Before you even reach the top of the dam, you hear the water. The wind pushes from upstream, carrying a cool mist that brushes against your face and presses your clothes against your legs. From the dam, you can see the river flowing over the stone surface, spreading out like a thin white curtain, while the rest of the water turns and flows into the downstream channel. This sight is the essence of Daicun Dam. Daicun Dam is in Dongping County, Tai'an City, Shandong, spanning the lower reaches of the Dawen River. It was built in the 9th year of the Yongle reign of the Ming Dynasty, which is 1411, making it over 600 years old today. At that time, the Shandong section of the Grand Canal lacked water, and grain transport ships could not move. Minister of Works Song Li presided over the project, adopting the idea of Bai Ying, an elder from Wenshang, to dam the Dawen River here and divert the water to Nanwang to replenish the canal. This method was called "diverting the Wen to aid the canal." Later, the Nanwang water diversion split the water, with one stream going north and one south, stabilizing the canal's water level. The grain transport of the Ming and Qing dynasties relied on this link. The dam is not built from a single block of stone. The section facing the water is built with stone, followed by a levee made of a traditional mixture of lime, sand, and clay, making one side hard and the other resilient, each doing its own job. It has been renovated several times over the centuries; a restoration monument was erected in 2005. In 2014, the Grand Canal was listed as a World Heritage site, and Daicun Dam is one of its heritage points. In 2025, it was included in the first list of Yellow River water conservancy heritage sites. Carp and crucian carp are prepared simply, and the soup is fresh. Dongping fermented fish and Dongping porridge are local snacks; the fish bones are tender, and the porridge is thick—perfect for breakfast or dinner. Restaurants by the lake charge by weight, so ask clearly before ordering to avoid leftovers. Breakfast stalls in the county town open early; a bowl of porridge and a pancake cost just a few yuan. For overnight stays, choose the county town; there are plenty of hotels and inns that are clean and reasonably priced. There are almost no accommodations near the dam area, which is quiet at night. How to get there: Driving is convenient. Take the expressway from Jinan or Tai'an to Dongping, then drive toward the lower reaches of the Dawen River. Search for "Daicun Dam" on your navigation app. The last section is a country road; it is not narrow, but be careful when passing other cars. Public transport is infrequent, so if you are not driving, go to Dongping County first and then transfer. A few things to clarify before you go so you do not make a wasted trip. Water volume is the top priority: during the flood season, the water is high, and the dam might be temporarily closed to visitors. During the dry season, the water is low, the dam is quiet, and you will not see the white curtain. Come when the water level is moderate to see it in action. Do not get too close to the water when it is rising; the Dawen River can rise suddenly, and the wet stones are slippery. It is windier on the dam than in the city, so bring a windbreaker in spring and autumn, and hold onto your hat. There are not many places to eat around the dam area, so it is better to bring water and snacks if you are in a group. Ticket prices and guide fees fluctuate slightly by season, so just have a rough idea before you come and ask for the current rates when you arrive. Most of the cost for this trip will be transportation; the dam area itself does not cost much. You can combine it with Dongping Lake for a 1-day trip: see the dam in the morning, the lake in the afternoon, and have a meal in the county town in between. I recommend visiting the Italian Style Town in the morning when it's less crowded, so you can stand freely around the columns at Marco Polo Square. ⚠️ Don't eat Goubuli in the tourist area; it's expensive and mediocre. Walk two streets north to find a jianbing guozi (savory crepe) stand and add two eggs to eat like a local. The Olympic Center Stadium is great for an evening stroll, where you'll see more locals walking than tourists. Danwan Rock: A wobbly, round stone that looks like it's about to fall. It's a popular, viral rock formation on Yishan Mountain. 4. Baiyun Palace: An ancient Taoist temple on the mountain.
