Chicheng travel guide and discussion

📍Location: At the border between Yanqing District, Beijing and Chicheng County, Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province (main entrance and core area are in Hebei Chicheng, but very close to Beijing Yanqing, often considered a Beijing suburban destination). Altitude: The core resort area is about 1,300-1,500 meters above sea level, offering cool and pleasant summers (perfect for escaping the heat) and cold but enchanting snowy winters (with winter sports available). Key experiences: Alpine meadows, forest oxygen bar, 1473 Summit Café, RV campground, outdoor activities (cycling, hiking, camping, etc.), and relatively well-developed resort facilities. (1) Travel Guide Highlights: 1. Best Time to Visit: Summer (June - early September): Highly recommended! Cool climate (about 10°C lower than downtown Beijing), lush greenery, and wildflowers in bloom—ideal for hiking, camping, cycling, and summer retreats. A jacket may be needed at night. Autumn (mid-September - mid-October): Vibrant foliage, crisp air, and great for hiking and photography. Winter (December - February): Snow-covered landscapes, perfect for winter sports (check seasonal offerings like snow parks or snowmobiling). Temperatures are very low, so pack warm clothing. Spring (April - May): Warming temperatures and blooming flowers, but winds can be strong, and the scenery is less impressive than in summer or autumn. 2. Transportation: Self-driving (most recommended and convenient): Route: Take the Jingli Expressway (Yanchong Expressway) from Beijing (e.g., North 5th Ring Road), exit at "Dahaituo/Yanjiaping," and follow navigation for about 15-20 minutes to reach Haituo Valley Resort. Total travel time: ~2-2.5 hours (depending on starting point and traffic). Road conditions: The expressway is well-maintained with many tunnels and bridges, significantly reducing travel time. Observe speed limits and drive safely in mountainous areas. Parking: Available within the resort (some accommodations allow parking near lodging). 3. Accommodation Options: Haituo Valley RV-Park: The most unique! Experience American-style RV stays with full amenities (bed, bathroom, kitchen) and a private yard—great for families or groups. Book early, especially in peak season. Glamping/Camping: Pre-setup tent hotels (e.g., Starry White Bear Tents) offer comfortable camping (with beds and heating). BYO tents are allowed in designated areas (check seasonal availability and fees). Apartments/Hotels: Swiss-style townhouses and serviced apartments (e.g., Ruilan Hotel) provide standard hotel services for comfort-seeking travelers. 4. Dining Options: Resort Restaurants: Cafeterias (Cloud Cafeteria/First Cafeteria): Buffet or set meals with good value and variety. Hot Pot/BBQ: Dedicated hot pot and barbecue restaurants. Western Restaurants/Cafés: E.g., 1473 Summit Café (mountain-top) and lakeside restaurants—great ambiance but pricier. Convenience Stores: Supermarkets for snacks, drinks, and daily essentials. 5. Practical Tips & Notes: Altitude & Temperature: Even in summer, mornings, evenings, and rainy days can be chilly (or cold). Pack long sleeves, fleece, or a light down jacket. Sun protection (strong UV) and windproof gear are essential. Clothing & Gear: Comfortable hiking or sports shoes (especially for 1473 Café). Seasonal attire (sun hats, sunglasses for summer; warm layers, gloves for autumn/winter). Rain gear (mountain weather changes quickly). Personal meds and insect repellent (summer). Cash: Mobile payments are widely accepted, but carry some cash for areas with poor signal or small vendors. Eco-Friendly: Pack out all trash, protect nature, avoid picking plants, and do not disturb wildlife.

Karha Private Hot Spring Hotel We went to Chongli for fun, and my husband specially chose this private hot spring hotel The overall style is wabi-sabi, and I took a lot of beautiful photos and had a lot of fun As soon as I entered, there was a little stray dog that was so cute, and I fed it ham sausage. The hotel has complete facilities. The toiletries are my favorite lelabo33. The bed is also very soft, but the pillow is too soft and uncomfortable. The private bath is conveniently located indoors, but it didn't feel very clean, so I just soaked my feet there. The hotel provides free welcome drinks, and I also asked the butler to send coffee to the room, which was pretty good. It snowed the next morning and we went to have breakfast. It was porridge and some side dishes. We were very full. There are also supporting facilities such as a pub and a gym, which are quite good, but I didn't go there because I didn't have time. There is nothing good to eat around here. I suggest you bring some simple food, instant noodles, etc.

The mountain climbing in the woods will not be very dry~ This time I came to the cafe to see the town. The treasure of the store "Money~~ is probably waiting for this environment. It even loves to eat grass <(^ )> into the coffee shop at an altitude of 1472 meters, drink a cup of coffee in a natural Internet cafe, breathe Look at the air in the high place, beautiful ~ can also overlook the entire sea otter valley ~

Taking the kids to Magic Valley for magic training We set up a magic circle, played with dandelion flower magic, and even made wands from the Fairy House Nature Wizard series 🐶 . Beijing is surprisingly hot in September, but we really wanted to get out. We were looking for a cool place where we could take a leisurely stroll. . After some thought, our family of three decided to head to Haituo Valley, where we go every year. Whether indoors or outdoors, as long as you're not standing in the sun, it's truly cool enough that you don't even need air conditioning. . The scenery is beautiful, with the feeling of a magical town at the foot of the Alps. Of course, the main draw is that there are plenty of things for me and my little "magic girl" to do here. We've designated this as our primary training ground for nature wizards. . After arriving this time, we went straight to the Kanlu Mini Camp to make fairy houses. The best part is that there's a full supply of natural materials, and you're even allowed to bring a bag up the mountain to collect your own. It's fantastic. In addition to the fairy houses, we also made a few wands to carry around with us. . Together with the kids, we used the materials we collected to make some magical-looking flower balls and magic circles. . Then, I invited my little "magic girl" to the Haituo Club Castle Restaurant for some food and drinks. It was also a great opportunity for her, as she's been obsessed with photography lately, to take pictures of the scenery from up high. . The cafe on the second floor of the castle is called "Merlin's Beard," presumably opened by that legendary, noble grand wizard. We ordered a butterbeer and raised a glass in tribute. The atmosphere is quite nice, though I'm not sure when we'll get to meet the grand wizard himself. . ✅ Practical tips: 🎪 Travel and accommodation: Navigate to Haituo Club Valley Holiday Hotel . 🎪 Activities 🔹 The Kanlu Finland Camp has DIY treehouse activities; there are also forest treasure hunts, mountain walks, and orienteering activities 🔹 The train around the lake is a must-do every time; our little train enthusiast loves it 🔹 Kids who love animals can visit the Rainbow Ranch, Squirrel Kaka Park, or go horseback riding by the lake 🔹 Kids who like thrills can play with go-karts, bumper cars, UTVs, and paddleboards . 🎪 Dining: 🔹 Haituo Club Castle Restaurant (the main meals include Hong Kong-style hot pot, exquisite private kitchen dishes, terrace barbecue, and Japanese teppanyaki) 🔹 For afternoon tea, you can go to the aforementioned "Merlin's Beard" cafe, which serves freshly ground coffee . 🎪 Other: 🔹 The temperature difference is quite large; wear short sleeves during the day and a windbreaker at night. Wear comfortable shoes for hiking 🔹 It's a great place to escape the heat. It feels significantly cooler than in the city, with temperatures around 10–15°C at night, so you won't need air conditioning at all. The UV rays are strong during the day, so be sure to use sunscreen! 🔹 There are many winding mountain roads as you approach, so drive carefully and slowly. Bring motion sickness medicine

Laozhanggou is located in Fengyuandian Township, Guyuan County, Zhangjiakou (near the Chicheng border). It is the source of a tributary of the Baihe River. It is free to enter, has no commercial scenic area management, and is known for its birch forests, meadows, streams, off-roading at Haohanpo (Hero's Slope), and stargazing camping. Every time I come to Haituo Valley for vacation, many people struggle with accommodation! Trendy RVs look good but are expensive, hard to book, and lack private bathrooms. This time I tested Yueshan Jushi, and I truly think it's the best solution for regular tourists, families with kids, and girls' trips. No trendy price premiums, killer location, comfortable and worry-free stay—definitely a high-value hidden gem in Haituo Valley 🏡 📍Location | The most convenient spot in the entire resort (new key point) Yueshan Jushi is located in the heart of Phase 1.2 of Haituo Valley, right in the center of the park. The advantages compared to other accommodation areas are obvious: It's just a few minutes' walk to Swan Lake, the Great Lawn, and the trendy RV base, so you don't need to drive back and forth across the huge park. It's very friendly for traveling with seniors and children! If you get tired, you can return to your room to rest at any time—no rushing, no hassle. The pace of a 2-day, 1-night vacation instantly becomes relaxed and carefree. 🏡Room types & real stay experience The entire building is in an Alpine European style, with light-colored exterior walls and wooden balconies. You don't need to look for specific photo spots; the building itself has a great atmosphere, and any snapshot feels like a Swiss town. There's a comprehensive selection of room types: king rooms, twin rooms, and multi-person two-bedroom suites are all available, suitable for short couple trips, girls' getaways, families of 3 or 4, and small group team-building events. ✅You must choose a high-floor balcony room! A key tip to avoid pitfalls Low-floor units are easily blocked by trees and buildings, offering an average view; On high floors, you open the balcony to a panoramic view of the rolling valley—misty mountains in the morning, wild fields in the afternoon, and sunset glows, all in full view. The interior is clean and tidy, with an open layout that doesn't feel cramped. Disposable toiletries, a refrigerator, and basic appliances are all provided, creating a cozy home-like atmosphere that doesn't compromise on comfort. 💰Hidden money-saving perks (insider tips rarely mentioned by others) Staying at Yueshan Jushi includes free admission to Haituo Valley for everyone! Individual tickets cost 55 yuan/person, so a family can save hundreds on tickets. This effectively doubles the value of the stay, which is one of the biggest reasons I choose it first. Parking in the park has a capped fee, with transparent pricing and no hidden costs, so those driving can rest assured. 🚶Exclusive recommended itinerary (new customized schedule) Staying at Yueshan Jushi means no need to rush blindly. Just follow this itinerary: Day 1: Drive from Beijing → Check in and drop off luggage → Stroll around Swan Lake and feed the black swans → Walk and take photos on the Great Lawn → Watch the stunning sunset at the mountaintop cafe in the evening → Watch the starry sky from the balcony at night Day 2: Wake up early to see the misty valley wonderland → Wander around Rainbow Ranch and go for a light hike → Enjoy a leisurely farm-style meal → Rest and head back The whole trip is relaxed and not tiring, fitting the pace of a vacation, with no need for intense, fast-paced sightseeing. ✅Comparison review: Yueshan Jushi vs. trendy RVs (new exclusive comparison) Many people blindly rush to the RV camp, but based on my test, I really don't recommend everyone follow the trend: ▪️Trendy RVs: Good-looking, great for photos, but expensive, cramped space, mostly shared bathrooms, extremely hard to book during peak season, and average comfort—only suitable for people just looking for photo ops. ▪️Yueshan Jushi: Stylish, private bathroom, spacious room, comfortable stay, central location, affordable price—balancing experience and value, suitable for 90% of regular vacationers. ⚠️Super honest pros, cons & tips to avoid pitfalls Real pros 1. Unbeatable location, walk to all core attractions, zero commute time within the park 2. Many room types, spacious, highly suitable for families and group travel 3. Free admission included, real savings 4. Quiet building, away from the noise, very peaceful for sleeping at night 5. Incredible high-floor views; you can see the mountain mist from your bed or balcony Objective minor downsides (no sugarcoating) 1. Breakfast not included; you need to walk to the park's commercial street for meals 2. Older mountain building; heating equipment can be a bit dated in autumn/winter, so it might feel cool during seasonal transitions 3. No private courtyard; think twice if you are looking for a private, detached villa vibe Essential travel reminders 1. Haituo Valley is at a high altitude, so the temperature difference between day and night is huge! Even in midsummer, it's cool in the morning and evening, so bring a light jacket. 2. There are many mosquitoes in the mountains, so remember to bring mosquito repellent for outdoor activities. 3. Water supply in the mountains can be unstable; hot water may fluctuate if many people wash up at the same time, so it's better to stagger your usage. 4. If you want to see the stunning starry sky and morning mist, prioritize booking during sunny, windless weather for better photo opportunities. ✨Personal summary When traveling to Haituo Valley, you really don't need to blindly chase trendy spots for accommodation. Yueshan Jushi doesn't hype itself up or overcharge; it offers the most comfortable stay at a very reasonable price. Convenient location, excellent views, maximum value, and suitable for a wide range of people. If you are traveling with family, on a couple's getaway, or a short trip with friends, you can't go wrong with Yueshan Jushi—it's definitely the best choice for a "Little Switzerland" vacation near Beijing!

The main part of the summit hiking trail is in the southeastern part of Haituo Valley, as shown by the yellow dashed line in Figure 2. ▲ For the summit hiking route, search for "Haituo Valley" on the 2bulu app and find the most common 8.23 km route to use as a reference. Most routes on the app are clockwise, but we did it in reverse, counter-clockwise. Our reasoning: by the time we reached the 1473 Coffee House counter-clockwise, the hike was nearly over, making it a more logical and relaxing place to rest. Our starting point was also different from the one on 2bulu, but it's a loop anyway. Also, we took a wrong turn on the way down from the coffee house to the foot of the mountain, adding a couple hundred meters to our hike. The ridge is exceptionally well-forested, primarily with birch trees; it's almost entirely broad-leaved forest. The entire ridge section facing Haituo Valley is covered by trees, so the best views are on the outer side toward Beijing and Huailai, while the view of Haituo Valley itself is blocked. The 1473 Coffee House is the soul of this route, the finishing touch. Built at an altitude of 1,473 meters on the summit, it's a chic wooden cabin and is said to be the highest-altitude coffee shop around Beijing, with fantastic scenery and views. The coffee is a bit pricey, but we each had a cup—since we were already there. The 1473 Coffee House is also the only place on the entire route with great views on both sides of the ridge. The choice of location and design is incredibly sharp. Trail conditions: We started from the side of Swan Lake, first taking the scenic area's concrete road, then a gentle uphill dirt road similar to a farm track, before turning onto a mountain dirt path. Some sections are quite steep and have ropes for assistance. Near the coffee house, the path is paved with wooden boardwalks, railway sleepers, and stone-laid paths, which are easier to walk on. If you don't have enough stamina, you can just do a round trip to the 1473 Coffee House; follow the signs to find the way to the coffee house. One thing to note: there is a spot where you have to squeeze through a gap in the scenic area's metal fencing. It's uncertain if or when this might be blocked off. If you go counter-clockwise, you'll pass through here first, which makes more sense. If you go clockwise, you'll have already completed most of the hike by the time you reach this point, and if you find it blocked, it would feel like a bolt from the blue.

Weekend Escape Near Beijing | Roaming the Landscapes of Chicheng, Encountering Nature and Local Life! Escaping the city hustle, we chose to drive to Chicheng, Zhangjiakou. It hides quite a few niche natural landscapes, perfect for a short getaway to relax. Our first stop was Houcheng Red Cliff (Forty-Mile Long Cliff). Looking from afar, the reddish-brown Danxia rock walls stretching for dozens of miles across the land are truly stunning. In the afternoon, sunlight spills onto the cliffs, painting the rocks in warm orange tones. Standing at the viewing point looking out at the mountains, the view is expansive. You can take a short hike to experience the majestic granite mountains up close. It's worth visiting for those who love photography, and the atmosphere at sunset is absolutely perfect. Afterward, we drove to Bingshanliang (Ice Mountain Ridge), a relic of the Quaternary glaciation, where the mountain is covered with granite rock seas and strange stones of various shapes. The summit is at a high altitude and can be quite windy, so be sure to bring a light jacket. Standing on the high ground, you can see layers of distant mountains unfolding before you, offering a vast view. If you have enough time, many visitors wait here for the night. It's said that on clear days, you can see a sky full of stars. On the way, we also stopped by Haituo Valley, known as the "Little Switzerland near Beijing." With stretches of black pine forests, gentle meadows, and the tranquil waters of Swan Lake, taking a slow walk around the lake while feeling the mountain breeze made me feel completely relaxed. The valley is well-equipped with campsites and trails, making it comfortable for both a simple stroll or a camping break. It's cool in midsummer, making it a great natural spot to escape the heat. After playing all day, running through the wilds and seeing the mountains, we were a bit tired. In the evening, we returned to Chicheng County and stayed at the Ximei Jinxi Hotel again, as it is the only 4-star hotel, ensuring a certain standard in all aspects. We chose the signature tatami room type, which was a pleasant surprise and the highlight of our stay. The room layout is unique, with a spacious tatami area and simple, comfortable decor. Unlike a standard double bed, it has a great atmosphere and felt very fresh. The room was clean and tidy, well-equipped, and the service was responsive. After a day of traveling, it was a great place to rest peacefully. The hotel has its own Phoenix Restaurant, so we didn't need to go out to find a place to eat, which was very convenient. We had dinner there. I highly recommend the stewed chicken with mushrooms at Phoenix Restaurant! The chicken was tender and flavorful, the mushrooms were fresh and fragrant, and the broth was rich—an authentic local taste with generous portions that was very satisfying. Also, the stone pot tofu was full of smoky flavor, served piping hot. The tofu was soft, tender, and juicy, perfect with rice, and very comforting to eat while hot. Overall, Chicheng is very suitable for a short road trip. The natural scenery is pristine, and it's not overly crowded. After getting tired from playing, staying at this hotel offers a one-stop solution for dining and accommodation. The tatami room type is worth experiencing, and don't miss the food at Phoenix Restaurant. If you travel to Chicheng, you might want to consider staying here.

Having lived in Beijing for a long time, my deepest feeling is: The most relaxing weekend is never about rushing to trendy attractions to check in. It's about finding a quiet, uncrowded place where you don't have to fuss, so your body and mind can fully unwind after a tense week. Shopping districts and popular scenic spots in the city are always packed, leaving you exhausted. In fact, Beijing's outskirts hide many low-traffic, high-quality, no-competition niche destinations. No early starts or long drives are needed — day trips or a short, easy overnight stay are enough to feel completely relaxed. Here are 4 local favorite stress-relief spots, designed to avoid the usual crowds. They suit regular office workers, stay-at-home parents, and people traveling solo. 1. Laba Goumen | the forest hideaway in the Beijing suburbs perfect for lazy lounging Compared with overdeveloped nearby hills, Laba Goumen has preserved its most primitive mountain forest ecology. Its biggest advantage isn't a must-share photo spot, but an overall experience that feels incredibly easygoing. The whole forest is densely planted and shaded, naturally blocking the heat and staying more comfortable than the city year-round. Trails are gentle and wide, with almost no steep slopes, so you don't need to exert yourself. No rushing, no full-on climbing — strolling, pausing to feel the breeze through the trees, and listening to birds and running water is the best way to de-stress. The seasons here are especially vivid: spring and summer bring tranquil greenery and excellent cooling; in late autumn, the hills are covered in red leaves, peaceful and uncrowded. If you want to escape city noise and quietly breathe and unwind, you won't go wrong choosing this place. 2. Yishui Lake | pristine northern waters and mountains, a slow-vacation spot without the crowds Many people have stereotypes about northern landscapes, but the scenery at Yishui Lake will completely change your mind. Surrounded by mountains, the lake is clear and bright. The interplay of water and hills creates a unique northern ink-painting vibe that is quiet, grand, and easy on the eyes. Unlike other crowded scenic areas, the pace here is very relaxed. You can take a leisurely boat ride to soak in the lake breeze, or walk the boardwalk to climb a little and enjoy expansive, transparent views that soothe every anxiety. What's most considerate is the restrained commercialization — no aggressive sales, no overwhelming crowds. After visiting, stop by Taihang Water Town to experience local traditions and try regional snacks. The itinerary stays relaxed, not rushed, making it perfect for a short weekend getaway. 3. Haituo Valley | the suburbs' top healing spot, an emotional refuge for grown-ups If you're tired of the oppressive concrete of the city, Haituo Valley offers a completely different experience. It's not a place for ticking off sights; it's more like a small healing town tucked away in the mountains. The higher elevation brings clear blue skies and fresh air, wide open views, and a strong sense of atmosphere. Here you don't need to hunt for attractions or rush your schedule — bike through the pine forests, sit by the lake and daydream, or sip coffee at a mountaintop café while watching the clouds. Every way of being here is extremely comfortable. Whether you're unwinding alone, on a short couple's date, or taking the family for an easy outing, it fits. Unlike the fleeting novelty of trendy spots, the slow rhythm here truly helps you settle down and shed a week's worth of fatigue and internal stress. 4. Emerald Island | where sea and sand coexist, a one-of-a-kind romantic spot near the capital Around Beijing, it's hard to find another natural landscape where sea and desert coexist. Emerald Island is unique. On one side is the gentle, endless sea; on the other are soft, vast sand dunes. The two extreme landscapes blend into a distinctive, upscale atmosphere. Beaches are clean and uncrowded, the water is clear and mild — perfect for walking along the shore or sitting quietly to listen to the wind. The dunes are gently beautiful and highly photogenic, niche but great for pictures. At dusk, the sunset fills the sand sea with warm light, creating a soft, healing scene. There's no city noise, only sea breeze and tranquility. If you want to get away from the crowds and enjoy a quietly romantic weekend, this is an excellent choice. For adults, the best weekend recharge has never been about rushing to check places off a list. It's about finding a peaceful spot, slowing down, and emptying your mind. These 4 niche suburban hideaways near Beijing are easy, uncrowded, and fail-safe, making it simple to unlock a relaxed weekend for Beijingers✨
