It is located below Dunleary, but it is also famous for its beautiful sea views. If you climb to the top where the cross is, the view looking down is really beautiful! Key Points: I thought the hiking course was easy, but it was steeper than I thought. Also, if you go after it rains, make sure to bring hiking boots. Your shoes can get dirty in the mud, and it is slippery and dangerous. I recommend going on a clear day if possible! Saw three red deer hinds in the grass, no fence, no crowd. Mistake: I once arrived at 11 am on a Saturday — Upper Lake car park full, tour groups on the round tower steps. Pre-9 am is the only quiet Glendalough. Another mistake: driving Wicklow Gap in March without checking — ice on the summit bends, no salt, one lane. It's a summer/fall road for casual drivers. Pack a rain shell even in July; the Spinc boardwalk wind cuts cold. Worth it? Yes — Glendalough is the rare site where the free trails beat the paid museum, and Wicklow Gap adds a high bog meadow with wild deer for zero euros. Question: with the monastic ruins free and the deer meadow free, is the €5 museum the weakest link, or does it frame the stones you just walked?

Start by the Upper Lake shore, pass St Kevin’s Bed viewpoint, then climb along the river to the boardwalk section—about 380 m of ascent to the Spinc cliff edge. The boardwalk is the payoff: a wooden ribbon stuck to the hillside with the dark lake far below and the round tower by the monastery ruins in the distance. I hit low cloud for 20 minutes, then sun, then a shower—typical Wicklow. Descent is 600-odd wooden steps past Poulanass Waterfall back to the valley floor. No shops on the loop; bring water and a sandwich. Toilets and a small visitor centre sit near the Lower Lake. Payment in Ireland is card-friendly; car parks often take Tap-to-Pay. Mistake tourists make: doing only the 30-minute Poulanass stroll and missing the boardwalk. My opinion: the Spinc is the one walk here that gives you alpine feel without alpine danger. Wear trail shoes, not sandals—steps are wet. If you want solitude, go midweek or start before 9. Combine with a drive over the Wicklow Gap only if weather is clear; in mist it is just sheep and white lines.
