The evening after exploring Fukuroda Falls, we headed out to try "wild boar hot pot", something I'd wanted to eat for a long time. We visited a spot located in the Yasato district of Ishioka City, Ibaraki Prefecture, "Inaka no Aji Hourokuya" (Taste of the Countryside Hourokuya). In Yasato, "shishi-nabe" is a famous regional dish that makes use of wild boars caught in the local woodlands as part of the area's food culture. This is a popular restaurant where you can enjoy that very shishi-nabe. Step inside, and you're greeted by a traditional sunken hearth and antique furnishings, creating an atmosphere that feels exactly like "rural Japan." Then came my very first wild boar hot pot. Honestly, before trying it, I was wondering, "Will wild boar meat be tough? Will it have a strong gamey smell?" but I couldn't have been more wrong... I was completely surprised when I took a bite! I barely tasted any of the gaminess or odor I had imagined. Instead, the savory flavor of the meat expanded in my mouth the more I chewed. It has a slightly bolder taste than pork, but the fat isn't greasy, making it incredibly easy to eat. It pairs perfectly with the rich, miso-based soup, and even though it was my first time eating wild boar, I instantly thought, "This is delicious!" The hot pot was also loaded with so many vegetables that the meat was completely hidden beneath them. When I first saw it, I thought, "Can we actually finish all this!?" 😂 But once they simmer, the vegetables soften up, and when infused with the wild boar's umami and savory broth, you find yourself eating them surprisingly fast. This is a true taste of Yasato that I want people to try at least once, even if they're a bit hesitant about game meat. Also, the owner left just as lasting an impression on me as the food 😊. He was incredibly kind and talkative, sharing all sorts of stories with us—like how wild boar hot pot has changed over the years and the history behind his restaurant. It's not just the delicious food; encounters and conversations like these on a trip are what truly make lasting memories ✨. I'm so glad I had my first wild boar hot pot here. Depending on the water volume, Tsukimachi Waterfall can either be a two-stream "couple's waterfall" or a three-stream "parent-and-child waterfall." The water level was a bit low the day we went, so we saw the couple's waterfall. While this waterfall is on the smaller side and not super powerful, it's known as an "Urami-no-Taki" (back-viewing waterfall), meaning you can step right behind the falls and look out through the water without getting wet. The water sparkled beautifully, and the sunlight shining through looked just like a spotlight. The view from behind the falls is absolutely stunning✨ Plus, it's completely free to visit! Personally, I actually liked it more than Fukuroda Falls. I grabbed some Soba soft-serve ice cream for 400 yen🍦. It only had a faint hint of buckwheat flavor and tasted mostly like milk. The area around Fukuroda Falls is packed with various shops, making it a bustling tourist hotspot. We visited in late May 2026, and there were still tons of koinobori (carp streamers) flying over the river. I'm not sure if they keep them up all year or if it's just a seasonal thing. Seeing the carp streamers at the ticket booth was a really nice touch, too. The entrance fee for Fukuroda Falls is 500 yen for adults. Maybe due to a lack of rain, the water volume was pretty low, making the falls look a bit underwhelming. I bet it looks incredible when there's more water. It's also a designated "Lover's Sanctuary"—if you look up near the top of Fukuroda Falls, you can spot a heart-shaped stone! For lunch, we had the Shamo (game fowl) bento boxes from Tamaya Ryokan, which were 1,400 yen each. Since it's Shamo chicken, the meat has a very firm, chewy texture. It was incredibly flavorful and delicious, but the tough texture wasn't a hit with my daughter. The adults really enjoyed it, though! You can also buy frozen Shamo meat, eggs, and other goods at the Okukuji Shamo Production Association. The wildflowers growing along the side of the road were absolutely gorgeous. Iris-like flowers were growing wild all over the place. You get to see so many cute flowers that you'd never find in Tokyo. May seemed to be the peak season for the irises, and they were spectacular.
