The “fossilized dunes” aren’t petrified wood; they’re old dune ridges cemented by calcium and vegetation, now cut by wind into ribbed walls you can touch. I went at 7 am: coastal fog (bruma) from the Canary Current wetted the sand so it didn’t blow, and the light was silver-grey, not postcard blue. Fuel up in Sal Rei before leaving—no stations past Rabil. Bring EUR cash for the quad deposit and a windproof shell; the fog hides the Atlantic until you’re 100 m from the shore. A rookie error: quads on soft dune faces without lowering tire pressure = stuck; drop to 1.2 bar. All the positive reviews were spot on! This hotel is absolutely fabulous. It has a fantastic location, with clean, modern rooms to enjoy. The breakfast offers a great variety of choices.
