The Umayyad Mosque in Damascus is located in the old city center of Damascus, the capital of the Syrian Arab Republic. It was built in 705 AD during the Umayyad Caliphate, hence it is also known as the Umayyad Mosque or the Great Mosque of Damascus. This mosque is one of the classic architectural masterpieces of the Islamic world and serves as a model for mosque architecture worldwide. The Umayyad Mosque in Damascus is one of the most important mosques in Islam. Originally, the site was an ancient temple dating back to 3000 BC, later becoming a Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter. In 379 AD, it was converted into the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist. In 636 AD, Arab forces captured Damascus, and in 705 AD, Caliph Walid I of the Umayyad dynasty ordered the construction of the mosque on the original site, which took ten years to complete. Figures 1-11 show the courtyard’s center with three enclosed domed buildings: the western one is the library housing Qur'an manuscripts, the eastern one is the bell tower containing an ancient bell, and the central one is the ablution house with a marble water basin. The mosque has three soaring minarets: the "Bride Tower," square-shaped, located in the middle of the northern courtyard wall; the "Isa Tower," also square-shaped, leaning against the eastern end of the southern wall; and the third, octagonal tower, at the western end of the southern wall. Of these three, only the Bride Tower is contemporaneous with the mosque. Over more than a thousand years since its completion, the mosque has suffered several fires. The only original relics that survived the earliest mosque are a pair of candlesticks and a blue glass window. Most of the current buildings were rebuilt after these fires. Figures 12-20 depict the interior supported by massive marble columns. These columns and the richly decorated walls and ceilings feature intricate carvings and inlays of gold, gemstones, and shells set into red, black, and white marble. Huge crystal chandeliers hang from the ceiling of the main hall. The south wall of the hall faces the qibla and contains four exquisite marble niches and a precious marble pulpit. These niches and the pulpit are adorned with colorful glass and "Kishani" tiles depicting beautiful trees, flowers, and various geometric patterns that dazzle the eye. Among the 41 marble niches is the mihrab facing Mecca, above which is the prayer hall crowned by the mosque’s large central dome, forming the Umayyad Great Mosque. In front of the prayer hall is a rectangular open courtyard fully paved with tiles. While my son and his family were visiting us during the last Eid Holiday, we enjoyed several trips to Damascus's Old City, including a memorable day at the famous Umayyad Mosque, also known as the “Great Mosque of Damascus.” This mosque is recognized as the fourth most holy Islamic mosque in the world and is among the largest and oldest in existence. Situated at the very end of Souq Hamidiyyeh, one of Damascus's renowned marketplaces, the mosque holds great significance to both Christians and Muslims. Inside the mosque, there is a shrine believed to house the head of John the Baptist, or as Muslims refer to him, Prophet Yahya. Additionally, the tomb of the legendary Muslim warrior Saladin is found in a small garden within the premises. Surrounding the mosque are three distinct minarets. My personal favorite is the Minaret of the Bride, which has a captivating story behind its name. Another is the Minaret of Prophet Isa, also known as the Minaret of Jesus. The third, called the Minaret of Qaitbay, appears to be constructed atop an old Roman Tower and features three prominent sections leading upward. To truly appreciate the rich history of Damascus, a visit to the Umayyad Mosque is an absolute must.

I’ve often observed in the Levant region that many old souqs were built alongside castle walls, possibly for security or convenience. When I first visited Damascus in 1975, most shops in Souq al Hamidiyyeh sold Syrian antiques and locally made goods. Nowadays, it seems the majority of products are from China. While some shops still sell authentic Syrian artifacts, many offer newly made replicas. Additionally, weekdays can be crowded with vendors selling goods in the middle of the main street, making it harder to walk through. However, exploring the small streets branching off the main souq is very enjoyable, as they offer more Syrian-made products and are quite entertaining. Recent additions, such as lights along the roof, have enhanced the beauty of this famous market. If you’re a true tourist, a visit to Souq al Hamidiyyeh is essential—it holds immense historical significance and remains a beloved part of Damascus's Old City.

This hotel is perfect for staying in the heart of Damascus' old town, offering a safe area to walk around. The amenities are great and kept very clean. The service is outstanding—special thanks to Ibrahim and his team, who were fantastic and always ready to assist. While visiting Damascus might feel overwhelming to some, this hotel ensures a safe environment for both business and leisure stays. The front door is always locked, with access given only to guests by the hotel staff.

We stayed in two king rooms for four nights. The receptionists, security personnel, and staff were all very friendly and helpful. The rooms were comfortable and spacious enough for two adults and one child. The location was fantastic, surrounded by numerous restaurants, a 24/7 convenience store, and just a two-minute walk to Damascus. The only drawback was the bathroom: the toilet door lacked a lock, and in our room, it couldn’t close fully.
