If it’s your first time visiting Sri Lanka, this can be a good reference👌🏻. · Photos 1 & 2: Sigiriya Rock A signature ancient monument of Sri Lanka, a stunning palace in the sky. The best spot to view Sigiriya Rock is from the north at Pidurangala Rock (Photo 1), and I recommend going up early in the morning to watch the sunrise. · Photos 3 & 4: Polonnaruwa From Sigiriya Rock, a 1.5-hour drive takes you to another World Heritage site—Polonnaruwa, the ancient capital of Sri Lanka. Today, several ruins are scattered by the lakeside, and the Buddha statues carved from a single granite rock are worth seeing (Photo 4). · Photo 5: Dambulla Cave Temple Not far south of Sigiriya Rock, the golden and magnificent cave temple with rows of Buddha statues is equally breathtaking. · Photo 6: Kandy Sacred City Continuing south to Kandy, the Temple of the Tooth houses one of the only two Buddha tooth relics in the world (the other is at Lingguang Temple in Beijing), underscoring its sacred status. · Photo 7: Flower-selling Boy Leaving Kandy, boys selling fresh flowers along the mountain roads while chasing cars have become a symbol of Sri Lanka. Their big smiles are truly infectious. · Photo 8: Sky Tower A slender stupa piercing the clouds; standing at the top feels like standing on a needle’s tip. Those afraid of heights should cautiously consider this challenge! · Photos 9-10: Tea Garden Train and Nine Arch Bridge Taking the train from Nanuoya to Ella is the most authentic local experience on the trip. You can sit with locals in the carriage and watch the train wind through the tea hills. · Photos 11-13: Southern Coast From stilt fishing to coconut tree swings, from whale watching in Mirissa to various hidden beaches, the southern coast offers so many activities. It’s worth spending several days here to slowly enjoy the experience. · Photos 14-15: Galle Fort Unlike the previous four World Heritage sites, Galle Fort was built by European colonizers in the 16th and 17th centuries, giving it a unique European charm. It’s perfect for leisurely strolling and relaxing. · Photos 16-18: Colombo You can take the train all the way from Galle to Colombo or just experience the most scenic coastal section from Mount Lavinia to Kollupitiya. This section is also a commuter route, with workers clinging to the train to enter the city in the morning (Photo 17). In the city, the must-visit is the Red Mosque, with its distinctive red and white striped exterior, and you can also climb to the top to view another landmark, the Lotus Tower. · Due to space limitations, I won’t elaborate further here. In October 2023, I set out with my friend for an epic adventure in Sri Lanka—this place is seriously next level! The vibe here is ancient legends meets beachy bliss, with museums, vibrant cities, and some of the dreamiest beaches ever. ⛱️ Sri Lanka is famous for its wild history and tales of demon kings, so of course, we hit up Sigiriya Rock Fortress (Sigiriya Site, Sigiriya 21120, Sri Lanka; open daily 7am–5:30pm). This jaw-dropping spot was once home to the legendary King Ravana, and trust me, the view from the top is 🤯! The climb is a workout, but totally worth every step for those Insta-perfect pics. We also chilled in Kandy (Kandy, Central Province, Sri Lanka)—a city packed with culture and ancient vibes. The Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy 20000; open 5:30am–8pm) is a must-see! Then we headed south to Mirissa, a beach town that’s sooo good for living your best tropical life, surfing, and even whale watching. Colombo had us feeling city glam—with buzzing markets, cool museums, and foodie stops. One place you can’t miss is Ministry of Crab (Old Dutch Hospital, Colombo 01; open daily 12pm–11pm), where we feasted on insane Sri Lankan eats like spicy fish curry and legit the best crab ever. Your taste buds will thank you! And because adventure was calling, we packed in some adrenaline-pumping activities—think hiking, snorkeling, and exploring the legendary gardens of Ashok Vatika (Hakgala Botanical Garden, Nuwara Eliya; open 8am–5:30pm). Sri Lanka: What to do and how to travel 🇱🇰 The best way to travel in Sri Lanka is city → mountains → ocean. This way you don't get tired and really experience the country. Colombo – adaptation Arrive, take a breather, and take your time. We stayed at Amari Colombo – comfortable after a flight and convenient for first walks. Kandy – atmosphere and views We traveled by transfer – trains are often cancelled here. In the evening, a walk around the lake and dinner with a view. I recommend the Slightly Chilled Lounge. Ella – slowing down Mountains, tea plantations, fog, and a sense of pause. We stayed at Blooming Rose Ella. The best place for dinner or coffee is Cafe Chill. Unawatuna – living by the ocean The finale of the route and ultimate relaxation. We stayed at Villa Rumassala Luxury Chalets—green, quiet, and very peaceful.
