirror-like fields in May–June, golden in September–October. In July–August, they are emerald green + a summer retreat. The morning mist is stunning. ✨ Reasons for recommendation Huxingshan offers the best value for money among the four—no main entrance fee for the entire area. Wangxi is CNY 40, while Chongmudang/Datou Stone Waterfall/terraces are all free. The Xuefeng Mountain plateau has an average temperature of 22℃, where "clouds are at your feet, and you are above the clouds." Huayao culture is an added value, with embroidery + folk songs + wedding customs, much more authentic than commercialized Miao villages. Longhui's "three spicy dishes" + pig blood sausage + cured meat are all excellent with rice. Reminder: It's easier to enter Wangxi from the exit and walk down; don't climb hard from the entrance; bring a light jacket for the large temperature difference between morning and evening in the mountains; respect Huayao customs, ask grandmas for permission before taking photos. · ----- 🏔️ Dongkou · Luoxi National Forest Park ("Southern Little Tibet") 💰 Budget reference: 2–3 days, 3 people, CNY 350–550 per person (Luoxi Yao Township B&B CNY 150–280/night, Yao family local dishes + Gongxi River fish CNY 45 per person, park free admission, rafting extra about CNY 120–150, 2.5h drive from Huaihua/Shaoyang into the mountains) 🎯 Recommended attractions · Gongxi River Grand Canyon + Longtou Sandiao Waterfall Group: In the heart of Xuefeng Mountain, 94% forest coverage, average altitude 1,200m, known as "Southern Little Tibet," with waterfalls connecting waterfalls. · Luoxi Ecological Rafting: Rubber boats + battling rapids + navigating shoals, "the thrill of a roller coaster + the joy of playing in water." A must-do in summer. · Baoyao Village Ancient Village: Ancient Yao village + Red Army Bridge, a leisurely stroll. ✨ Reasons for recommendation Luoxi is the most "underestimated" of the four—located in the western part of Dongkou County, in the heart of Xuefeng Mountain, with an average altitude of 1,200m, slightly higher than Huangsang. With 94% forest coverage + crisscrossing streams and rivers, it's a gem even many Shaoyang locals might not fully know about. It's wilder than Huangsang, cooler than Huxingshan, and closer to Huaihua than Yunshan. Rafting is its killer feature; for rubber boats, choose the gentle section if you have kids (ask the owner), the rapids section is for the brave. Reminder: The last section of the mountain road into Luoxi has many curves, bring motion sickness medicine; bring a change of clothes + a waterproof bag for rafting, don't wear flip-flops (they might get washed away). · ----- 🏯 Wugang · Yunshan National Forest Park ("Chunan Scenic Spot" 69th Blessed Land) 💰 Budget reference: 2 days, 1 night, 3 people, CNY 350–600 per person (B&B at the foot of Yunshan CNY 200–400/night, Wugang braised dishes + blood duck CNY 50 per person, admission ticket CNY 42/person, children/seniors CNY 22.5, mountain top camping + night climbing launched in July) 🎯 Recommended attractions · Shengli Temple + Luhou Palace: Taoism and Buddhism coexist. The "69th Blessed Land" where Luhou and Ersheng of the Qin Dynasty collected herbs and refined elixirs. Shengli Temple was the center of Buddhism in southwestern Hunan during the Song Dynasty, and incense still burns there today. · Banshanchong Waterfall Group + Yipu Feitao: Play in the forest streams, cool to the touch when you step barefoot into the spring. · Zixiaofeng Baoding: 1,372.5m, the best spot to view the sea of clouds. The highest probability of reaching the summit is between 6–8 AM. · Mountain top camping (opened during Dragon Boat Festival) + new night climbing in July: Check into a starry sky campsite with just your bags, lie down and watch the Milky Way + sea of clouds sunrise. Cable car is also being promoted after Mango Culture and Tourism moved in. ✨ Reasons for recommendation Yunshan is the most "cultural + relaxing" of the four—1,372m, average summer temperature 23.2℃. Its reputation as "Chunan Scenic Spot" is older than Moganshan, but it has only one-tenth of Moganshan's crowds. Shengli Temple + Luhou Palace offer dual cultivation of Taoism and Buddhism, with playing in Banshanchong, the sea of clouds at Zixiaofeng, and mountain top camping all in one package. Night climbing launched in July, suitable for young people; for seniors, the gentle sections of Banshanchong + Shengli Temple are enough. Wugang's braised tofu + braised pig ears + blood duck are signature dishes of southwestern Hunan, and old shops on Xizhi Street are cheaper than those in the scenic area. Reminder: Yunshan camping is best in July during the Milky Way season, book in advance on the "Yunshan Tourism Resort" official WeChat account; bring a headlamp + light jacket for night climbing, it's about 14℃ on the mountain top in the early morning. · ----- ⚠️ Four options to choose from + general tips for Shaoyang trip · For 21℃ + wild + waterfall swimming pool → Suining Huangsang (coolest and wildest, 3h from Changsha) · For 0 main entrance fee + Huayao intangible cultural heritage → Longhui Huxingshan (ultimate value for money) · For Xuefeng Mountain heartland + rafting → Dongkou Luoxi ("Southern Little Tibet") · For Taoist and Buddhist blessed land + new mountain top camping → Wugang Yunshan (most relaxing and cultural) General tip for avoiding summer heat in Shaoyang: The four spots are spread across four different counties, don't try to visit two in one day. It's best to stay one night in Huangsang + Suining County, one night in Huxingshan + Longhui, one night in Luoxi + Dongkou, and one night in Yunshan + Wugang, each as a 2-day trip. The reason not to join a tour group for your first visit is this—a "Shaoyang Panorama X-day" tour will just cram Langshan/Nanshan/other famous spots together, rushing through, and places like Huangsang and Luoxi, which require a slow stay, won't be included in the itinerary. Take the high-speed rail to Shaoyang Station/Longhui Station/Dongkou Station, then self-drive or carpool locally for the most freedom 🌿

Mountains and rivers hide secret places, ancient charm intoxicates Suining. Yesterday, I saw a video in the group chat about the 48 Girls Festival in Suining, Shaoyang. I remembered a friend whose hometown is Suining, and I once visited with my family. Passing by the Dayuan Ancient Miao Village back then, we happened to catch the Miao tradition of door-blocking wine and got delightfully drunk. This early summer trip to Suining, nothing is more beautiful than the 48 Girls Festival; hidden in the secret realm of southwestern Hunan, the Dayuan Ancient Miao Village awaits you to unlock an authentic Miao ethnic journey with its millennium-old customs. This is the core venue of the national intangible cultural heritage "48 Girls Festival" and also a filming location for the show "Where Are We Going, Dad?" Among the blue bricks and black tiles, the village is full of the warmth of daily life and poetic charm accumulated over the years. Dayuan Ancient Miao Village was founded during the Northern Song Dynasty, over a thousand years ago. More than 300 Ming and Qing dynasty sunken houses are built along the mountain in a staggered layout, with tall fireproof walls and a network of copper drum stone alleys, resembling a story-filled Bagua maze. On the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, "the fragrance of black rice fills the air, and the girls return home." This exclusive Miao family grand event fills the ancient village with lively atmosphere. Miao girls dressed in splendid costumes with jingling silver ornaments come singing and dancing; the village sets up a communal feast, and the aroma of glossy black rice is irresistible, offering a taste of authentic Miao flavors. During the festival, the ancient village is an immersive folk feast everywhere. The door-blocking wine is warm and mellow, the lusheng pipes play melodiously, the Nuo opera enacts thousand-year-old legends, and the grass dragons dance joyfully to celebrate the festival; people of all ages gather in the square to play wooden leaves, sing mountain songs in call-and-response, and perform Miao dances, with songs and laughter echoing around the green mountains and clear waters. Strolling through the village, visit the "Sizhitang" to feel the Yang ancestors' family tradition of "clean and honest heritage"; watch children wearing cute dog-head hats playing in the ancient alleys, each scene a healing pastoral painting. If you have time on the weekend, escape the hustle and bustle and head to Suining. In Dayuan Ancient Miao Village, listen to the thousand-year-old buildings telling their stories, encounter ethnic customs at the Girls Festival, savor a bite of sweet black rice that melts in your heart, and get intoxicated by mountain songs in the Miao homeland. This early summer, entrust your steps to Suining and collect unforgettable memories of the Miao land in this secret place where nature and culture intertwine. If you have time, let's meet at the Suining 48 Girls Festival, the most beautiful Dayuan Ancient Miao Village, waiting for you to join a millennium Miao ethnic rendezvous!
