A HUGE SUPERMARKET IN DA NANG 🔥
This is the only big supermarket that isn't across the Han River, so you'll definitely end up here even if you come for just a few days. I'll tell you what awaits you inside, so you have the right expectations.
🛒 Why it's convenient
First off, it's worth understanding that WinMart is the largest retail chain in Vietnam. So you'll come across small shops with this name around the city quite often.
The one in Vincom Plaza is convenient above all for its location, it's close to the sea. Plus you're in a mall where everything else is already there: cafes, a kids' zone, clothing and footwear shops, homeware… and you sort out your groceries in the same place.
🥭 The range
It's huge. Here you'll find not just the essentials, but the second and third tiers of things too. Starting with food:
· Fruit. There's always mango, dragon fruit, watermelon, mangosteen, durian for lovers of special sensations, grapes, melons, apples, kiwi, papaya. In short, I could go on for a while. Always lots of avocados, sitting in these huge baskets.
· Baked goods. All sorts of croissants, buns with raisins and cream filling, rolls. If you've got a sweet tooth, you'll find plenty to keep you busy here.
· Seafood and meat. Separate zones with big chilled and frozen cabinets, where you can find everything from shrimp to salmon.
· Local delicacies. Cashews, dried jackfruit, fish sauce, coconut sweets, coffee and tea from Dalat.
· Nuts. A big selection of different kinds, with several special zones that sell only these. Cashews, macadamia, hazelnuts, almonds, you name it.
You can't drag me away from the crispy cookies they sell here in big packs, in different flavours, for just $1-1.5 for the whole packet. Now for the things that aren't for your stomach:
· Household chemicals
· Small household appliances
· Dishware, cups, pots, frying pans
· Clothing
· Children's toys
· Flowers
…you get the idea. Walk in, stock up in one place, walk out.
💰 Prices
Not the cheapest, but not sky-high either. I think it's down to there being more tourists here. A lot also depends on the specific items. For example, the price of nuts is no different from other shops, and neither are some kinds of chilled fish, or the cookies I mentioned above, or yogurts. But…
· Fruit is clearly pricier, on average by $1 per kilo
· Shrimp is also pricier, by $2-3 per kilo
· Meat is pricier by $1-2 per kilo
That said, it's important to understand that if you live in the area near the sea, this makes up for the time you'd spend and the distance you'd cover getting to a more remote supermarket. Your total overpayment will be around 10%, no more, and most likely less.
You can pay by any card, and without the extra fees you often run into in Vietnam.🪪
