Shkoder travel guide and discussion

Often compared - somewhat flatteringly - to Venice (a prominent local architect studied there and brought the style home with him) Shkoder has some of La Serenissima’s air of elegiac decay, but tempered by a lively cafe culture in tree-lined, sun-dappled streets twinkling with the chiming of caged goldfinches. Well-fed stray dogs set the tone, sprawling relaxed, almost carpet-like on bar terraces; dapper elderly gents potter by on their bicycles: it’s easy enough to join them - you can hire a bike for €5 and ride along the riverside to Rozafa castle. While having Illyrian roots, much of the visible, well-preserved walls and cisterns of the castle are of 15th century Venetian design and rewards visitors with some satisfying rambling of its walls and outstanding views across the town and surrounding countryside. Entrance fee 400Lek/4 euros, plus an additional 2€ fee if you want to visit the museum. Complete your visit by riding down the edge of Shkoder lake to waterside Shiroka (or take a taxi from the town centre for 800-1000 lek). #shkodër #albania #rozafacastle

Shala River It has a length of 37 km from the source at the top of Radohina to Dri, it springs at the source of Shtraza at the top of the village Theth, at the foot of the top of Radohina, from where it descends down through the valley of Shala, from Thethi, Ndërlysa and Musha , from Breg-Lumi to Porta e Shalës (Gorge of Rrshqëm), through Lotaj and in the valley of Shoshi, while its discharge goes to Lesniqe in Dri (today Lake Koman). In the river Shala there is a rare beauty, where it is difficult to say only in words. The Shala River in the years of democracy has become a tourist destination for both foreigners and locals, from where many visitors describe it as the pearl of the beauties of Koman and Albania. Shala’s River is a touristic destination the most beautiful pearl of Koman’s lake, as Thailand of Albania. The hazy color of water and it’s crystal clean water is characteristic of this river. The steep huge rocks, worn by trees and green plants, seem to rise to the sky to protect this beauty that so generously mother nature has offered to our eyes and hearts. What the Shala’s River offers can not be described in words, therefore Komani Lake, for all you who want to visit this wonderful place has made available, every day, small boats. #tripaway

Known affectionately by locals as the Pjaca, Rruga Kolë Idromeno is a stunning, pedestrian-only boulevard that serves as the vibrant cultural and social spine of Shkodër. Designed in the late 19th century by the city's celebrated multi-talented artist and architect Kolë Idromeno, this elegant promenade brings a distinct Italianate flair to northern Albania, paved with striking decorative stones and lined with beautifully restored Venetian-style brick facades, pastel-colored buildings, and historic romantic lampposts. There is currently no ‘bus-station’ as such in Shkodër. Instead, buses out of town depart from the central roundabout by The Red Bricks Hotel / Hotel Rozafa. I had been wondering why our hotel manager had advised us to head there early. I initially assumed that buses only left in the morning and therefore we would be stranded if we left later than that, but at breakfast he added ‘I would run over there right now, because the traffic will be bad’. It was a fair warning: I’m writing this passage on the minibus as it waits at the border (see photo) and the queue, while not overlong, is only inching forward. Our bus driver says this is because the border guards work ‘slowly-slowly’. Apparently visa-free border crossing between Albania and Montenegro was only introduced in 2007 - after the narrow pot-holed road that served the border during communism was upgraded with the advent of democracy. Only the road’s speed has improved, however. The glacial checking of passports remains unchanged. Having now arrived at Ulcinj I think the impression that will stay with me from this journey was that it felt like how I imagine travelling must have been during the 1990s and early 2000s: relying upon locals rather than the internet for information and advice, and - the ice thus broken - getting an inkling of the flow and change of local history and opinions from our conversations with the driver. We were the only group in the minibus, and we felt carefully looked after from start to finish- upon arrival at Ulcinj bus station our driver and his employer gave us instructions on how to make the (quite long) walk from the bus station to the historic centre, and bade us what felt like a genuinely affectionate farewell. Key tips: · Yes, head to the road outside Hotel Rozafa early. You will need time to ask the bus drivers there exactly which spot the Ulcinj bus departs from. (For English speakers, the pronunciation is - approximately - ‘Ool-chin-yeh’). · The local bus drivers are really friendly, even if you aren’t planning to use their company or route. It’s worth noting, though, that one of the taxi drivers touting for fares told us ‘no bus for Ulcinj. I’ll take you there - €20 each, same as bus’. Now, it’s perfectly possible that some of these details are befuddled in translation, but there definitely IS a (mini)bus, and the fare is €7 each. This was the one, single occasion that anyone we met in Albania was less than helpful. · Our bus departed at 09:50 (on a Thursday), but there didn’t seem to be a published schedule as such, so there really is no substitute for heading to the Red Brick Hotel roundabout (https://maps.app.goo.gl/Uup2w58uorGJwQ9e6?g_st=iw ) and just asking people. #shkodër #travel2026 #couplestrip #realtravel #ulcinj

Perched at the edge of the massive Lake Shkodër and framed by the dramatic, jagged peaks of the Albanian Alps, Shkodër is one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited cities and the undeniable cultural capital of Albania’s north. This deeply artistic and cycling-friendly city gracefully blends centuries of Illyrian, Roman, Venetian, and Ottoman history, welcoming travelers with a uniquely relaxed Italianate charm, a proudly diverse religious heritage, and a thriving arts scene. Your exploration must begin at the legendary Rozafa Castle, an imposing Illyrian fortress that sits high upon a rocky hill southwest of the city center. Walking through its ancient stone gates rewards you with a staggering panoramic vista over the confluence of three rushing rivers—the Drin, Buna, and Kir—merging before spilling into the vast, shimmering expanse of Lake Shkodër. Down in the flat city center, the heart of Shkodër’s social life beats along the Kole Idromeno Promenade (known locally as the Pjaca). This beautiful, pedestrian-only boulevard is lined with elegant 19th-century Venetian-style brick facades, pastel-colored buildings, and a dense concentration of lively open-air cafes where locals spend hours sipping espresso under the shade of leafy trees. Along this historic stretch, you can step into the world-class Marubi National Museum of Photography to browse a priceless archive capturing 150 years of Albanian life, or admire the city's harmonious spirit at the grand Ebu Beker Mosque and the nearby Catholic St. Stephen’s Cathedral. To cap off a perfect day, follow the local tradition: rent a bicycle and pedal along the scenic waterfront path down to Shirokë, a sleepy, charming fishing village tucked right against the lake's edge. Here, you can sit at a rustic waterside terrace, order a plate of traditional baked carp (tavë krapi), and watch a spectacular Balkan sunset dip directly behind the surrounding montane horizon. #travel #travel2026 #albania #shkodër

Theth is a small village located in Theth National Park in the Albanian Alps, Albania. It is a popular destination for hikers due to its stunning natural beauty and several famous landmarks. For this trip, we rented a car and drove from North Macedonia, stopping for a night in Shkoder to stock up on supplies. Since we arrived before the tourist season, we wanted to be prepared and also take some time to rest after our long flight from Thailand. We visited in early April, when the mountains were still covered in snow. This included the SH21 road leading to the park, which is narrow and winding, requiring very careful driving. The higher we climbed toward the park, the deeper the snow became. We felt uneasy when we saw the car ahead of us stop and prepare to turn back, but we kept going. Eventually, we saw a car coming down and flagged them down to ask about the road conditions. The driver told us it was passable if we drove slowly and with extreme caution. I’m so glad we didn’t give up and turn back, because the view of the snow-covered road and trees was truly magnificent. As I mentioned, we arrived before the peak season, so many accommodations were not yet open. We rang bells at several places, but no one was home. We kept searching and found some places that were open but were undergoing renovations after the winter. We finally found a place to stay further inside, and there was already a group of tourists there, which was great so we wouldn't feel lonely. After dropping off our luggage, it was time to explore. By then it was late afternoon. We had originally planned to hike to the Blue Eye, a natural pool with incredibly clear water, but it required a one-hour hike up and another hour back. Worried we wouldn’t make it before dark, we decided to skip it. Instead, we walked to The Church of Theth. Built in 1892, this historic church is an important cultural symbol of the region. It is constructed from local stone and remains in use today. There is also the Theth trail, a mountain hike across the Valbona Pass. It’s a must for hikers, but unfortunately, we missed it due to lack of time. I really hope we can return to this place again.

Many people stay in Skadar, Albania, as a stopover before hiking the famous Cursed Mountain from Valbona or Tes. (Many hotels and hostels offer luggage storage for an additional fee.) The last photo shows a large stray dog, common in Albania. 🐶 (lol) Please visit for a change of scenery. ✨

Shkoder is a large lake located in the north of Albania, bordering Montenegro and Albania. In ancient times, it was a small town with a castle and a market. Until the middle of the third century, it was the capital of the original kingdom of the Illyrian tribe the Ardians. Shkoder was also the capital of the Kingdom of Gentius. After this, Shkoder was ruled by the Roman Empire and became an important trade and military city. Rome colonized the city. Although this lake is not as big as the lakes in major European countries, it is simpler and quieter. It makes people feel more amazed. #Overseas Travel #Albania #Shkodra #Overseas Travel
