Although the scenery was beautiful, the altitude gradually rose and the air became thin. Laigu Glacier is a natural scenic spot located in Ranwu Town, Babu County, Chamdo City, Tibet Autonomous Region, and is designated as a National Geopark. Laigu Glacier is the largest glacier group in the Yarlung Tsangpo River basin, consisting of six glaciers: Meixi, Yalong, Dongga, Ruojiao, Xiongjia, and Niuma, arranged in a U-shape, with the glaciers extending into the forested areas. Laigu Glacier features extensive ancient glacier relics and rich ecological landscapes, making it an important area for studying the climate and geology of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Self-driving route: Starting from Babu County, drive along the east bank of Ranwu Lake to the "Wacun" intersection, turn left towards the direction from Ranwu Lake to Zayü County, and continue about 15 kilometers to reach Laigu Village. The road from Ranwu to Bomi is the only road leading to Laigu; the road surface is good but has many curves, so please drive safely. Hiking route: Recommended hiking route: Laigu Glacier → Muze Glacier → Quta Temple (Nunnery) → Zhana Monastery (Buddhist temple) → Parlung Tsangpo River → Viewing platform (for a distant view of Midui Glacier) → Ranwu Lake → Wacun → Longbu Village (or return). Muze Glacier is the longest glacier within Laigu Glacier, and although the hiking route is relatively long, the scenery is more spectacular. Best viewing spots: 1. Laigu Glacier Viewing Platform: Located on the hillside south of Laigu Village, it is the best place to enjoy panoramic views of Laigu Glacier. 2. Parlung Tsangpo River: Traveling along the road by the Parlung Tsangpo River allows close-up views of the beautiful Yarlung Tsangpo River system. 3. Midui Glacier Viewing Platform: Located within the Midui Glacier scenic area, it is the best spot to view Midui Glacier. Notes: 1. Due to the high altitude of the Laigu area, it is recommended to undergo high-altitude acclimatization training in advance. 2. When hiking in winter, pay attention to keeping warm; it is recommended to wear non-slip shoes and windproof, cold-resistant clothing. 3. 🌟Stay in a Tibetan-style secret hotel under the snow mountain This hotel is located right by National Highway 318 on the Sichuan-Tibet Line, very close to Guxiang Lake, with the Jialong Gongmei Gamu Snow Mountain right behind it. The scenery is stunning! 🏞️ 🛏️The rooms are ridiculously spacious! Some rooms even have tatami mats and coffee machines, with views of snow-capped mountains and lakes outside the window—perfect for photos! 🤳‍♀️ 🍴The food is also delicious! In the evening, there are bonfire parties and Tibetan hot pot, creating an amazing atmosphere! 😍 1. If you want to watch the sunset, be sure to communicate the time with the hotel in advance; otherwise, if you’re still on the road at sunset, you’ll really miss it! 2. The overall architecture of the hotel is Tibetan style, so avoid dressing too modern, or it might feel a bit out of place. 3. It’s recommended to experience the hotel’s afternoon tea in the afternoon; sitting by the window watching the snow mountain is truly healing! 4. Tibetan Glaciers I’ve Visited So Far: 📍Midui Glacier: You drive in and then hike two kilometers to view the glacier from a distance. Not recommended, purely a waste of ticket money. 📍Karola Glacier: On the way from Yamdrok Lake to Shigatse, even less recommended—wouldn’t want to go even if paid. 📍Qudeng Nima: Very beautiful, but currently inaccessible. 📍Xianggelila Glacier: Southeast Tibet, drive to the checkpoint at the entrance, then walk a little over a kilometer to the lake. We didn’t enter the glacier itself, but I heard you can take a local Tibetan herder’s motorcycle inside. No entrance fee, which is important. 📍Laigu Glacier: I’ve traveled the route into Tibet countless times, but this was my first time entering Laigu. Before going, I heard various opinions about the ticket price, accommodation, and whether it’s worth visiting. Only after coming here myself can I speak about this natural glacier, one of the world’s three major glaciers. About Tickets: Uniform price: 150 RMB per person. Tickets are bought at the park entrance. If you stay in Laigu Village, you get a 65 RMB refund per person. Actually charged: 75 RMB for the ticket + 10 RMB insurance. If you stay in a village hotel, remember to get the owner’s stamp and then get a refund from staff at the entrance when you leave. I don’t know about staying outside the village, didn’t ask. About Accommodation: Except for Songtsam Laigu Mountain Lodge, all other accommodations in Laigu Village are Tibetan-style guesthouses. Prices aren’t very high, they have heating but it’s not very warm, and electric blankets are provided. The temperature in Laigu Village at night is very low, so it’s indeed a bit cold. If you can stay in Ranwu Town, it’s better to stay there as the accommodation conditions are better. The parking lot at the scenic area is less than two kilometers from the glacier entrance. If you don’t want to walk or have altitude sickness, you can ride a horse for 100 RMB per person round trip. About Access to the Glacier: You can! Before I came, I heard people say you can’t go on the glacier, can’t enter ice caves, and can only enter before 8 a.m.—all kinds of rumors flying around. After arriving, I found out: now you can walk on the ice surface, and there’s no need to be there before 8 a.m. Photos look better with sunlight, making the ice appear bluer. For the ice cave, there’s a queue to check in; remember to wear plenty of clothes because it’s really cold! Wearing non-slip shoes and bringing crampons is necessary. It snowed the night before we went, so the ice surface was covered with snow and luckily not slippery, but the ice cave was still very slippery. So bring crampons if you can—safety first. The blue ice photos online are all edited; the actual color visible to the naked eye isn’t that blue. If you’re obsessed with the online pictures, you don’t need to go specially. By the way, the Laigu Glacier ticket includes Yalong Glacier, which you can also enter, but I didn’t go there, so no tips. Staff said it’s accessible. So: Don’t get to know a person or a place through others’ words. It’s necessary to go see and understand for yourself. May we all grow into wise adults.
