Key Points: I thought the hiking course was easy, but it was steeper than I thought. Also, if you go after it rains, make sure to bring hiking boots. Your shoes can get dirty in the mud, and it is slippery and dangerous. I recommend going on a clear day if possible! Saw three red deer hinds in the grass, no fence, no crowd. Mistake: I once arrived at 11 am on a Saturday — Upper Lake car park full, tour groups on the round tower steps. Pre-9 am is the only quiet Glendalough. Another mistake: driving Wicklow Gap in March without checking — ice on the summit bends, no salt, one lane. It's a summer/fall road for casual drivers. Pack a rain shell even in July; the Spinc boardwalk wind cuts cold. Worth it? The boardwalk is the payoff: a wooden ribbon stuck to the hillside with the dark lake far below and the round tower by the monastery ruins in the distance. I hit low cloud for 20 minutes, then sun, then a shower—typical Wicklow. Descent is 600-odd wooden steps past Poulanass Waterfall back to the valley floor. No shops on the loop; bring water and a sandwich. Toilets and a small visitor centre sit near the Lower Lake. Payment in Ireland is card-friendly; car parks often take Tap-to-Pay. Mistake tourists make: doing only the 30-minute Poulanass stroll and missing the boardwalk. My opinion: the Spinc is the one walk here that gives you alpine feel without alpine danger.
