Guan Yu, the brave general renowned throughout the Three Kingdoms, is deeply remembered for his loyalty and righteousness. After the hero's passing, his head rested in Luoyang, his body was buried in Dangyang, and his soul returned to his hometown. These three resting places—Luoyang Guanlin, Dangyang Guanling, and Jiexian Guandi Temple—became the three major Guan Yu worship sites both domestically and internationally, gaining widespread fame. Luoyang Guanlin is the only site in the country that combines tomb, temple, and forest worship, known alongside the Confucius Forest as the "Twin Sacred Forests." The origins of Luoyang Guanlin date back to the Three Kingdoms period. In 219 AD, Sun Quan launched a surprise attack on Jingzhou, leading to Guan Yu's defeat and death at Maicheng. The following year, fearing retaliation from Liu Bei, Sun Quan hid Guan Yu’s head in Luoyang, where Cao Cao was based. However, Cao Cao discovered this and, out of great respect for Guan Yu, posthumously honored him as King of Jing and buried him fifteen miles south of the city, building a temple for worship. This marks the 1800-year history of Guanlin. During the Ming Dynasty, legends of Guan Yu’s divine manifestations were widely believed. In the Wanli era, the Guanlin Temple was expanded from the original Guan Temple, covering over 200 acres. Later, during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, it was further enlarged, preserving its grandeur to this day.
