#campingfun Camping in Svinafell, Iceland was one of the best experiences of my trip! Located right in the heart of the Vatnajökull National Park, the campsite was surrounded by incredible glacier views and rugged mountains. For around 2,000 ISK per night (about $15), I set up my tent in a peaceful spot with facilities like hot showers and a kitchen—super handy after a long day of exploring. The highlight of my stay was hiking up to Svinafellsjökull Glacier, just a short walk from the campsite. The views were breathtaking, and I even spotted some ice climbers braving the blue ice walls. There’s no entrance fee for the glacier, which makes it even better. If you’re looking for more adventure, the famous Skaftafell National Park is nearby, with its stunning waterfall, Svartifoss, and more hiking trails to explore. Overall, camping in Svinafell felt like I was in another world. After a long drive in and out of the Eastfjords from the South Coast, I had to really work up the courage to hike before driving to my accommodation in Seyðisfjörður. I'm glad I did it. I really want to see this striped waterfall. This is a steep uphill hike, but luckily it’s not too long at only 2km each way. In fact, you can see the upper part of the waterfall from the beginning of the hike. The last 25% or so of the hike is a rough, stone path filled with slippery boulders. However, it should be no problem for people of average physique and agility to take their time. The 360 ​​degree views up and down are amazing. On the way to climb the small waterfall, you will pass Littlefoss. There is a viewing platform at the end of the trail where you can see the beautiful scenery of the waterfall. If you wish you can walk over the boulders outside the trail to get closer to the waterfall. Interesting waterfall, tall and the earth surrounding it has colorful streaks due to different mineral layers. We climbed steadily up the mountain along the path on the left. Diamond Beach is one of the most spectacular places in Iceland. It's a black sand beach littered with huge chunks of ice that have broken off from the nearby Jökulsárlón glacier and were carried all the way to the beach. You can explore the area on foot or join a short boat tour. Bring a bottle to carry some of the melting water, which is so pure and delicious. Wildlife enthusiasts will also find many birds here. Diamond Beach is located in Jökulsárlón on the south coast of Iceland. You can get there on your own with a rental car, or join one of the daily tours. The area itself is open all day and is free of charge, though you do have to pay for the boat tour.

The Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon in southern Iceland flows into the Atlantic Ocean through a short waterway. Some of the ice is washed back to the shore by the waves, leaving behind shiny ice blocks of different sizes on the black sand beach, which is also known as the Diamond Black Sand Beach. The highlands in Iceland is one of my favorite places on Earth. The different textures and colors that cover the landscape are absolutely breathtaking. One I have is to rent a 4x4 vehicle and drive yourself out into the highlands. You travel through rivers, crossing by beautiful scenery. I would recommend having a guide though, or at least a map, because getting lost can be pretty easy to do. When you're doing a full Ring Road trip around Iceland, one of the biggest challenges is deciding where to stay between destinations. We came across Eyjólfsstaðir Guesthouse while looking for a place to stop in East Iceland before visiting Hengifoss, one of Iceland's most famous waterfalls known for the beautiful red layers of volcanic rock running through the cliffs behind the waterfall. At first, we simply chose this place because of its great reviews and convenient location near Egilsstaðir, but honestly it ended up becoming one of the most memorable stays of our entire trip. Our room was a simple four-person room with shared bathrooms. Normally I can be a little hesitant about shared facilities, but this place completely changed my mind. The guesthouse was incredibly clean and there were so many bathrooms available that we never once felt crowded or had to wait. Parking was easy and convenient right in front of the property, which is always a huge plus when you're road tripping around Iceland with luggage in the car every day. There was also a lovely dining area where guests could sit and enjoy their meals together. The kitchen and common areas were spotless and very well organized, with plates, cutlery and kitchen equipment neatly arranged. There was even a refrigerator available for guests to store their own food, which made life much easier during our Ring Road adventure. Everything felt simple, practical and exactly what we needed after long days of driving through Iceland. But the reason this guesthouse will always stay in my memory has nothing to do with the room. It was the Northern Lights. After a long day on the road, we were sitting inside having dinner and relaxing when one of the staff members suddenly came over and told everyone: "Hurry, go outside and look at the sky!" At first we walked out quite casually without expecting much... and then we never went back inside for almost two hours. The sky exploded with one of the most incredible Aurora displays I have ever seen. The lights were everywhere — moving across the sky, dancing above the mountains and surrounding us from every direction. It was one of those moments that makes you completely forget about being cold, tired or sleepy. Before booking accommodation in Iceland, I actually have a little trick. I always read reviews to see whether previous guests had successfully seen the Northern Lights from the property before. I usually prefer staying outside the city rather than in town centers because there is less light pollution and I am honestly too lazy to drive around chasing the aurora in the middle of the night. My dream scenario is simple: stay at the hotel, step outside, and see the Northern Lights right there. This strategy worked perfectly for us here. From what I found, hotels that regularly have guests reporting Aurora sightings often really do offer excellent viewing conditions, and Eyjólfsstaðir Guesthouse definitely did not disappoint. If you're looking for a comfortable stop while driving around Iceland, especially if you're planning to visit Hengifoss or explore East Iceland, I would absolutely recommend this place. Clean rooms, friendly staff, convenient parking, beautiful surroundings and one of the most unforgettable Northern Lights experiences of my life. Some hotels become part of the trip. Hengifoss is located in East Iceland, near Egilsstaðir and Lake Lagarfljót, and it is one of the tallest waterfalls in the country, dropping around 128 meters. What makes Hengifoss so special is not only its height, but also the dramatic red and orange clay layers between the dark basalt rock behind the waterfall. The whole scene looks so powerful and unique. From the parking lot, you need to hike up to reach the main waterfall. The parking area is quite convenient compared to some other waterfall spots in Iceland. There is a service center area, toilet facilities, and visitor information near the trailhead. The hike takes around 40–60 minutes one way, depending on your pace and how often you stop for photos. The trail starts from the parking area and gradually goes uphill. At first, the landscape feels quite open, with grassy fields, sheep, and wide views around you. After walking for a while, the scenery starts to open up beautifully, and you can see the surrounding valley, mountains, and river below. As you continue higher, the landscape becomes more dramatic and mountainous. The whole trail is actually beautiful all the way, not just at the final waterfall. Along the route, you will also pass Litlanesfoss, another beautiful waterfall surrounded by tall basalt columns. This was such a nice surprise on the hike and definitely worth stopping for photos. After walking further, you finally reach Hengifoss. The waterfall is huge, elegant, and very different from many other waterfalls in Iceland because of the colorful rock layers behind it. The red and orange stripes against the dark basalt make the view feel almost like a natural painting. When we visited, there were also some orange autumn leaves along the trail, which made the atmosphere even more beautiful. After spending some time taking photos at the waterfall, we walked back down. On the way down, there is a route that branches slightly to the left, allowing you to return on the other side and enjoy a different view of the valley. I really liked this part because it made the walk back feel less repetitive, and the scenery was still beautiful all the way. Overall, Hengifoss is a very well-managed and rewarding hike. It is not too difficult, but you should still prepare properly . Jökulsárlón Glacier is about 30 minutes by car from Diamond Beach. The observation deck is about a 10-minute walk from the parking lot. You can see the impressive glacier and lake. Compared to the popular Diamond Beach, there are no tourists here, and parking is free, so it's recommended to stop by here for a break.
