Antelope Island was my first major "wow" moment in Utah. Even on the way to the island, the landscape begins to transform: the Great Salt Lake, pale stretches of dried lakebed, salt flats, mountains, and a sense of being in a completely different world. 🌊 The island itself is located about 65 km north of Salt Lake City. The last 7 miles of the road cross a causeway over the lake, and this stretch alone is worth the trip. Currently, water levels in the Great Salt Lake remain low, so in some places, you have to walk more than half a kilometer to reach the shore, surrounded by vast, pale expanses of salt and parched earth. (stateparks.utah.gov) 🦬 And then the bison appear. This was the moment of pure delight for me. They roam across the island, lounge in the grass, cross the road right in front of your car, and stand calmly against the mountain backdrop as if they own the place 😅 We saw them up close and just sat in the car, thinking: is this actually happening? You can hear them snorting, rustling through the grass, and their heavy hooves hitting the ground. These are the moments that stick with you more than any viewpoint. 🐏 Besides bison, the island is home to pronghorn, deer, bighorn sheep, and numerous birds. The park currently maintains a herd of about 500–550 animals, and every autumn they hold the famous Bison Roundup to manage the population. In 2026, about 800 bison are expected for the fall drive before the herd is sorted. (stateparks.utah.gov) 🚗 Getting here is easiest by car. The park is located about 41 miles from Salt Lake City, and entry costs $15 per vehicle (up to eight people). Antelope Island itself is open daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM. You’ll want to stop at viewpoints, watch the bison, drive further along the lake, and just soak in the vast, open landscape.
