I just got back from Hawaii and I’m still buzzing! This 8-day, 7-night three-island trip was absolutely incredible. I stayed up late to put together the most useful, no-fluff guide online — attractions, pitfalls, and experiences all included. If you’re planning to go, copy this itinerary; if you don’t have fun, come back and find me! 👇 ✈️ Before you go · 3 golden rules 1. How to pick the best time? May–Oct is the dry season with plenty of sun for water activities. Nov–Apr is whale season, and you can see humpback whale migration in Jan–Mar. I most recommend the shoulder seasons (Mar–May, Sep–Nov) — fewer people, great scenery, and cheaper hotels for the best value. 2. How to get around? Public transit in Hawaii is limited, so renting a car is a must. On the Big Island attractions are spread out and you won’t get far without a car. Book online in advance — it’s at least 40% cheaper than airport counters. Renting a convertible on Oahu looks great for photos. To go up Mauna Kea on the Big Island you must drive a 4WD. 3. What to pack? Sunscreen! Sunscreen! Sunscreen! Important enough to say three times. The Hawaiian sun is intense — bring at least two bottles of sunscreen. Also, if you go stargazing at the volcano, bring a down jacket — the summit can get really cold. 🏝️ Oahu · 3 days of classic highlights Oahu is the gateway to Hawaii, offering both bustling city life and beautiful beaches. Day 1: Waikiki Beach + Diamond Head 1. Waikiki Beach — the world-famous golden coast and a beginner’s paradise for surfing. Free entry; surf lessons cost about $50–$150 per hour. Its 2-mile stretch of golden sand, clear water, and stunning sunsets make every photo postcard-perfect. 2. Diamond Head — Oahu’s most iconic hike. The trail is about 1.6 km and takes around 1–1.5 hours at a normal pace to reach the summit. You’ll get panoramic views of Waikiki and Honolulu from the top — the classic Hawaii postcard shot. Entrance fee $5 per person. Highly recommend catching the sunrise for the best light. Day 2: Hanauma Bay snorkeling + Kualoa Ranch 3. Hanauma Bay — Oahu’s most popular snorkeling spot. A natural bay formed in a volcanic crater with clear water and abundant fish; even beginners can see lots of tropical fish. ⚠️ Closed every Monday and limited to 700 visitors per day, so aim to arrive before 8:00 AM. 4. Kualoa Ranch — Hawaii’s second most popular attraction! Filming location for Hollywood hits like Jurassic Park, Pearl Harbor, and Godzilla. ATV tours, jungle adventures, and ziplining are super thrilling. A must for movie fans. Open 7:30 AM–6:00 PM. Day 3: Pearl Harbor + Polynesian Cultural Center 5. Pearl Harbor — a must for history buffs and a key WWII site. Visit the USS Arizona Memorial and the USS Missouri battleship. ⚠️ Allow 3–4 hours. Open daily 7:00 AM–5:00 PM. September–November and April–May offer good weather with fewer crowds. 6. Polynesian Cultural Center — immersive South Pacific island culture. Six recreated island villages, hula and torch dances, buffet dinner, and a large evening show. 🌋 Big Island · 3 days of breathtaking sights The Big Island is Hawaii’s largest island — from snow-capped peaks to rainforests, active volcanoes to black sand beaches, its geological diversity is off the charts! Day 4: Volcanoes national park + black sand beach 1. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park — one of the world’s most active volcanic areas! Check out Kilauea viewpoints, steam vents, and the Thurston Lava Tube. Park entrance $30 per vehicle, valid for 7 days. Open 24/7 year-round. ⚠️ Try to arrive before 10:00 AM for fewer crowds and better chances of seeing volcanic activity. 2. Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach — the sand is black and shiny like crushed diamonds. You’ll often see sea turtles basking on the beach; keep your distance and don’t disturb them. Day 5: Rainbow Falls + lava tube 3. Akaka Falls — a 130-meter single-drop waterfall. On sunny days you can see a rainbow around 10:00 AM. There’s a mysterious cave behind the falls, said to be the home of the Hawaiian goddess Hina. 4. Thurston Lava Tube — a scene straight out of Jurassic Park. Free to enter and an easy way to get stunning photos. Day 6: Mauna Kea stargazing (the most spectacular part of the trip!) 5. Mauna Kea — arguably the best stargazing spot in the world. Arrive at the visitor center (2,800 m) before 4:00 PM to acclimate. Drive to the summit at 4,200 m for sunset, then head down to the stargazing site at night, where you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye. ⚠️ You must drive a 4WD, have at least half a tank of fuel, and bring a down jacket. If you’re not confident in your driving skills, strongly consider booking a guided day tour. 🌈 Maui · 2-day dream trip Day 7: Road to Hana — the world’s most beautiful driving route 1. Road to Hana — over 600 curves and dozens of one-lane bridges. Waterfalls, rainforests, cliffs, and black sand beaches along the way will leave you speechless. ⚠️ Rent a car, start before sunrise, download offline maps, and fill up in Kahului. Only experienced drivers should attempt this; novices proceed with caution. Must-stop spots: Twin Falls, Garden of Eden Arboretum, Wailua Falls, Waiʻanapanapa Black Sand Beach, Seven Sacred Pools. Day 8: Haleakalā sunrise 2. Haleakalā National Park — watch sunrise above the clouds, like standing on the moon. Mauna Kea’s road is very demanding on driving skills — if you’re not confident, join a tour instead of risking it 3. Only buy coffee labeled "100% Kona Coffee"; don’t buy blended impostors 4. Hanauma Bay is closed on Mondays and limited to 700 visitors per day — get there early 5. Don’t touch sea turtles and don’t ignore ocean safety warnings 6. I spent six nights in Kona, and during the intervals between volcanic eruptions, I visited all the main attractions. A 'P' person's vacation style, a 'J' person's itinerary summary 👇🏼 Accommodation: Outrigger Kona Resort & Spa D1: Captain Cook Snorkeling ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Departed at 8 AM, saw Hawaii's unique Spinner Dolphin pods on both the outbound and return trips. Looking at the Big Island from the sea offers a unique perspective; the sea water was like sapphire, and the colorful coral reefs seemed to glow. Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Went before closing at 4:30 PM. No one was selling tickets, just walked right in. Features Hawaiian-style chief carvings, traditional grass huts, and palm trees. D2: Black Sand Beach ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The black volcanic sand beach is magical. You can see many sea turtles basking on the black sand. Envious of the 'lying flat' sea turtles. Manta Ray Night Snorkel ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Departing from Keahou Bay, it only takes two or three minutes to reach the manta ray viewing spot, so no seasickness. If staying at Outrigger, you can walk three minutes to the manta ray tour departure point. Watching giant manta rays glide beneath you is incredibly stunning and dreamy ❤️ D3: Kona Farmer’s Market ⭐️⭐️ Just browse and try some subtropical fruits. A small market. Mauna Kea ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Rent a 4WD or join a tour to go up. Don't join a tour unless necessary. D4: Turtle Site of Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Giant green sea turtles leisurely bask in the sun here. Another day wishing I was a 'lying flat' sea turtle. Be sure to navigate to the turtle site, not the visitor center, as the latter is a walk of several tens of minutes from where the turtles are. Manini'owali Beach (Kua Bay) ⭐️ Nothing special, and it's very crowded with tourists swimming and surfing. D5: The volcano finally started bubbling and rolling lava, so I rushed to the Volcanoes National Park. Navigate to Devastation parking lot, then after parking, navigate to Keanakako'i Overlook. It's a 20-30 minute walk to the observation point.

When it comes to Hawaii's specialties, I think Kona coffee is definitely a business card. Kona coffee has a history of more than 200 years. Because of the island's climate and nutrient-rich volcanic soil, it is very suitable for coffee growth. Plus, the slope planting cannot be mechanized and can only be manually planted and harvested, so it produces the world-renowned Kona coffee. On the island, you will see many coffee shops with the words '100% Kona coffee' at the door, which is the local people's attitude towards life. Greenwell Farms was a coffee farm created by Henry Nicholas Greenwell in Hawaii after leaving England in 1850. As the largest and oldest coffee producer in Kona, they bring 100% Kona coffee to coffee lovers all over the world. Nowadays, many tourists come to the plantation every day. Through two private tours and tastings every day, green walkers understand how Kona coffee goes from seed to cup. In general, Kona coffee has a clear taste, slight acidity, mildness, strong aroma, and long aftertaste. Some people describe its flavor as the warm sea breeze of Hawaii and believe that medium roast can best bring out the flavor of Kona coffee. If you want to buy Kona coffee, be sure to pay attention to the text on the package. Only coffee marked 100% Kona is pure Kona coffee. If it is marked with Kona Blend, Style, Roast, it is not worth buying.

I believe that best snorkling spot is Captain Cook in Hawaii. So Amazing!! Beautiful alive coral, Many fish in shoals and Dolphin. Especially luckily you could see humpback whale. If You want to visit the Captain Cook, many visitors usually use tour ship or kayak for snorkling here.
