Ci County travel guide and discussion

A short drive of just over 20 kilometres from Linzhang brings you to one of northern China's most underrated museums. The Northern Dynasties Archaeological Museum showcases artifacts excavated from the imperial mausoleums of the Eastern Wei and Northern Qi dynasties. More than 130 royal tombs once lay across this region, making it one of the most significant archaeological landscapes of the Northern Dynasties. There is, however, a sense of bittersweetness throughout the galleries. Most excavations took place in the 1980s, when archaeological techniques and conservation methods were far less advanced than today. Some treasures had already been looted and dispersed overseas, others were damaged, while many of the finest discoveries were transferred to provincial museums. Even parts of the original excavation sites no longer survive. What remains here is only a portion of a much larger story—but it is no less compelling. The museum itself is impressively modern. Its exhibition design is elegant and well planned, drawing inspiration from the Datong Museum while embracing the distinctive aesthetic of the Xianbei people. Step inside and you're surrounded by motifs inspired by the northern grasslands, Silk Road exchanges, and the unique cultural fusion that defined the Northern Dynasties. 📍 Location: Northern Dynasties Archaeological Museum, Cixian, Hebei, China 🏛️ Highlight: Imperial tomb discoveries from the Eastern Wei and Northern Qi dynasties ✨ Feature: Royal burial artifacts, Xianbei culture, Silk Road influences, immersive exhibition design, and Northern Dynasties history 🍃 Atmosphere: Modern, immersive, and quietly reflective 📸 Best for: Archaeology enthusiasts, Northern Dynasties history, museum lovers, and cultural heritage exploration 💡 Travel Tip: Pair your visit with nearby archaeological sites to better appreciate the historical significance of this remarkable region. ✨ Signature feeling: Standing before the surviving relics of a vanished empire, imagining the treasures that time—and history—have carried elsewhere. Not every masterpiece survives intact, but every surviving artifact still has a story worth telling. 🏛️✨

Ancient Wudang Mountain: Seeking the Immortal Trail Between the Galaxy and the Sea of Clouds Heading northwest from Wuan, the car plunges deep into the Taihang Mountains. Ancient Wudang Mountain is hidden in the time folds of the southern Taihang Mountains in Hebei, locally called Laoye Mountain, which sounds warm and familiar, like an elderly neighbor. Starting from downtown Handan, it’s about seventy kilometers away—not too far, but not close either. The winding mountain roads block out the hustle and bustle of the world behind. Getting off in front of the mountain gate, you look up to see five peaks facing each other, each topped with a temple, piercing the sky. The scenic area covers more than twenty square kilometers and is both a national geological park and a national forest park. According to records, the main peak is 1,437 meters above sea level. Standing at the foot of the mountain looking up, those peaks seem to pierce the clouds like five silent old men. There are several hiking trails, and I chose the simplest one—the Taizi Slope hiking trail. The stone steps wind all the way up. Proud of my fitness, I soon felt my legs weaken. I rested twice along the way and saw snack stalls by the path—grilled sausages for three yuan each, and hiking sticks surprisingly only five yuan. I bought a stick to steady myself and regained some confidence. The scenery along the way was pleasant: oak trees stood tall on the northern mountain, while pine and cypress covered the southern mountain like a sea. Walking through the forest, the mountain breeze carried the fresh scent of pine needles and earth. Turning a bend, I spotted a stone statue in the distance—that was a statue of Laozi, standing quietly on the mountainside, his beard and hair flowing, exuding a mystical aura. After about an hour and a half, I reached the South Heavenly Gate. It’s a simple stone gate, towering and majestic, as if separating the mortal world from the fairyland. Passing through the gate, the mountain wind hit my face. Looking back, the endless Taihang mountain range unfolded in layers. At that moment, I truly felt like I had stepped into the clouds. Going further up, I arrived at Laoye Peak, also known as the Golden Summit. The ancient temple at the summit, with red walls and black tiles, was originally built during the Sui dynasty and rebuilt in the Tang dynasty. Inside the temple is the statue of Zhenwu Emperor, with incense smoke curling upward. Legend says Zhenwu Emperor was the third prince of the Jade Emperor. Dissatisfied with the foolish Sui Emperor Yang, he wandered here, built a hut, practiced cultivation for over forty years, and attained immortality. Locals call this temple “Laoye Temple,” saying “The god sits inside the temple, the temple walks among the clouds.” Standing here and looking far, the mountains and clouds stretch endlessly, the Taihang Mountains winding like a giant dragon. The most magical thing on the summit isn’t the temple, but the Sky-High Immortal Bridge connecting Laoye Peak and Nainai Peak. This 150-meter-long suspension bridge spans the two peaks, hanging high in the air. The bridge sways gently with the wind, and beneath is a bottomless gorge surrounded by a sea of rolling clouds. Locals have a saying: “People cross the bridge, their souls fly in the sky; if not immortals, better than immortals.” Holding onto the iron chains, I walked forward, feeling the emptiness beneath my feet and the howling mountain wind, my heart pounding in my throat. Reaching the middle of the bridge, whether from the wind or weak legs, I swayed unsteadily. A few young people behind me were braver, posing and taking photos on the bridge. I quickly steadied the chains, thinking this old body better get across quickly. I had planned to wait for sunrise at the summit, but fog rolled in at dusk, and the clouds were thick. It seemed unlikely I’d see it tomorrow. Descending as night fell, the night tour lights at the foot of the mountain were already on—mystical forests, ocean worlds, Wudang legends, all dazzling with colors, as if entering another world. Just as I was feeling regretful, distant bell chimes suddenly rang out, deep and slow, echoing through the night and mountains. The bell echoed in the valley for a long time, like a response, or a farewell. Coming down the mountain and looking back, Ancient Wudang Mountain was already hidden in the night, with only scattered lights faintly visible. This mountain’s history predates the southern Wudang Mountain, with temples built since the Sui and Tang dynasties. It is the elder brother in the “Northern Brother, Southern Brother” pair. For thousands of years, Zhenwu Emperor has sat on the Golden Summit, and Tai Chi master Zhang Sanfeng has attained enlightenment here. And I am just a passerby who came at dusk and left at night. Though the bell has faded, the mountain wind, clouds, ancient steles, and the nervousness on the bridge have all become echoes in my heart. Some places are enough to visit once; some places, once visited, stay forever in dreams.

The Northern Dynasties Archaeological Museum is located in Cixian County, Hebei, and opened on September 19, 2020, with a total investment of CNY 166,000,000, a building area of about 12,000 square meters, and a collection of more than 5,000 artifacts. In August 2024, it was designated a national second-class museum. The museum's theme is "Toward the Sui and Tang", and it has three main exhibition halls—"Glorious imperial capital", "Grand rites and ceremonies", and "Vast civilization"—plus a special exhibition hall, which together present the history of the Northern Dynasties, burial rites, and cultural exchanges. The exhibits mainly come from Northern Dynasties tomb groups and include pottery figurines, murals, and building materials, with highlights such as the painted screen from the tomb of Sima Jinlong, beast-faced roof tiles from Ye city, and ancient Roman-Byzantine gold coins. The special exhibition hall features a 1:1 full-scale reconstruction of the Wanzhang Northern Dynasties mural tomb, with murals on both sides of the passage totaling 700 square meters, showing the painting characteristics of the late Northern Dynasties. The exhibition uses 3D technology to enhance the interactive experience and emphasizes ethnic integration and Silk Road cultural exchange. The Tomb of Gao Su, Prince of Lanling, is located east of Liuzhuang Village, Cixian, Handan. It is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit and one of the best-preserved tombs in the Northern Dynasties tomb complex. The site is open to the public for free, features a dedicated parking area, and is managed by on-site staff, ensuring a comfortable visiting experience. Unlike the surrounding raw Northern Qi tombs, this site features a complete wall and main gate system, with orderly and well-regulated management. The tomb mound has withstood a thousand years of weathering and retains its original appearance. The ancient stele remaining in front of the tomb is a precious stone carving from the same period, authentically recording the life of the Prince of Lanling and the historical landscape of the Northern Qi dynasty. Cultural highlights The tomb's occupant, Gao Changgong, was a top general of the Northern Qi dynasty, known for both his handsome appearance and exceptional military talent. Historical records describe him as having a "gentle appearance but a brave heart, with a voice and countenance both beautiful." Because his delicate features made it difficult to intimidate enemies, he created a unique mask-based combat strategy. In the Battle of Mangshan, he led a small force to defeat a much larger enemy, creating a classic miracle in military history. This victory gave birth to the "Lanling Wang Ru Zhen Qu" (The Prince of Lanling Enters the Battle), which has been passed down through generations and become a classic symbol of traditional Chinese music and dance culture. Travel tips Recommended visit duration: 30–60 minutes Suitable for: History buffs, sightseers, and families interested in cultural education You can combine your visit with the Northern Dynasties Archaeological Museum and the Cizhou Kiln Site for a one-stop exploration of Handan's Northern Dynasties cultural heritage.

Cixian Tianzi Tomb is a highly distinctive, authentic cultural heritage site built upon a thousand-year-old Northern Dynasties imperial tomb. It lacks heavy commercialization, offers great value, and is perfect for history buffs and travelers looking for niche destinations. Visitor experience The core of the scenic area is a massive ancient burial mound standing amidst continuous farmland. With an open view and unique landscape, you can intuitively feel the grandeur of the Northern Dynasties imperial mausoleum. As the Western Mausoleum of Emperor Xiaojing of the Eastern Wei, it is a core remnant of the Northern Dynasties tomb complex, preserving the original layout and historical appearance of the ancient mausoleum. The folk temple at the top of the tomb is simple and tranquil, and a ¥10 ticket covers the entire tour. The water-sound steps behind the mountain are the biggest highlight; the unique ancient architectural structure creates a magical acoustic phenomenon, hiding the wisdom of the ancients and offering great fun. It is difficult to hear the water sound when hiking alone, so visiting with a companion provides a better experience. Facilities are very convenient, with free parking at the entrance, making it stress-free for self-driving trips. The scenic area is not large, and the pace of the tour is relaxed, making it suitable for short trips or a one-day excursion to experience the historical and cultural heritage of the Northern Dynasties up close. Tips It is recommended to visit on a sunny day for better views. You can combine this with attractions like the Yecheng Ruins in Cixian and the Northern Dynasties Museum to plan a complete cultural tour route.

When visiting Huludao, don't limit your itinerary to just the sea! Many people don't realize that Huludao is a crossroads of civilization in the Western Liaoning Corridor, where Central Plains farming, northern grassland, and maritime trade cultures have converged for millennia. All the answers are hidden within the Huludao Museum. The core and most stunning part of the museum is the "Cultural Integration" exhibition area, where 127 artifacts weave together the ancient prosperity of Western Liaoning✨ The Warring States gold-handled bronze short sword is incredible! The blade features the sharp, distinct style of northern nomadic peoples, while the gold-plated handle incorporates exquisite Central Plains craftsmanship, perfectly illustrating the unique blend of civil and military culture on the frontier. The Warring States bronze dou (ritual vessel), covered in intricate panhui (coiled dragon) patterns, serves as direct evidence of the coexistence of Central Plains ritual systems and the Shanrong culture of Western Liaoning. The roof tiles from the Qin and Han Dynasty Jiangnü Stone Palace, featuring shell-inlaid cloud patterns, combine royal cloud motifs with seaside seashell elements, offering an instant glimpse into the cultural connection between the mountains and the sea. The Cizhou kiln porcelain unearthed from the Yuan Dynasty Suizhong shipwreck confirms the region's once-busy maritime trade, showing how inland culture traveled far along the Bohai Sea. There is no dry accumulation of history here; every artifact is evidence: Western Liaoning was never just a border, but a channel of civilization where north and south connected, and mountains and seas merged. ✅Travel tips 📍Address: Huludao Museum 🎫Ticket: Free (register with ID card for entry) ⏰Duration: About 1 hour 💡Suggestion: Stop by while visiting the beach; it's a great, low-cost way to elevate your entire trip

Xiaojing Mausoleum, also known as "Tianzi Zhong" (Emperor's Tomb), is located on a hillside southeast of Qiangang Village, Jiangwucheng Town, Ci County, Hebei Province. It is one of the tombs in the Northern Dynasties tomb complex and serves as the final resting place of Emperor Xiaojing of Eastern Wei, Yuan Shanjian. The existing burial mound is over 50 meters high and over 120 meters in diameter, making it the largest surviving imperial tomb from the Eastern Wei and Northern Qi periods. Tomb occupant: Yuan Shanjian (524–552). He was the great-grandson of Emperor Xiaowen of Northern Wei (Yuan Hong) and the last emperor of the Eastern Wei, reigning for 16 years. Although talented in both literature and martial arts, he was a puppet of the powerful Gao family. In 550, he was forced to abdicate to Gao Yang, marking the end of the Eastern Wei. In 552 (the second year of the Tianbao era), he was poisoned by Gao Yang at the age of 28. The following year, he was buried with imperial honors at the Ye West Mausoleum, which is today's Xiaojing Mausoleum. Today, more than 10 replica ancient buildings, including the Jade Emperor Hall, the Goddess Temple, and the Guanyin Pavilion, have been built on the top and sides of the burial mound. The railings on the steps are carved with patterns in the style of the Eastern Wei, creating a unique landscape that blends historical mausoleum features with folk worship. Additionally, there is the water sound staircase wonder. In 1994, a 109-step blue brick staircase was built on the north side of the burial mound, measuring 23.9 meters high and 5 meters wide. When walking on the steps, visitors can hear a crisp "ding-dong" sound like running water, yet no water is visible. This acoustic phenomenon is caused by the unique construction of the steps and is the most famous feature of Xiaojing Mausoleum. It is currently a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level. ------------------------- Opening hours: Open all year round. Admission: 10 yuan. Transportation: (For reference) Bus: From Ci County town: Take the shuttle bus to Jiangwucheng Town, get off at Dongcaozhuang Village, and walk west to Qiangang Village. You can watch a tangerine sea sunset, go camping and barbecue, or take a slow walk around the lake. It is a hidden gem for weekend relaxation, family trips with kids, or a romantic getaway for couples. We didn't just rush through this trip, but stayed a night by the lake to truly capture the gentlest moments of Yiquan Lake. Slow walk around the lake, unlocking multiple lakeside views Yiquan Lake has a vast surface, and the road around the lake stretches for about 19 km. Whether you drive or rent a bicycle for a slow ride, there are surprises along the way. The most popular spot is the viral floating bridge in Beiguo Village. The S-shaped bridge extends into the lake, making you feel like you are walking on water. On clear days, the blue sky and water reflect each other, making every photo look like a fresh, professional shot. At sunset, the atmosphere is even more incredible. When water levels change in summer and autumn, large areas of natural grassland are revealed, turning into a lakeside prairie with a wild feel. You can walk, take photos, or try leisure activities like horseback riding and go-karting. The lakeside also features an artificial beach, speedboats, and fishing areas. If you like excitement, try the water activities; if you prefer peace, find a spot by the lake to sit quietly, watch water birds skim the surface, and let the pace of life slow down completely. Sunset and camping, the most healing weekend When visiting Yiquan Lake, you must not miss the lakeside sunset at Yanyu Pavilion. In the evening, the setting sun slowly sinks toward the lake, covering the water in warm golden light. The evening breeze carries the moist scent of the lake, and flocks of water birds fly across the sky. The whole scene is gentle and healing, truly Handan's version of a tangerine sea. The scenic area has open lawns and well-equipped tent and RV campsites, making it perfect for camping, picnics, and outdoor barbecues. Sitting together with family and friends, enjoying food while feeling the lake breeze, and watching the stars light up as night falls is cozy and relaxing. Every winter, a large number of migratory birds come here to overwinter, making it a great time for bird watching and photography. Living by the lake, bringing the scenery into your window For a deeper vacation experience, I recommend staying a night in the scenic area. There is a wide range of choices, from lake-view hotels and unique homestays to RV courtyards. Open the window of a lake-view room to see the vast water surface. Wake up to birdsong and lake views in the morning, and sit in the courtyard waiting for the sunset in the evening. Some homestays even have private courtyards where you can barbecue or drink tea, which is especially convenient for family trips. Guests staying overnight can usually enjoy conveniences like shuttle bus transfers. Without the need to rush your itinerary, you can watch the morning mist over the lake and enjoy the sunset glow in the evening, truly making the most of this lake view. Practical travel guide Tickets and opening hours The scenic area is free to enter and requires no reservation. You can access the area around the lake all day. Some water activities and campsites charge separate fees. Parking is convenient, with some spots costing 5–10 yuan; please check on-site for details. Transportation The scenic area is located about 6 km west of the Ci County seat in Handan and about 30 km from downtown Handan. For self-driving, navigate to "Yiquan Lake Scenic Area" or "Beiguo Village (viral floating bridge)." It takes about 40–50 minutes to drive from the city center, making it an excellent choice for a weekend road trip. Suggested itinerary · Half-day leisure: Check in at the viral floating bridge in Beiguo Village > Slow walk around the lake > Wait for the sunset at Yanyu Pavilion · Two-day vacation: Day 1: Arrive in the afternoon, go camping and barbecue, experience water activities, watch the sunset by the lake, and stay in a lake-view homestay; Day 2: View the lake and migratory birds in the morning, take a walk along the lake, and then head back Tips 1. It is windy by the lake, and there is a significant temperature difference between morning and evening, so it is recommended to bring a light jacket. Take precautions against sun and mosquitoes when camping. 2. The floating bridge scenery and water levels change with the seasons; check the latest real-time updates before you go. 3. For cycling, you can rent multi-person bicycles and stop to take photos along the way. You can inquire on-site about speedboats and camping equipment. 4. For dining, you can try the Ci County full-fish feast or fresh lake food. You can also bring your own ingredients for a barbecue, but confirm the venue rules with the campsite in advance. We are always looking for poetry in distant places, often ignoring the scenery right on our doorstep. Yiquan Lake has no crowds, only a vast water surface, a gentle sunset, and slow vacation time. This weekend, why not drive out, stay a night by the lake, and leave your worries to the evening breeze and the lake water.

It is one of the three major royal grottoes of the Northern Qi Dynasty, divided into the North Xiangtang and South Xiangtang sections. North Xiangtang is the largest in scale and contains the most essential statues. Legend has it that the mausoleum of Gao Huan is hidden within the grotto's niches. This 3-day, 2-night itinerary focuses on the North Xiangtang Grottoes, connecting them with South Xiangtang and Northern Dynasty archaeological remains. The pace is relaxed, balancing in-depth grotto exploration with a Zen-like slow lifestyle. It is suitable for history and culture enthusiasts, study tours, and niche travel photography. I. Miscellaneous (audio guide, snacks, souvenirs): 100–260 yuan Total summary (for two, 3 days 2 nights) ✅Budget student version (city accommodation + separate tickets): 530+230+400+70+100 = 1,330 yuan, per person 665 yuan ✅Mass comfortable version (scenic hotel includes tickets, best value): 716+30+650+140+200 = 1,736 yuan, per person 868 yuan ✅Zen light luxury version (homestay + intangible cultural heritage experience + food): 716+30+900+140+260 = 2,046 yuan, per person 1,023 yuan V. Practical tips to avoid pitfalls 1. Tour order suggestion: North Xiangtang first, then South Xiangtang; North Xiangtang has many stairs, put physical effort on the first day, visit small attractions easily on the second day. 2. Golden time for photos: 3:00 PM—5:00 PM, best light and shadow in the caves; enter the scenic area before 8:00 AM, almost no tour groups. 3. Equipment reminder: It is cold and damp inside the grottoes, bring a thin jacket; many stairs on mountain roads, must wear non-slip flat shoes; flash is strictly prohibited inside the caves. 4. Big money-saving trick: Prioritize hotel packages that include tickets, saves 160 yuan for two people directly, much more cost-effective than buying tickets online separately. 5. History bonus: Rent an electronic audio guide in advance. Every cave in North Xiangtang has Northern Qi historical stories. It is easy to miss the connotation of the stone carvings without listening to the explanation. VI. One-sentence summary Avoid the crowds and immerse yourself in the Northern Qi royal grottoes. Spend the first day delving into the essential caves of North Xiangtang and capturing the light and shadow of the stone carvings; the second day visiting South Xiangtang + landscape ancient villages; the third day slowly visiting the Northern Dynasty cultural museum. The whole journey is relaxed, allowing you to understand the thousand-year-old stone carving art while enjoying the quiet Zen of Gushan forest. It is the top choice for niche historical site travel in Hebei!

The water at Yiquan Lake is still. Reeds stand in clusters on the opposite bank, and the silhouette of the Taihang Mountains in the distance fades into a line. Coming here in October, the wind on your face is cool, but the sunlight on the embankment is warm. 2 days in Cixian start from this shallow lake. 🌅 Yiquan Lake is west of the county seat, a large body of water formed by a reservoir. 🌊 Walking along the embankment, the view is wide. Water birds skim low over the shimmering water, then dive in and pop back out. There is a greenway by the lake, perfect for cycling or walking. There are benches and shade along the way, so you won't feel tired as you stroll. In autumn, the tops of the reeds turn white. When the wind blows, the whole field sways; you can stand there for a long time and never get bored. In the evening, the water color changes bit by bit. You can stay on the embankment a little longer to watch the sky slowly darken. People fish by the lake, setting up their rods for half a day just for this peace and quiet. In the villages by the lake, grain is drying on rooftops, and firewood is stacked outside courtyard walls. Occasionally, a tricycle rattles by on the embankment. There aren't many stalls by the lake, so bring water before you head out to avoid having to turn back. In the Fengfeng Mining District, not far from Cixian, the Xiangtangshan Grottoes are a place that requires a calm mind to appreciate. 🗿 The grottoes are carved into the mountain, with statues sculpted against the rock walls—niches, guardians, and celestial beings lined up in order. The lines of the statues' robes are still visible, with clean cuts that show how the craftsmen worked back then. Their faces are round and square, with calm expressions. Some statue heads in the niches have been worn away by moisture and time, leaving only outlines, but patterns on the grotto ceilings are still discernible. The grottoes are scattered across the mountain, connected by stone steps. The slope isn't steep, so just take your time. There are also ruins of old buildings scattered on the mountain; the foundations and walls remain, with stones neatly stacked, showing the original layout. Speak softly when visiting, and don't touch the rock walls; the stone is brittle where it's damp. Don't overthink it; just looking at the carvings and statues themselves is enough to keep you occupied for a while. Cizhou ceramics are another highlight. 🏺 From selecting clay and throwing on the wheel to glazing and firing in the kiln, each step is interconnected. The white-ground black-flower decoration is its signature style. You can see various shapes like pillows, vases, and jars, with decorations including carved and incised patterns, all with clean, precise lines. In the kiln sites and exhibition halls, you can see both fragments and complete artifacts, allowing you to compare the clay body, glaze, and patterns. The exhibition hall displays complete pillows and vases with shiny glazes; if you look closely, you can see tiny pores on the clay body. It's just a short walk from the kiln site to the exhibition hall, and seeing the process and the finished products together gives you a clearer understanding. Just think of it as learning about an old craft; seeing how the clay takes shape in the hands is more intuitive than reading about it. You can't skip menzi for lunch. 🥣 Menzi is cut into chunks or strips, then pan-fried or stir-fried. It's crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, perfect when dipped in garlic sauce. You can eat it hot or cold; some people have it with drinks, while others stuff it into flatbread as a main meal. Every place makes it a little differently. Pair it with a flatbread and a bowl of hot soup, and you won't feel tired after a day of walking. The home-style dishes in the county seat are generous in portion; if you're a small group, order a little less—no need to be extravagant. After eating, stroll through the old streets of the county seat. Shops line the street, selling everything from cooked food to groceries, full of local life. Accommodation is simple. The budget hotels in the county seat are clean and tidy, reasonably priced, and those near the main street are convenient for finding food at night. If you want more peace and quiet, you can choose a homestay by the lake or at the foot of the mountain. The conditions are modest, but you can hear the insects at night. Here's a 2-day itinerary: Arrive in the county seat on the first morning, and visit Yiquan Lake in the afternoon. The next morning, head to the Fengfeng Mining District to see the Xiangtangshan Grottoes, visit the Cizhou ceramics in the afternoon, and head back in the evening. Leave some extra time; it gets dark early in the mountains, so don't cut your return trip too close. A few things to keep in mind: The grottoes and exhibition halls have specific opening hours. Check the signs at the entrance when you arrive to avoid a wasted trip. The wind in the mountains is strong, so bring an extra layer. Using a flashlight to look at artifacts is steadier than using your phone's light. Connecting the lake, grottoes, and kiln sites into 2 days isn't a long journey, and it doesn't feel rushed.

Handan is located at the southern tip of Hebei, at the eastern foot of the Taihang Mountains ⛰️. It sits at the intersection of four provinces—Shanxi, Hebei, Shandong, and Henan—and hasn't changed its name in 3,000 years. It is truly the capital of idioms and allusions 📜, with stories like "Hu clothing and mounted archery," "carrying thorns and pleading for punishment," and "learning to walk in Handan" all originating here. I completed this three-day itinerary myself, covering city culture, grotto relics, and the Taiji ancient city. The pace is balanced, so you won't feel like you're rushing the whole time 🚶. Day 1: Searching for idiom relics in the city 🏛️. Head straight to the Handan Museum in the morning. Admission is free, but you must book in advance. It is closed on Mondays, so don't make a wasted trip. The Warring States bronze horses and the Handan smiling statues in the museum are particularly stunning; you will quickly understand the history of the Zhao State after seeing them. For lunch, grab a bite nearby and try the Yilouyou dumplings—thin skins filled with juicy meat, bursting with flavor in every bite 🥟. In the afternoon, visit Congtai Park. Entry is free, though there is a separate fee to climb the Wuling Congtai, which was King Wuling of Zhao’s viewing platform. The park is lush and shady, perfect for a stroll. Next, check out Huiche Alley and Xuebu Bridge. Both are free to enter. The narrow bluestone alleys are where the "General and Prime Minister Make Up" story took place, and the bridge is quaint and quiet, making for a great photo spot 🌿. In the evening, head to the Handan Road historical district. When the lights come on, the ancient buildings look beautiful—perfect for a leisurely stroll. The downside is that the district gets very crowded on holidays, so come early if you want to take clean photos. Day 2: Fengfeng Grottoes and intangible cultural heritage route 🗿. Start the morning by heading to the Xiangtangshan Grottoes, the royal grottoes of the Northern Qi Dynasty. The relief carvings are exquisite and stunning. Tickets are required, and since the scenic area is far from the city, allow plenty of time for your visit. On the way back, stop by the Cizhou Kiln Museum. Admission is free, and the white-glazed pottery with black patterns is mesmerizing—you can get an up-close look at the charm of northern kilns. For lunch, stop at a local shop in Fengfeng and order Wu'an Zhua noodles; the noodles are thick and chewy, served with a rich sauce 🍜. In the afternoon, continue viewing the stone carvings and take your time admiring the scriptures and flying apsaras on the grotto walls. A quick heads-up: there are many stairs when climbing the grottoes, so your legs will be sore by the end. Be sure to wear comfortable flat shoes. Return to the city in the evening to stay and get some rest to save your energy. Day 3: A slow tour of the Guangfu Taiji Water City 🌊. Entry to Guangfu Ancient City is free, though some exhibitions inside charge a separate fee. It is a rare water-surrounded ancient city in the north and the birthplace of Taijiquan. You can rent a bike and ride along the moat; the wind blowing through the reeds is relaxing and carefree 🚲. Visit the former residence of Yang Luchan and Hongji Bridge. The bridge is quite old, and the stone carving details are worth a close look. For lunch, try the Guangfu crispy fish; the bones are tender and soft, and the sweet and sour flavor is delicious—no need to spit out bones, it has a very unique texture 🐟. Spend the afternoon leisurely wandering through the ancient city streets, watching the local elders practice Taiji, and soaking in the slow-paced small-town life before packing up for your return trip. The downside is that the ancient city is large, so walking the whole thing is tiring, and the midday sun is strong, so remember to use sun protection. 🚌 [Transportation Guide]: High-speed rail goes directly to Handan East Station. Taxis and buses are convenient for city attractions. For suburban attractions like Xiangtangshan and Guangfu Ancient City, driving yourself is the most worry-free option. Public transport options include long-distance buses, but they aren't very frequent, so check the schedule before you leave. I don't recommend taking unlicensed taxis on the street, as they are prone to overcharging. For accommodation, I recommend prioritizing the Congtai District, as it is convenient for travel and dining. If you want quiet, choose a room that doesn't face the street. If you have a sufficient budget, you can choose a traditional-style homestay with a courtyard. For good value, choose a chain hotel—they are clean and convenient 🛏️. Food Recommendations ✨. Yilouyou dumplings, fresh and juicy; Guoba Huoshao, layers of flaky crust wrapped around smoked meat, crumbling with every bite; Yongnian donkey meat sausage, firm and savory; Doumo (bean porridge), with a dense texture and rich sesame aroma, perfect for breakfast; Guangfu crispy fish, sweet, sour, and tender, great as a souvenir. Tips to Avoid Pitfalls ⚠️. Be cautious about buying crispy fish or sausages from street vendors in scenic areas, as the quality can be inconsistent; buy local specialties from established, long-standing shops in the city. Do not touch the artifacts inside the grottoes and follow the venue's rules. Don't easily trust low-priced one-day tours, as they often add shopping stops. Be sure to book the museum in advance; you likely won't be able to enter if you show up without a booking. This 3,000-year-old city hides too many stories to just be a place for a quick visit. Walking through the ancient alleys, you can almost touch the history of a thousand years ago. The food is simple and authentic, and the pace is slow and uncrowded. Take three days to come here, read about the idioms, see the grottoes, and stroll through the water city—it is an immersive experience of the profound northern ancient charm, and it will definitely be a trip worth taking.

Tomb of Lanling Wang (Gao Su). Located 5 km south of Cixian, Hebei Province, it is one of the Northern Dynasties tombs in Handan. This is the tomb of Gao Su, grandson of Emperor Shenwu of Northern Qi, Gao Huan. The tomb mound is large. In front of the tomb stands a white marble statue of Lanling Wang, surrounded by an openwork wall. To the south is a stele pavilion, housing one of the existing Three Gao Steles of Cixian. 1. Gao Su Stele (Lanling Wang Stele) 2. Gao Sheng Stele 3. Gao Fan Stele The tomb owner, Gao Su (541–573), was the grandson of Emperor Shenwu of Northern Qi, Gao Huan, and the third son of Emperor Wenxiang, Gao Cheng. He was enfeoffed as the Prince of Lanling in Xuzhou and was a renowned general of Northern Qi, skilled in both civil and military affairs. Because of his handsome appearance, he often wore a fierce mask in battle to intimidate the enemy. In the Battle of Mangshan, he led 500 elite cavalry to defeat the Northern Zhou army and lift the siege of Luoyang, achieving great merit. Later generations created the famous ancient musical piece Lanling Wang Entering the Battle. Because his achievements overshadowed the emperor, he was forced to drink poisoned wine by the Last Ruler of Northern Qi, Gao Wei. In the 6th year of Wuping (575), a stele was officially erected, and he was buried here. Lanling Wang Stele: The full name is: Stele of the Late Prince Lanling Zhongwu, Grand Preceptor and Grand Marshal of Qi. The stele is made of bluestone and is approximately 4.1 meters tall. The top of the stele is coiled with 6 dragons. The inscription contains over 2,000 characters, filling gaps in the Book of Northern Qi and correcting the historical error that Gao Su was the fourth son of Gao Cheng. It is a precious artifact for studying the history and calligraphy of the Northern Dynasties. It is now a national 4A-level tourist attraction. Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level. ------------------------- Opening hours: Morning: 8:30 AM–11:30 AM Afternoon: 2:00 PM–5:00 PM Admission: Free Transportation information: (For reference) Bus: Take the rural passenger bus from Cixian, get off at Liuzhuang Station, and walk west to reach the scenic area. Honestly, the wooden architecture left to us by the Tang Dynasty is incredibly scarce—there are only 3.75 in the entire country 🏛️ I've already visited 2.5 of them, and the rest are in Yuncheng and Dunhuang. I'll keep you in suspense for now~ I recently visited the original Nanchansi, and it truly amazed me ✨ To be honest, this is a treasure that Mr. Liang Sicheng missed back in the day. It wasn't even recorded in the county annals in time and was only discovered after 1949. The level of sophistication is top-tier. The robust momentum of the Tang Dynasty dougong (bracket sets) supporting the massive roof, with space for Buddha statues of all sizes—it truly embodies the grandeur of a great nation! In contrast, the small, painted dougong of the Ming and Qing dynasties have been reduced to mere decoration—conservative and cramped, with a stingy vibe. It's just a pity 🤷 📝 Fun fact: Here is the breakdown of the 3.75 sites 👇 ✅ Foguang Temple East Hall, Xinzhou ✅ Nanchansi Main Hall, Xinzhou ✅ Guangrenwang Temple, Ruicheng County, Yuncheng 🔸 Half: Lower level of the Bell Tower at Kaiyuan Temple, Zhengding County 🔸 0.25: Cave eave of Mogao Cave 196 After seeing these early examples and looking at today's architecture, one word comes to mind: iteration 🔄 From thatched cottages to the golden age of the Tang Dynasty, the people on this land have constantly created and been shaped, spiraling upward to where we are today. By the way, I usually stay in hotels when I travel. Over the years, I've felt the iteration and upgrade of the accommodation experience—from the first generation of standardization to today's smarter, more detail-oriented designs. It's quite interesting~ I've also been listening to the book "In the World" recently, and a passage really moved me: "China was once qualified to be called China because it mastered the most advanced technology; in history, some people from the Xiongnu and Mongol empires, which were once foreign worlds, also wanted to integrate into China; and those forces that set out from China to embrace and absorb the world eventually gave back to this land, making it a better China." This makes me want to recommend a few lesser-known museums: Taosi Civilization Museum, Northern Dynasties Archaeological Museum, Yecheng Archaeological Museum, Jin State Museum, and Jiexiu Museum. They are all worth visiting 🏛️ 📸 Photos 1–4 are of Nanchansi, and 5–9 are of Yanqing Temple (located 6 km north of Nanchansi; founded in the Tang Dynasty, the current structure is from the Jin Dynasty)
