2026 Budva Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in August)

There's a small town on the coast of Montenegro that doesn't make noise across the whole Adriatic shore like Budva or Kotor, but is, of course, fairly well-known too. It's Petrovac. We came here as a family in July, during the day, and had a wonderful, unhurried walk. Let me tell you how we saw it. 🌊 The promenade We started, like everyone, with the promenade. It stretches along the town beach and sets the mood right away, very calm, resort-like, without any fuss. Along it are cafes, restaurants, old houses with the characteristic coastal architecture. To the left the cleanest sea, to the right greenery and mountains, and this combination of trees, water and mountains in a single frame is simply delightful. What pleasantly surprised us for July, the height of the season, was how few tourists there were. After the noisy resorts, especially Budva, it feels like freedom, you can walk in peace, no one jostling you, and there's room for the child to run around. 🏰 The Castello fortress It stands right at the edge of the town, on a rise by the sea, and serves as its main symbol. It used to be a Venetian fortress, and now there's a museum inside. But the main thing here isn't even the walls, it's the view that opens up from them. All of Petrovac in the palm of your hand, and in the distance two small islets are visible out at sea. The edge of the fortress, the clear turquoise sea below, the green slopes all around, it's one of those places where you just stand and look, with no wish to hurry anywhere. 🏚️ The abandoned hotel We also walked as far as the abandoned hotel. This, by the way, is a characteristic feature of Montenegro: unfinished or abandoned buildings that investment simply never reached. On one hand it's a sad sign, on the other, a place like that has an atmosphere of its own, a little melancholic but picturesque. The child was curious, and honestly, so were we, there's something magnetic about those empty walls with a view of the sea. The water there is clear, of ideal purity, the beach is pebble. The path to it goes through a tunnel in the mountain, which also adds atmosphere to the walk. 💭 Overall impression Petrovac won us over precisely with its calm. There are no parties and clubs at every turn here, only slow rest, beautiful views and the feeling that you're in a real place, not one polished up for tourists. Ideal for a family with a child, everything's safe, unhurried, beautiful. If you're in Montenegro and feel like quiet instead of resort bustle, drop into Petrovac at least for a day. We left with a wonderful sense of peace. 💡 A few tips A few practical points that'll make the walk more pleasant: 🕐 When to go. We walked during the day, but in July the sun is harsh and there's not much shade on the promenade. It's ideal to head out closer to evening, towards sunset, when the heat eases and the views become even more beautiful. During the day, bring a hat and water. 👟 Footwear. The climb up to the fortress goes uphill over stone, and flip-flops aren't very comfortable for it. Better something sturdier on your feet, especially if you're with a child. 🚗 Getting there. Petrovac is small, and it's convenient to combine it with a trip from Budva, they're close by. You can make a day outing by taxi or car, you don't have to stay here specifically to get a feel for the place. 🏖️ Beaches. Besides the town beach, there's a more secluded bay nearby, Lucice, if you fancy a swim away from the main promenade. 🍽️ Food. There are lots of little fish restaurants along the promenade. Montenegro 🇲🇪 The most underrated country in Europe has already been talked about enough. Originally, I just thought since I was here, I’d add Montenegro to the last three days of my Croatia trip. But the atmosphere of the bays and ancient towns here surprisingly rivals that of the South of France or Southern Italy. Montenegro, this treasure small country on the Adriatic coast, offers an experience far beyond expectations with its beauty of mountains, sea, and towns… Quick itinerary overview: Day 1️⃣ Dubrovnik → Kotor → Budva: Take a bus from Dubrovnik’s main bus station directly to Kotor (actual travel time is longer than official estimates due to traffic along the Montenegrin coast). Then take a taxi to the car rental point (there’s no ride-hailing app, so you need to message the taxi company via WhatsApp to call a taxi). Drive to Budva and check in. Day 2️⃣ Budva → Perast: In the morning, head to Sveti Stefan Island (navigate up the hill to the church). Return to Budva for lunch at Restoran Vista Vidikovac, whose terrace overlooks the entire old town of Budva. After lunch, walk from the hotel parking lot to the Ballet Dancer statue for photos. Of course, our goal was to hit up as many gorgeous spots and towns as possible, both along the coast and high up in the mountains. · we spent a lot of time researching and managed to plan the trip absolutely PERFECTLY 😍 · 🔸Starting off, of course, with Kotor 🛥️ 2-3 days is plenty to explore the surroundings and take your time seeing everything! Hike to the top, try some traditional dishes, and soak in the vibes and beauty of the bay. Next up 🔸Budva, Sveti Stefan, Petrovac. We stayed in Petrovac for 2 days since it's way less touristy than the neighboring towns. 🔸Then onto some prime sunbathing spots: Bar, Susanj, and Ulcinj, which boasts tons of beaches right on the border with Albania. 2-3 days is enough for all of this (if you're planning an active trip). If you just want to lounge on the beach, you could stay longer. Just a heads up, these are definitely the more tourist-heavy spots ☺️ 🔸Moving on to the other side of the Bay of Kotor You should dedicate at least 3 days to Herceg Novi. I completely fell in love with this town—it’s quiet, peaceful, and stunning. Lots of places to walk around, spots to sunbathe, great cafes and restaurants, plus plenty of attractions nearby. From here, it's an easy trip to Perast, a tiny one-street town practically floating on the water. You can also head to Dobrota to grab some fresh farm-to-table mussels and oysters 🦪. Honestly, these spots are highly recommended, but they're best done as day trips 🔝 🔸Next stop - Mountainous Montenegro 🇲🇪 🏔️ We booked a place in Zabljak for 4 days to explore the area, and it turns out there’s so much to see! The drive from Herceg Novi takes about 4-6 hours, but it’s insanely scenic, so factor that into your plans 😃 On the way, make sure to swing by Podgorica to pick up some wine 🍷 (our friends love staying there since the airport is close, but there isn't really much else to do), and check out the Ostrog Monastery—ideally in the morning before the crowds hit. It's a gorgeous spot right where the mountains begin. 📍You absolutely have to make a pit stop nearby at the Panorama Lake Viewpoint with Cafe (the coffee ☕️ is just as amazing as the view), and the Piva Canyon viewpoint is another "wow" moment. Then, winding through tunnels and peaks, we made our way to the Sedlo Mountain Pass. We snapped a million photos and braced ourselves for a bit of a chill. Finally, here is the mountain town of Zabljak, where amazing local food, natural beauty, peace and quiet, crisp mountain air, and incredible hiking trails are waiting for you 🌲🐿️ 🥘 🔸Heading back to TIVAT via Kolasin - we stocked up on cheese and prosciutto for souvenirs at Vujisic prodavnica Zdrave hrane Kolašin, and then took a scenic, quiet drive down through Grebaje Valley back to the sea 🌊 Tivat really only needs 1-2 days max. Just enough time to stroll around the marina, check out the yachts, and unwind after the road trip. 📌Tips: Renting a car is an absolute must, ideally right from the airport, since a single taxi ride costs about the same as a full day's car rental (35-50 euros). Make sure to ask your hosts about the weather, especially in Zabljak. It might be a balmy +20°C at the coast but a freezing +4°C in the mountains. That's totally normal. Come prepared, or even the local liqueurs and hot soups won't save you 🥶🧣 🗺️ The route was breathtaking and filled with wonderful encounters with different people along the way. Distance from Old Town Budva to Sveti Stefan is about 9 km. Almost the entire route runs along the coast, passing through promenades and parks. There is only one 700-meter stretch where you'll need to walk along the highway. With stops, the one-way walk takes about 3 hours. Walking this route on your own is especially rewarding because you get to see so much along the way: the lively vibe of Budva, peaceful Bečići, cozy Rafailovići, the secluded Kamenovo Beach nestled among the rocks, Miločer Park, and, of course, the iconic Sveti Stefan. Unlike taking a bus or driving, walking gives you the freedom to stop at any beach, pop into appealing cafes, snap photos of the scenery, and explore at your own pace. 🏷 Budva — Bečići A pedestrian tunnel connects Budva and Bečići. First, stroll along Budva's Slovenska Plaža until you reach the tunnel entrance. Head inside, and in just 3 minutes, you'll pop out in Bečići. From there, head down to the promenade and keep walking right along the sea. 🏷 Bečići — Rafailovići The route then continues straight down the promenade through Bečići and Rafailovići. Rafailovići is packed with seaside cafes and restaurants. It's the perfect spot to take a break and grab lunch with a gorgeous coastal view. 🏷 Rafailovići — Kamenovo Walk to the end of the promenade in Rafailovići. You'll pass through a tunnel and emerge on a hill overlooking Kamenovo Beach. Head down and continue along the seaside promenade. Off in the distance to your right, you'll already be able to spot the island of Sveti Stefan. 🏷 Kamenovo — Pržno Just past Kamenovo Beach, a forest park begins. Look for a path leading uphill—follow it toward an abandoned sanatorium to reach the main highway. You'll have to walk along the road for about 700 meters. Once you see the "Przno" sign, take the path leading back down to the sea. 🏷 Pržno — King's Beaches In Pržno, continue walking along the shore, then turn onto the forest paths that lead to the King's Beaches in Miločer—one of the most scenic spots on the entire route. 🏷 King's Beaches — Sveti Stefan Right after the King's Beaches, climb the stairs and walk around the cliff. Just 300 meters later, the famous island of Sveti Stefan will appear right before you. Take the stairs down to the beach. Here you can: ✔️ relax on Sveti Stefan Beach; ✔️ grab lunch at one of the local cafes—like Vila Drago; ✔️ climb up to the observation deck and enjoy a coffee on the terrace at the Adrovic restaurant. 🏷 To get back from Sveti Stefan to Budva, you can: ✔️ catch a bus for about €2.50; ✔️ take a taxi for around €6-10; ✔️ walk back along the coast.
