Stay in any village you like, watch the sea of clouds in the morning, listen to the insects at night—this slow-paced life makes you not want to go home. 📍Basic overview Located in the heart of Moon Mountain in Congjiang County, Qiandongnan, Guizhou, it’s a classic Miao ethnic highland terraced farming landscape. The ticket plus shuttle bus package costs just over 100 yuan. It’s perfect for solo travelers, couples, or small families who love photography and want to escape the city noise to breathe fresh air. 🗺️Itinerary Day 1 Congjiang high-speed rail station → take the direct shuttle to the scenic area → Dangniu viewing platform (for panoramic views and the Lianghua terraces) → Jiaye village (to see the Luosi terraces) → Jiacher Dazhai (stay at a high-altitude guesthouse to watch the sunset) Tip: The shuttle bus in the scenic area allows hop-on hop-off. However, Guizhou’s attractions are quite spread out, so don’t rush around on your first visit. I’ve organized them into 3 routes: classic mountain and water, ethnic culture, and karst exploration. Choose one based on your time and interests, and just follow it! 🌿 Route 1: classic mountain and water tour Suggested route: Huangguoshu Waterfall → Libo Xiaoqikong → Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village → Zhenyuan Ancient Town → Mount Fanjing For first-time visitors to Guizhou, I highly recommend this route. Start at Huangguoshu Waterfall. Standing on the viewing platform, the sound of the water is truly powerful. During the high-water season, the mist hits your face, giving a real sense of Guizhou’s iconic landscape. Besides the main waterfall, Tianxingqiao and Doupotang are also worth visiting. Next, head to Libo Xiaoqikong. This place offers a completely different kind of gentle beauty. The clear lakes, ancient bridges, waterfalls, forests, and streams combine to feel like stepping into a real-life Wizard of Oz. Then go to Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village. During the day, explore the alleys and stilted houses. At night, be sure to visit the viewing platform to see the thousands of lights come on. The layered Miao village lighting up is truly breathtaking. After that, visit Zhenyuan Ancient Town. Walk slowly along the Wuyang River, enjoy the ancient alleys by day, and the riverside night views after dark. Finally, plan for Mount Fanjing. When the weather is good, the sea of clouds, red clouds over the golden peak, and mountain trails make for amazing photos. This route is best planned for 5–7 days. It’s ideal for first-time visitors who want to see all the classic sights in one trip. 🏘️ Route 2: ethnic culture tour Suggested route: Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village → Zhaoxing Dong Village → Jiabang Terraces → Langde Upper Village If you prefer villages, culture, and a slower pace, choose this route. Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village is best for an overnight stay. Don’t just check in during the day. Early morning has fewer tourists, and the stone paths, stilted houses, and mountain mist create a special atmosphere. Next, visit Zhaoxing Dong Village. The drum towers, wind and rain bridges, and Dong architecture are very distinctive. It’s less commercialized than some popular spots, making it perfect for a leisurely walk. Jiabang Terraces is one of my favorite stops. The terraced fields spread across the hillside, and when there’s morning mist, it looks like an ink painting. The transportation here is a bit challenging, but the scenery is definitely worth it. Finally, go to Langde Upper Village to experience a more authentic Miao village atmosphere. Compared to popular large attractions, it’s quieter and better suited for those wanting to learn about ethnic culture. This route suits those who love cultural photography, enjoy visiting villages, and don’t want to rush between attractions every day. ⛰️ Route 3: karst exploration tour Suggested route: Zhijin Cave → Zhijin Grand Canyon → Maling River Gorge → Wanfenglin If you love caves, canyons, and peak forest landscapes, this is the route for you. Zhijin Cave is truly impressive. The cave is spacious, with a rich variety of stalactites. The lighting makes it look like an underground palace. It’s cool inside, so bring a light jacket. Next, visit Zhijin Grand Canyon. The combination of canyon, river, and rock walls creates a strong visual impact. Then head to Maling River Gorge. The waterfalls and canyon here are spectacular. Walking on the boardwalk, you’re surrounded by rock walls and the sound of water, making for dramatic photos. Finally, visit Wanfenglin. The peaks stretch endlessly, with farmland and villages intertwined with the peak forest. It’s perfect for cycling or a leisurely walk. The scenery is especially beautiful in the soft light of dusk. This route is better suited for those who enjoy natural wonders, photography, and light hiking. 🍲 Guizhou food recommendations When you come to Guizhou, don’t just enjoy the scenery—its food is a major highlight! Be sure to try sour soup fish, siwawa, spicy intestine noodles, spicy chicken, and love tofu balls. Sour soup fish is tangy and appetizing, with a very fresh broth. Vegetables cooked in it are also delicious. Siwawa is refreshing, but the dipping sauce is what gives it soul. Spicy intestine noodles are perfect for breakfast—fragrant, spicy, and satisfying. Spicy chicken is very flavorful but quite spicy. If you can’t handle spice, ask for less chili in advance. Love tofu balls are crispy outside and tender inside. Dip them in fish mint sauce for a true Guizhou specialty. 🚗 transportation and accommodation tips Guizhou’s attractions are spread out. High-speed trains connect cities conveniently, but many scenic spots require transfers for the last leg. For first-timers, use Guiyang as a transit hub, then follow your route to Anshun, Libo, Qiandongnan, Tongren, or Xingyi. If you’re traveling with a group, renting a car is much more convenient. If your budget is tight, high-speed trains plus direct shuttle buses to scenic spots are a good option. Don’t stay in Guiyang every night. Follow the route instead. For example, on the classic route, stay in Guiyang, Libo, Xijiang, Zhenyuan, or near Tongren to avoid backtracking. ⚠️ my tips to avoid pitfalls Guizhou has many mountain roads and fast-changing weather. Bring an umbrella, lightweight raincoat, non-slip shoes, and a light jacket. Waterfalls, canyons, and ancient town stone paths can be slippery. Don’t wear shoes that are hard to walk in just for photos. Book popular attractions in advance, especially during holidays and summer vacation. Guizhou isn’t suitable for crossing several distant spots in one day. Focus on one key area per day for a more comfortable experience. What I love most about Guizhou isn’t any single attraction, but the moment fog suddenly rises in the mountains, the lights turning on in the Miao village at night, and the satisfaction of the first bite of sour soup fish. Among these three routes, would you rather start by seeing the waterfall at Huangguoshu or spend a night in Xijiang Miao Village?
