When it comes to family trips in Guangxi, don’t just go to Guilin! Baise hides world-class mountain and water wonders, with 12 breathtaking spots including sinkholes, canyons, lakes, and famous springs. Explore the landscapes with your kids and experience Zhuang ethnic culture—perfect for family travel~ 💎【1. Haokun Lake】The "Sapphire" on the Karst Plateau, with emerald-clear waters surrounded by peak forests. Take the kids boating on the lake, enjoy the scenic views, and the aerial shots are stunning. The kids will be amazed by the beautiful lake scenery. 🏞【2. Tongling Grand Canyon】Asia’s waterfall with the largest single drop cascades from the sky. Mysterious caves hide deep in the canyon. Take the kids on a light hike inside, like stepping into the "Wizard of Oz." The lush vegetation along the way is perfect for teaching kids about plants, and the waterfall mist is refreshingly cool. 🕳【3. Dashiweitan Sinkhole】The world’s largest sinkhole cluster, with a vertical depth of 613 meters. The bottom is a mysterious primeval forest. Visit the sinkhole viewing platform with your kids to feel nature’s masterpiece and teach them geology for an eye-opening experience. 🚣【4. Gulong Mountain Grand Canyon】A magical rafting trip through "one river connecting three gorges." Choose the gentle family-friendly rafting section. The underground river caves connect, offering mild rapids and cave exploration. Water, land, and air activities make it super fun. 🦢【5. E Spring】One of China’s three famous springs, with crystal-clear water and a thousand-year-old ancient bridge reflected in the water. Feed the fish and stroll by the spring with your kids. At dusk, the smoke curls like a watercolor painting, letting kids feel the gentle charm of Jiangnan. 🌅【6. Quyang Lake】A water and peak forest wonder, with 17 karst islands scattered like stars. Take the kids boating through it, like entering a watercolor painting. At sunset, golden light covers the lake, breathtakingly beautiful, and kids will be immersed in the scenery. 🌈【7. Sandieling Waterfall】The "Rainbow Waterfall" by the roadside, where mist refracts rainbows in the sunlight. You can park and snap photos easily. Show your kids the rainbow hanging over the waterfall—super romantic and no walking needed, very convenient. 🏡【8. Longkalai】Also known as Qinglong Lake, during the rainy season, water accumulates in the valley forming winding rivers with gradient green water, like a dancing green dragon. A lesser-known secret spot with few people. Take the kids for a stroll and enjoy the pristine mountain and water scenery. ⛰【9. Longyang Sinkhole】The little-known "Sinkhole Garden," with lush green grass at the bottom and grazing cattle and sheep. The hiking difficulty is low, perfect for walking with kids to get close to nature and experience a different sinkhole landscape. 🏮【10. Jiuzhou Scenic Area】The "Hometown of Chinese Embroidered Balls," an ancient town with blue bricks and gray tiles full of Zhuang ethnic charm. Let the kids try making embroidered balls by hand. The river flows gently under Wenchang Pavilion, time slows down—perfect for a slow family trip. 🌉【11. Buliu River Fairy Bridge】A huge natural stone bridge spanning the river. Drifting under the bridge feels like traveling through a time tunnel. Ancient banyan trees tower on both sides. Take the kids drifting to see the stone bridge and feel the magic of nature. 🕳【12. Tongtian Underground River】An underground maze of dark rivers and caves. Take a boat to explore the stunning stalactites. Light beams shine through the "skylight" above, like a "Journey to the Center of the Earth" on water. Teach the kids how stalactites form—super fun. 📌 Family Travel Tips 🚗 Transportation: The spots are scattered and remote. Self-driving or chartering a car is best. Mountain roads are many, so have an experienced driver and watch the kids’ safety. 📅 Duration: Recommended 5-7 days, split into Jingxi Line (lakes, springs, canyons) and Leye Line (sinkhole cluster). Jingxi Line is easier and better for younger kids. 🌦 Season: Best in spring and autumn (March-May, September-November). Avoid rainy season landslides and summer heat for a more comfortable trip with kids. 🎒 Family Gear: Kids’ non-slip hiking shoes, sunscreen, raincoat. Bring jackets for the sinkhole areas due to temperature differences. Pack kids’ snacks and thermos. 🍜 Family Food: Baise lamb rice noodles (non-spicy version), Tianyang fragrant mango (kids love it), Lingyun white tea (for adults), soft pig blood sausage (try in small amounts).

I can't believe such beautiful scenery in Guangxi is free! These two hidden gems in Jingxi are uncrowded and gorgeous, offering incredible emotional value. They're easy to reach by car, making them totally worth it. 🚗 [Itinerary] Depart from Jingxi city center → Qinglong Lake (Longkalai) [Free] Drive about 1h 15m–1.5h. Take the Yinbai Expressway. There is a stretch of gravel road before the end, so drive slowly. Park in the open space by the road and walk 10–15 minutes to reach the lake at the bottom of the valley! 🏞️ Reasons to visit Qinglong Lake: · Surrounded by karst mountains with winding, healing blue waters · Cows and sheep grazing leisurely on the meadow! · The lake reflections are stunning; every photo looks like a masterpiece · Recommended visit time: 2 hours. Stroll along the shallows, take photos, and just relax · It's an untouched landscape, so remember to bring sunscreen and mosquito repellent 💦 Sandieling Waterfall (2 hours) [Free] Walk 5 minutes to the viewing platform, then head down the stone steps to the pool at the base of the waterfall. A three-tier drop of nearly 100m with massive water mist! It instantly cools the air by 10 degrees. On sunny days after 3:00 PM, you might even spot a rainbow. The water volume is highest during the rainy season, creating a visually stunning effect! ⚠️ Important reminder: The stone steps are extremely slippery! Be sure to wear non-slip shoes. Remember to bring a raincoat or waterproof bag; you will get wet if you get close. We recommend bringing an extra set of clothes. Seeing a little girl walking by the waterfall felt just like a scene from a Studio Ghibli animation. The waterfall in the valley, paired with the cheerful sound of the water, was truly healing.

Autumn in Guangxi isn't as intense as in the north; it's a slow-burning, comfortable season of "yellow ginkgo, golden terraces, fiery red maples, and white sea of clouds" 🍃 As a Guangxi local, I highly recommend these 4 autumn spots! Friends who visited all said they were "reliable, quiet, and great finds" 👇 Seriously, I don't want them to go viral! 🤫 🍂 Guilin · Haiyang Ginkgo Forest 📍 Datongmuwan area, Haiyang Township, Lingchuan County 🎫 Free for the outer loop, about 20 for the core village Route: Rent a car from Guilin North > Millennium Ginkgo on the country road > Photos at Tongmuling > Farmhouse ginkgo stewed chicken Budget: Car rental share 80, chicken 68, per person 120–180 🍁 The ginkgo trees here really seem to glow ✨! When the autumn sun shines down, the whole village is dyed golden yellow. Every photo you take is wallpaper-worthy 📸 And it's not crowded! Really, no crowds! The ginkgo nuts sold by the grandma at the village entrance are super fragrant too~ 🏔 Guilin · Longji Rice Terraces 📍 Heping Township, Longsheng Various Nationalities Autonomous County 🎫 About 80, sightseeing bus extra Route: Direct bus from Guilin > Jinkeng Dazhai > Golden waves at Xishan Shaole > Thousand-layer Heavenly Ladder > Stay in the village to watch the morning mist Budget: Admission 80, one-way cable car 55, bamboo rice 45, per person 200–260 🌾 In autumn, the terraces are golden, like a golden blanket spread over the earth 👑 Staying in the village to watch the mist swirling around feels like something out of a fantasy novel! Sea of clouds + red maples = the ultimate combo 💥 After hiking, having a Yao herbal foot soak—there's no better way to enjoy life 🧖‍♀️ "Autumn in Guangxi doesn't turn yellow all at once; it's ginkgo turning half-yellow, terraces flowing with gold, red maples setting the mountains ablaze, and the white sea of clouds at Shengtang—few people, soft breezes, like stealing a few days away from the world" 🍃 Everyone, go for it! Visit before they get too popular! 🏃‍♀️

I had originally planned to go to Guilin. While I was eating rolled rice noodles in Baise, a local guy at the next table asked why I was going to Guilin, saying there was a lake in Debao that was much prettier than Guilin and that they called it "Altay." I looked it up on the spot. It's about a 1.5-hour drive from downtown Baise, plus another 20 minutes from Debao County. Search for "Longkalai" in your navigation app; some maps label it as "Qinglong Lake." When I arrived, I realized he wasn't lying. The lake isn't large, but the water color is truly unique—a blue-green gradient that no filter could replicate. By the lake is a vast meadow, hundreds of acres spread out among the karst peaks, with cows and horses just roaming freely, unattended. As I walked by, a yellow cow looked up at me, chewed a couple of mouthfuls of grass, and then looked back down. There is quite a bit of cow dung on the meadow, just a heads-up. If you're wearing sandals, watch your step. I walked around most of the lake, which took about an hour. There were flocks of ducks swimming by the water, and a few egrets standing motionless in the shallows. When I reached the west bank, I ran into a family of three laying out a picnic blanket on the grass. The child was chasing the ducks, and the ducks were running away fast. His mom told him to stop, but he didn't listen. After chasing them for three laps, he tripped, cried for a second, then got back up and kept running. The light started to get better after 5:00 PM. The sunset cast an orange outline on the karst peaks, which reflected onto the lake, making the entire surface look like it had changed color. I sat on the meadow for nearly 40 minutes, hearing nothing but the sound of the wind blowing through the grass and the distant sound of cowbells. The only issue is that there are no restrooms, no convenience stores, and no commercial facilities whatsoever. I brought a bottle of water and some bread, and I bagged up all my trash and took it with me when I left. There is a sign by the road that says "Not a scenic area, please pay attention to safety," but there are no other signs. On the way back, I had a bowl of sour soup noodles in Debao County for CNY 8, which was even cheaper than in downtown Baise. ⚠️ Practical tips: · You must drive yourself; there is no public transportation to the lake. It's about a 20-minute drive from Debao County, and the road conditions are good. Once you see the "Qinglong Lake" sign, park your car and walk uphill for five minutes to get there. · There are no commercial facilities, so bring enough water and food, and take your trash with you. · It is recommended to go with others and not stay too late alone, as cell phone signal can be spotty. · There is cow dung on the meadow, so wear comfortable shoes. · If you want to camp, you can set up a tent. The sunset in the evening and the starry sky at night are both beautiful, but you must bring your own equipment.

I chose this customized tour based on Trip.com's recommendation. The beauty of a customized tour is the flexibility to arrange your own itinerary. Trip.com's customized tour service was incredibly thoughtful, making my 10-night, 11-day trip to Guangxi truly rewarding. 🌿 Not only did I revisit the picturesque Guilin, Yangshuo, and Li River, but I also explored the magnificent Detian Waterfall. Even better, I discovered a host of hidden gems! The Cotton Sinkhole and the Cliff Bookstore were unique and artistic, the Dashiwei Sinkhole Group was spectacular, the water at Sanmenhai was stunning, Haokun Lake and Quyang Lake were both beautiful and bright, the pastoral scenery at Longkalai was refreshing, and Dongnayu Bay was vibrant and diverse. The most awe-inspiring part was the Huashan Rock Art; seeing cultural relics from thousands of years ago in person was an incredibly historic experience. ✨ The entire journey was rich, colorful, and delightful. Every day felt like walking through a painting—it completely exceeded my expectations! A quick tip for those planning to go: The attractions on this itinerary are quite spread out, so it's perfect for travelers who enjoy in-depth exploration and natural scenery. The customized tour allows for flexible pacing. I recommend wearing comfortable shoes, as many of these hidden gems require walking to explore. 💫

In September–October, the summer heat in Guangxi begins to fade, and northern Guangxi is the first to welcome autumn. It is the perfect time to avoid the crowds and experience the scenery and local customs. The following five places each have their own highlights, so you can choose based on your preferences: 🍃 Jingxi (Baise) Why visit: Pleasant climate, scenery that rivals Guilin but is much quieter. After September, temperatures stay around 25°C, feeling cool and comfortable. It also has karst peaks, but it is less developed and has fewer tourists. The paths at Goose Spring and Jiuzhou Ancient Town are flat, requiring no strenuous hiking, making it suitable for those traveling with seniors or those who prefer a slower pace to enjoy the reflection of the peaks and the yellowing rice paddies. 🏞️ Luocheng (Hechi) Why visit: Pristine landscapes, boat tours that are easy on the legs. Quieter than Guilin, the main attraction is the Jianjiang River. Take a boat down the river to see the karst peaks and rural villages unfold along the banks, with almost no walking required. The local pace is very slow, perfect for those who just want to find some peace and quiet, eat a bowl of local rice noodles, and relax. 🎉 Sanjiang (Liuzhou) Why visit: Rich Dong ethnic culture and frequent festivals. In October, there is the Dong Duoye Festival, and the Chengyang Eight Villages are surrounded by golden rice paddies. You can see unique Dong architecture and catch lively folk activities, making for a great autumn atmosphere. ♨️ Hezhou Why visit: Autumn hot spring wellness, perfect for both relaxation and activity. The main highlight is the Xixi Forest Hot Spring, which is perfect for soaking away fatigue in the autumn. If you enjoy the outdoors, you can participate in the Hezhou Half Marathon and the Gupo Mountain Trail Race at the end of October, offering diverse ways to enjoy your trip. 🍁 Debao (Baise) Why visit: A hidden gem for late autumn foliage, featuring karst red maples. Located in southwestern Guangxi, the red maples covering the mountains in the Red Maple Forest Park during late autumn are a rare sight in Guangxi. You can also visit the Dwarf Horse Kingdom to see the "panda of the horse world," the Debao pony, which is perfect for those who love natural wonders and family-friendly activities. Quick tips: For a relaxing, slow-paced trip, choose Jingxi or Luocheng; for folk customs, go to Sanjiang; for hot springs or sports events, choose Hezhou; and for red maples, wait until late autumn to visit Debao.

This year, I discovered a new route in Guangxi ✅ · Instead of joining the crowds at Detian Waterfall or Mingshi Pastoral, we traveled from Baise to Hechi, enjoying waterfalls, sinkholes, paddleboarding, blue knife fish, miniature horses, mountain BBQs, and more 🌿 · The kids played so much that they fell asleep as soon as we got back to the hotel every night, making the trip easy and stress-free for parents 👶 · 📅 Day 1: Nanning We arrived in Nanning in the afternoon. After checking into the hotel, we headed to Sanjie Liangxiang, a small but charming street area perfect for a leisurely stroll and some snacks. Two hours was just right ✨ · In the evening, we took a cab to the night market. You must try the local "Lao You Fen" noodles! We also bought some pickled fruits. Fruits in Guangxi are incredibly cheap and sweet—mangoes and dragon fruits are a must-buy! · 📅 Day 2: Nanning → Baise We drove along the He-Na Expressway, known as one of "China's Most Beautiful Highways," straight to Tongling Grand Waterfall 🌊 · Unlike typical waterfalls, you can walk deep into the canyon here. The waterfall cascades down from a nearly 100-meter-high cliff, filling the air with refreshing mist. Standing beneath it in summer is a natural way to cool off! · In the afternoon, we visited the Miniature Horse Manor, which features private forest hot springs and vast grasslands 🌿. In the evening, we enjoyed a DIY BBQ with beef and lamb, creating a perfect mountain camping vibe. · 📅 Day 3: Baise → Dashiwai Sinkhole Cluster In the morning, we visited Debao Miniature Horse Kingdom. It's not just about watching the horses—you can interact with them! Groom their manes, clean their stables, feed them, ride them, and even watch an equestrian show. The kids didn’t want to leave. · In the afternoon, we explored the Dashiwai Sinkhole Cluster. Seeing it in person was truly breathtaking! Standing on the glass skywalk, you can overlook the majestic mountains and feel the grandeur of nature 🏞️ · We also enjoyed cliffside afternoon tea, sipping coffee while feeling the mountain breeze and admiring the layered peaks. Every photo was Instagram-worthy ☕️. For dinner, we had a high-altitude hot pot. Eating hot pot in the cool mountain air was a hundred times better than sitting in air conditioning! · 📅 Day 4: Dashiwai Sinkhole Cluster → Hechi Finally, we experienced the activity I was most excited about—5km of family paddleboarding combined with a blue knife fish spectacle 🛶 · Guided by an instructor, we paddled through emerald-clear waters. The water was so transparent you could see the bottom. When we reached the area where blue knife fish gather, schools of fish swam around our paddleboards. A sprinkle of bait brought them swarming in—it was an incredible sight! · This was the most unique and worthwhile experience of our Guangxi trip ✨ · 📅 Day 5: Hechi → Sanmenhai → Nanning We visited Sanmenhai 🚤, taking a boat ride through dark caves before emerging into open waters. On sunny days, sunlight streams through the cave entrance, creating a stunning Tyndall effect that’s pure magic ✨ · Afterward, we wrapped up the trip with a light and relaxing hike, ending the journey on a leisurely note. · The five-day itinerary was perfectly paced—not rushed or tiring, with plenty of activities to enjoy. It was an immersive way to explore the cool and off-the-beaten-path side of Guangxi, making it an ideal family getaway 💯

What makes it so amazing? Gulongshan Grand Canyon is a national AAAA-level scenic area, featured on Trip.com’s annual reputation list for 4 years in a row. The canyon stretches 7.8 km, covering 17 sq km, connected by four canyons, three underground rivers, and karst caves, forming a unique “four gorges, three caves, three underground rivers” wonder. It also boasts the Gulong waterfall with a single drop of 128 meters and 12 magnificent waterfall clusters. The core feature is “one drift through three caves, drifting through three gorges” — traveling between canyons and caves, alternating between light and dark, playfully called the “three days and three nights” drift by visitors. The summer average temperature is 22℃, making it an ideal summer retreat. 🔥Three must-try experiences | There’s one for everyone! 1️⃣ Classic three gorges two caves drift — a family-friendly underground journey 🚣 Rowed by a boatman, drifting through three canyons and two caves, lasting about 1 hour. The hike is shaded and cool, ideal for seniors, children, and those who dislike water. Summer travel with kids doesn’t have to mean crowded popular beaches. This family-friendly route in Guangxi combines mountains, water, wildlife, geology, and resort experiences. Over 5 days and 4 nights, starting from Nanning, travel along the Hena Expressway through Baise, Leye, Tian’e, and Fengshan, discovering secret scenic spots recommended by China National Geographic. Perfect for families who want to connect with nature while enjoying comfortable accommodations and a relaxed pace. · 🐟 Blue knife fish storm by the Hongshui River The most unique stop on this trip is the Hongshui River in Tian’e. This area has a long-term fishing ban to protect its ecosystem. Clear river water flows through the karst valley, creating a home for blue knife fish. Kids and parents can paddleboard together under the guidance of professional instructors, slowly gliding into the emerald river. As the paddles move, schools of blue knife fish swim past, their silver bodies shimmering in the sunlight, turning the river into a moving painting. Kids trying paddleboarding for the first time say, “The fish swim right under my feet, like being inside an aquarium.” Children 6 and older can join a 5 KM family paddleboarding experience, while younger kids can enjoy watching the fish from a speedboat. · ☁️ Stay above the clouds at Dashiwe sinkhole Visit Leye, the world capital of sinkholes, and explore the Dashiwe sinkhole group. Stand on the Yunhai Tianzhou glass viewing platform, with a 613-meter-deep earth fissure below and rolling clouds and mountains stretching into the distance. In the afternoon, enjoy tea on the cliff edge as the sea of clouds slowly rises from the valley. Spend the night at a cliffside hotel 1,466 meters above sea level, where opening the window reveals mountain views and morning mist. With average summer temperatures of 19–26℃, escape the city heat and enjoy a peaceful night in the mountains. · 🐴 Get close to the adorable Debao ponies In Debao, Guangxi, you’ll find the Debao pony, known as the “panda of horses.” Kids can meet the ponies with an instructor, learn basic horsemanship, groom the manes, feed hay, and try riding. For children, this is more than just a riding experience—it’s a chance to connect with animal care. Parents can relax with afternoon tea or private hot springs among maple trees, giving the family trip a little adult downtime. · 🌊 Explore natural skylights by boat at Sanmen Sea The final stop is Sanmen Sea in Fengshan. Take a boat through naturally formed cave skylights, where sunlight filters through rock walls, casting light and shadow on the clear water’s blue-green ripples. This unique landscape is known as “mountains with sea, sea with gates.” A short hike offers panoramic views of Sanmen Sea, revealing the essence of Guangxi’s karst terrain. · 📅 Itinerary D1: Arrive nationwide > Nanning > hotel meet-up D2: Hena Expressway > Tongling Grand Canyon > pony ranch > private hot spring cabin D3: Debao pony interaction > Dashiwe sinkhole group > Yunhai Tianzhou > cliffside afternoon tea > cliffside hotel D4: Dongfeng sinkhole > Hongshui River paddleboarding > blue knife fish storm > Tian’e accommodation D5: Sanmen Sea boat exploration > return to Nanning and dismiss · Who is this for? ✅ Families wanting kids to experience nature exploration and outdoor activities ✅ Families who prefer hidden mountain and water spots over traditional tourist routes ✅ Families seeking a balance between kids’ experiences and parents’ relaxation Message me with your child’s age and departure date, and I’ll help you find the right tour dates. This summer, take your kids to Guangxi’s mountains and rivers and create a special family memory.

This 4-day, 3-night itinerary is the most enjoyable one I’ve reviewed after completing it. It’s unhurried but lets you explore the wild spots and enjoy the local food. 🚗 How to get there The high-speed train is the most convenient: Nanning to Baise takes about 1.5 hours, and Nanning to Jingxi now has a bullet train (about 2 hours). Taxi fare from Baise station starts at 8 yuan. Since Jingxi and Leye attractions are scattered, it’s recommended to hire a local car for 400–600 yuan per day, which is more relaxed than frequently switching buses. Summer (June–August) is the peak waterfall season, with Tongling and Detian being the most spectacular, though it’s hot; April–May is early spring water rise, and September–October offers clear skies and golden rice fields, the bluest time at Equan. 📅 Day 1|Baise city: red Youjiang + Xiagang street night market Arrive in Baise in the afternoon and visit the Baise Uprising Memorial Park (free, reservation required, closed Mondays). Climb 314 steps to the monument for a view of the Youjiang bend. The Guangdong Eastern Guild Hall where Deng Xiaoping launched the uprising is at the foot of the hill on Jiefang Street. The arcade old street is great for vintage-style photos. For dinner, head straight to Wenming Street or Xiagang Street—this is where locals’ appetites are satisfied. · Rolled rice noodles: thin rice sheets translucent, wrapped with green beans, wood ear mushrooms, and minced pork, topped with yellow bean sauce and chili sauce. 5 yuan per roll, two rolls fill you up · Huang’s roast duck noodles: crispy skin, juicy meat, 9 yuan per bowl, add a spoonful of chili soy sauce · Zhou’s rice noodle dumplings: fresh yam and pork filling, dipped in spicy sauce, 24 pieces per basket · For a daring late-night snack, try Uncle Lu’s grilled pig eye—slow-roasted whole over charcoal, bursting with juice when bitten, served with wild yellow skin sauce, featured in the show “A Bite of Life” Stay in Youjiang district; Wyndham or Red Army Village guesthouse are good options. Head to Jingxi early the next day. 📅 Day 2|Jingxi: underground adventure at Tongling Grand Canyon Jingxi is about 1.5 hours from Baise station by car. The first stop is Tongling Grand Canyon (109 yuan ticket includes shuttle, half price with student ID). I call this “Guangxi’s most underrated hike”—the canyon is 3.8 km long, 300 meters deep at its deepest point, a crack formed by the earth’s crust. Take the shuttle to the entrance, then a 15-minute downhill trail to the canyon edge, followed by about 800 stone steps down to the bottom (remember: what goes down must come up, so save some strength if your knees aren’t strong). The path is shaded by primeval rainforest, with Jurassic “living fossils” like tree ferns and lotus leaf ferns. At the end is the Tongling waterfall, 188 meters high. During the high-water season, mist sprays onto the viewing platform, and on sunny midday you might catch a rainbow. Inside the cave are an underground river and cliff coffin relics. The cave temperature stays around 18°C, so bring a light jacket. 💡 The farm restaurant at the park entrance serves good free-range chicken and river fish. If you still have energy after lunch, add the Gulongshan Grand Canyon rafting (classic Three Gorges Two Caves rafting, 208 yuan). It’s a wet but refreshing experience. Return to Jingxi city in the evening and stroll the Jinxiu ancient town night market. Jingxi’s sour pickles are made with hawthorn vinegar and taste different from Nanning’s, richer in flavor. 📅 Day 3|Equan morning mist → Old Town → Quyang Lake This day is the “healing day” of the trip. Arrive at Equan before 6:30 AM (46 yuan ticket, not free before 7 AM but very few visitors). It’s the source of the Detian transnational waterfall and one of the three famous springs in southwest China. The spring water is a unique blue-green you won’t see elsewhere. A 15-arch Qing dynasty stone bridge lies over it. Morning mist rises as water buffalo slowly cross the bridge—a real-life Chinese landscape painting. Climb the first viewing platform for a panoramic view or spend 20–50 yuan to ride a bamboo raft to the spring’s source, where fish and algae are clearly visible underwater. After 10 AM, visit Old Town (46 yuan ticket, embroidery ball making experience 68 yuan), known as the “hometown of Chinese embroidery balls.” The town features bluestone streets and Zhuang ethnic houses, with embroidery balls piled at every doorstep. You can make one to take home. In the afternoon, visit Quyang Lake (boat ride 66 yuan), a plateau lake surrounded by karst peaks, known as “Little Thousand Islands Lake.” You can bike around the lake or take a boat. The light is softest before sunset. For accommodation, lakeside guesthouses offer lake views, or return to Jingxi county town for more options and dining convenience. 📅 Day 4|Wrap-up or extra adventure If short on time, return this day, picking up Jingxi’s big fragrant glutinous rice, Debao pig blood sausage, and Guiqi mango on the way. If you have more time, swap Day 4 for the Leye Dashiwei sinkhole group—about 2.5 hours from Jingxi. It’s the world’s largest sinkhole cluster, with the Yunhai Tianzhou glass viewing platform suspended over a 613-meter-deep pit. It’s nerve-wracking for the faint-hearted and looks alien in photos for the brave. Add the Buliu River Fairy Bridge rafting, turning 3 days into 5, a geological enthusiast’s dream. 🍜 Baise must-try flavors · Chengbi Lake big fish head: clay pot stew with sour bamboo shoots, milky white soup, fresh with a hint of sourness · Debao pig blood sausage: pig blood mixed with glutinous rice, steamed soft or pan-fried crispy, a breakfast essential · Longlin black rice dumpling: black glutinous rice with pork belly and mung beans, slow-cooked over fire for 6–7 hours, very filling · Jingxi fragrant glutinous rice five-color rice, plant-dyed, a March 3 festival staple · Night market grilled mountain pork and grilled pig penis are milder than grilled pig eye, great with drinks After this trip, I think Guilin is like a carefully groomed young lady you see at the guide’s pace; Baise is a girl raised in the mountains on the China-Vietnam border, with karst as her bones, spring water as her eyes, and red historic sites as her grandmother’s stories. Guilin is a painting; Baise is fate—the mist from the 188-meter waterfall, the blue of Equan at dawn, the burst of juice biting into pig eye at Xiagang Street—these are things Guilin can’t give you. 📌 A few common pitfalls: Tongling Canyon steps are slippery; wear non-slip shoes and rain gear (waterfall mist is heavy). Equan has mist only before 7 AM; if you sleep in, you’ll face the blazing sun. Detian waterfall is near the border; bring your ID. During summer vacation (June 17–August 31), all university students nationwide get free first-entry tickets. Tongling, Gulongshan, Quyang Lake, and Old Town are on the list, so bring your student ID. Baise is a place where the first visit makes you wonder “why didn’t I come sooner,” and the second visit makes you glad “not too many people know about it.”

Before visiting Guilin, I truly believed "the best under heaven" was unbeatable. But when the high-speed train turned into western Guilin and I accidentally arrived in Jingxi—its karst peak forests are wilder than Yangshuo’s, the Tongling waterfall plunges 188 meters into an underground river, and the water at E Spring is as blue as shattered glass. Best of all, there are fewer crowds, no congestion, and prices are very reasonable. This firsthand 3-day, 2-night practical guide will take you through the highlights of Baise and Jingxi. 1. Transportation and local travel How to get there: High-speed trains from all over China arrive at Baise station (Nanning East → Baise about 1.5 hours, Guangzhou South → Baise about 5 hours). After exiting, take the intercity bus to Jingxi (about 1.5 hours, 35 yuan) or taxi/rent a car to drive on the Hena Expressway (known as China’s most beautiful highway, with stunning peak forests along the way). Local transportation: Jingxi’s attractions are spread out, so self-driving or hiring a car with a driver is highly recommended (300–400 yuan per day, including E Spring + Old Town + Tongling + Quyang Lake). There are also direct shuttle buses or carpool options in Jingxi city (30–50 yuan per person). Without a car, you can take a bus from Jingxi bus station to E Spring or Huru Town, then switch to a motorcycle taxi. Best season: March–May for spring water and green rice fields, June–September to escape the heat in the canyon but bring a raincoat for frequent showers, autumn for golden Baze terraced fields, and winter to catch the red leaves in Debao. 2. 3-day, 2-night itinerary Day 1 | Arrive in Baise → Right River old town atmosphere (stay: Youjiang district) Arrive at Baise station by high-speed train in the afternoon, take a taxi to Baise Uprising Memorial Park (free, reservation required, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM, closed Mondays). Climb the monument platform to overlook the Right River, then visit the Guangdong East Guild Hall—the former headquarters of the Red Seventh Army. In the evening, stroll along Jiefang Street’s arcade old street for photos, then walk to Wenming Street or Xiagang Street night market. Must-try late-night snacks include Huang’s roast duck rice noodles (crispy skin, fresh broth, 12–15 yuan), rolled rice noodles with yellow skin sauce (5–8 yuan), Jingxi sour pickles, and fried rice noodles. For the adventurous, try grilled pig’s eye. Day 2 | Jingxi wonderland: E Spring + Old Town + Tongling Grand Canyon (stay: Jingxi city) 7:30 AM depart Baise by hired car to Jingxi (about 2 hours). First stop is E Spring (48 yuan admission, opens at 7:00 AM). Be sure to arrive early! A thin mist covers the 15-arch ancient bridge, the spring water is peacock blue, you can feed koi, walk the stone slab path to the viewing platform for panoramic views, then leave around 9:30 AM. Drive 10 minutes to Old Town (48 yuan admission, outer ancient street is free to explore), known as the "hometown of Chinese embroidered balls." The Wenchang Pavilion with lotus ponds and rice fields is a great photo spot. You can also try making embroidered balls by hand (about 20 yuan). Eat Jingxi rice dumplings or five-color glutinous rice in town or back in the county seat. At 2:00 PM, drive to Huru Town’s Tongling Grand Canyon (ticket including shuttle about 110 yuan, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM). Walk down the plank road through the primeval rainforest to the 188-meter Tongling waterfall. The mist is refreshing. The hike takes about 2–2.5 hours. Wear non-slip shoes and bring a lightweight raincoat but don’t use an umbrella. Return to Jingxi city at 5:30 PM, stroll the beautiful ancient town or try banana leaf grilled fish and Longlin black rice dumplings. Day 3 | Quyang Lake → Return trip (or add Haokun Lake) In the morning, drive to Quyang Lake (about 40 minutes north of Jingxi), buy a boat ticket (about 66 yuan) to cruise the karst "mountain sea," see reflections of peaks on the water, or take photos along the lakeside road. Return to Baise station after about 2 hours for your trip home. If time allows, visit Lingyun Haokun Lake (1.5 hours northwest of Baise), known as Guangxi’s little Nam Co. Take a boat or walk the lakeside plank road, climb the Zhulong Cave viewing platform for a full lake view before heading back. If pressed for time, you can revisit E Spring early on Day 3 for morning light photos and then return directly without rushing. 3. Accommodation recommendations In Youjiang district, stay near Jiefang Street or the high-speed rail station at chain hotels (Vienna, City Convenience, etc.), 120–220 yuan, with night markets downstairs. In Jingxi city, stay along Embroidered Ball Avenue (Jingxi Yicheng, Vienna International), 180–300 yuan, convenient for dining. For mountain and water views from your window, choose a guesthouse near E Spring village (like Qishui Ju, 200–350 yuan), but dining options are limited so book meals with the host in advance. Quyang Lake has a few lakeside boat house guesthouses that require booking at least two weeks ahead. 4. Must-try foods · Roast duck rice noodles/raw rice noodles: broth made from bones, crispy duck skin, a breakfast staple in Jingxi and Baise. · Rolled rice noodles (yellow skin sauce): thin skin wrapped with wood ear mushrooms and minced meat, available in Old Town and Jingxi morning markets. · Five-color glutinous rice: naturally dyed, soft, and fragrant, often served at Old Town farmhouse banquets. · Banana leaf grilled fish/sour soup fish: mountain spring fish in a sour bamboo shoot and tomato broth, fresh, spicy, and appetizing. · Debao pig blood sausage (pan-fried): rice batter and pig blood casing, crispy outside and soft inside, found in Debao and city night markets. · Sour pickles: mango, plum, pineapple pickled with sour plum powder and chili salt, refreshing and spicy. 5. Practical tips · Arrive at E Spring and Tongling Grand Canyon before 9:00 AM. After 10:00 AM, tour groups flood in and lighting gets harsh. · Don’t wear slippers or sandals on slippery plank roads in the canyon. The waterfall mist is heavy; bring a raincoat but don’t use an umbrella. · Student and senior ID cards often get half-price tickets; bring the original. · Summer has frequent thunderstorms. Watch for rockfall warnings on the Hena Expressway mountain section and drive cautiously. · On the way back, buy Guiqi mangoes or Tainong mangoes at city fruit shops (in season, very sweet and cheap), which are better deals than at scenic spots. Guilin is beautiful, a gentle painting; Baise is a wild secret forgotten by time—world-class sinkholes, underground river waterfalls, Zhuang embroidered balls, and a more low-key slow life.

Before going to Baise, I thought it was just an old red town. After arriving, I found out—wow, Guangxi’s mountains and rivers are endless. The Jingxi + Debao + Leye route is amazing. Although July is hot, the waterfalls are at their fullest, which is really great. 🐛 Pitfall guide (starting with this to save you from trouble) July in Baise brings sudden showers. Don’t trust forecasts that say “local rain.” In the mountains, rain can start anytime. Temporary road closures at places like Tongling Grand Canyon are common. Also, when visiting Detian transnational waterfall 🌧️, remember to bring your passport or border pass. Otherwise, you can only watch from afar on the Vietnamese side where they sell coffee. Go to E Spring before 7 AM for free 🎫. After 8 AM, the fee is 48 yuan, which is enough for two bowls of rolled rice noodles. Also, for taxis in the city, try to book transfers on Trip.com. Hailing a ride on the street to Jingxi risks being taken on a detour by “shared ride drivers.” 👕 What to wear In Baise, July feels like 32–36℃ with high humidity. Quick-dry short sleeves and loose cargo pants are the way to go. Holey shoes are perfect for waterfall areas—don’t wear white sneakers. The moss on the stone paths in Tongling Grand Canyon is so slippery you’ll question your life choices 🩴. Don’t skip a sun hat and arm sleeves. The UV rays by the Youjiang River are strong—you’ll get layered sunburn after just 30 minutes. Bring a thin skin jacket because the air conditioning at the high-speed rail station and scenic spots, plus mountain breezes after rain, can be cool. 🌄 Must-visit spots E Spring—the “Little Guilin” of Jingxi. The spring water is unrealistically blue. In the evening, ducks swimming across make a perfect wallpaper. Detian transnational waterfall 🇨🇳🇻🇳 has the highest water volume in July. The three-tiered waterfall thunders down, and you can clearly see Vietnamese people riding motorcycles on the opposite side. Tongling Grand Canyon 🌿 has a one-way downhill trail with no backtracking. Its 188-meter single-drop waterfall is unique in Guangxi. Baise uprising memorial park is free. The red walls and green tiles make for cinematic portraits. Nearby, a Youjiang night cruise costs about 60 yuan and the breeze is refreshing. 🚄 Transportation guide High-speed rail from Nanning East to Baise station takes 1 hour 10 minutes. Second-class seats cost 75 yuan, and trains run frequently. From Baise to Jingxi, take an intercity train that takes 40 minutes. Shared electric scooters are everywhere in the city, starting at 3 yuan. For Detian, it’s best to book a day car rental on Trip.com for 300–400 yuan per car. It saves you half a day compared to juggling buses. Mountain roads are winding, so bring motion sickness medicine if needed. 🍜 Local food Baise people take their noodles seriously. Rolled rice noodles are steamed on an iron plate and wrapped in yellow bean sauce. One roll costs 5 yuan and you can add minced meat. Sour snacks are everywhere—mango + pineapple + plum mixed with chili salt. July is peak season for Guiqi mangoes, which are sweet to the core 🥭. Small pots of field snail and duck feet stew cost just over 30 yuan, soaked in rich broth. Jingxi’s glutinous rice wine is about 10 yuan a bottle. It’s low in alcohol but packs a punch, so don’t overdrink. The old friend noodles shop on Youjiang old street stays open until 2 AM. After a night cruise, a bowl is refreshing. 💡 Suggested itinerary: “Baise station → Jingxi (E Spring + Tongling) → Detian → back to Baise” for a 3-day loop. Book hotels and tickets directly on Trip.com. The border area is quite popular in July and August.

Longkalai, Guangxi Debao Longkalai (also called Qinglong Lake) is tucked away in a mountain corner of Baise Debao. It feels more like a wild paradise hidden among the mountains. It’s not a typical tourist spot but a seasonal wetland formed by underground rivers and karst landforms, with scenery that changes with the seasons. Its core charm lies in its originality and “wildness”: · 🌿 Scenery changes with the seasons: During the rainy season, the winding lake looks like a coiled Azure Dragon; in the dry season, it turns into vast meadows with herds of cattle and horses, often called the “Little Xinjiang of Guangxi.” The lake water is clear and green, surrounded by verdant mountains, making every photo look like a painting. · 🧭 Self-driving tips: Be sure to search for “Longkalai” (not Qinglong Lake) on your navigation. It’s about 12 kilometers from Debao County town, with a mountain road at the end. Sedans can pass slowly, but a high-clearance vehicle is recommended for safety. After parking, it’s about a 10-minute walk to the lakeside. · 📸 Best time for photos: Afternoon to before 3-5 PM is recommended for the best light, avoiding mountain shadows and capturing the richest colors of the meadows and lake. 💡 Special reminders · During the rainy season: The river water is yellow, but if you visit on a sunny day, the water is emerald green! Haha, I was there during the rainy season! · Completely wild: It’s free to visit, but there are no shops or restrooms, so bring your own food and water, and be sure to take all your trash with you. · Weak signal: The mountain signal is unstable, so it’s best to download offline maps in advance. · Respect the animals: Cattle and horses are shy, so observe from a distance and don’t tease them.
