A friend who works in Fukuoka took me to his private shop [かわのそば]. Looking at the name of the shop, I thought it was a ramen shop I didn't expect it to be a super rich izakaya, with skewers, kanto soup, pan-fried dumplings, crabmeat eggs, beef tongue, ramen, and a super variety of meals. I think this izakaya must be specially recommended to Taiwanese friends Because there is one great advantage: There is no seat fee/side fee (お通しOtoshi) that Taiwanese people don’t understand the most! And not drinking is perfectly OK, wanting to simply come for dinner is also suitable, children can come together. Items like ramen and rice pan-fried dumplings, crab meat and eggs are all that kids will love. (I love it too, because I have a child's mouth XDD) 🍢 Signature "Hakata ぐる Skin" must be ordered The chicken skin is rolled layer by layer on a bamboo skewer, roasted until the outer layer is fragrant, and the inside still retains the QQ oily tender taste. You can choose salt flavor, sauce or mentaiko mayonnaise, we ordered all three to eat, mentaiko mayonnaise is the most evil, rich flavor super shabu-shabu. 🦐 Salt grilled prawns are also grilled with a spray gun before serving, the aroma rushes out throughout. And it's made a grand opening on the 1st floor of the Nishi-Nippon City Bank Building right across from Hakata Station, super easy to get to! I checked it out right before noon on a weekday. There was a line, but it moved pretty quickly. Since it’s a fast-food spot, turnover is fast, so I got inside smoothly! You can order using a touchscreen kiosk or at the counter, and they totally support cashless payments ✨ For the touchscreen kiosk, you scan the buzzer tag yourself and take it with you. If you're not used to it, it might be a bit confusing at first! There are also Hakata-exclusive menu items! The Amaou Strawberry Shake comes with a Tirolian (a local sweet), and the French fries come with a mentai mayo dip. Being able to enjoy exclusive menu items unique to Fukuoka is a huge plus! Shake Shack's buns are yellowish, made with potatoes 🥔, and these fluffy buns are so good! The patty inside is super meaty and delicious! Personally, I highly recommend the HELLO PORTOBELLO 🍔! The melty cheese and mushroom combo was insanely good! Steam Shop Nakasu Branch Here you can purchase freshly baked donuts. They are incredibly fragrant and not greasy, so you can easily eat them even after a meal. There's a small bench inside where you can enjoy your donut, and the staff were very kind and even offered tea. I would definitely like to go again.

Mizutaki Restaurant Hakata Hanami-dori Hakata Ekimae Branch Their mizutaki (chicken hot pot) is especially recommended. It's particularly affordable at lunchtime. The soup in this mizutaki is exquisite! The small sip of soup that was brought out as an appetizer at the beginning I was surprised by how delicious it was! The soup in the mizutaki was so delicious that I wanted to drink every last drop. The fried chicken that came with the set was just as juicy and delicious as the main dish, and I wanted to eat several pieces. The service was also excellent, and it was a very comfortable place. It seems like you can easily go there even if you're dining alone. I think it's a good idea to make a reservation once you've decided on the day you want to go. I highly recommend it and would definitely want to go again!

The izakaya [Hakata Umihudo] near Hakata Station is absolutely insane. I was shocked by the first dish that hit the table: this Burdock & Cutlassfish Tornado Tempura. Wrapping a whole burdock root with cutlassfish and deep-frying it, it measures a whopping 50cm—super over-the-top! The burdock is perfectly crispy, while the cutlassfish inside is tender and flaky. This was honestly my first time trying this combo! 🦑 When visiting Umihudo, you definitely have to try the live squid sashimi sent directly from Yobuko, served two ways. The squid is julienned to be crystal clear, super sweet, and delightfully crunchy. After finishing the sashimi, the remaining parts can be made into tempura or salt-grilled. You get to enjoy three different textures from one single squid—absolutely no waste. 🐟 The limited-time rare salmon cutlet is Kai's absolute favorite, we're still craving it right now. The outer batter is fried to a golden crisp, while the inside remains medium-rare. All the rich fats ooze right out, making it incredibly sweet! It comes with a soft-boiled egg tartar sauce on the side, making it even richer when dipped. 🍚 The sea bream rice completely covered in salmon roe is straight-up criminal~ Serving an entire sea bream head right to the table is just so generous. The rice is piled high with salmon roe, every bite goes pop-pop-pop, mixing it all together is just pure satisfaction. 🍣 There's also a super unique salmon noodle dish! The salmon is literally sliced into long noodle shapes with a raw egg yolk in the center. You mix it all up and dip it in soy sauce. The fatty salmon combined with the rich egg yolk makes it incredibly smooth and sweet. Salmon lovers will absolutely die for this. 🐟 The grand finale is Umihudo's famous signature dish, the "Sea's Treasure Box (Umi no Tamatebako)". Glancing around the restaurant, every single table has this dish—a 100% order rate! A massive boat of sashimi arrives on a bed of ice, complete with a dramatic dry ice smoke effect, it's the ultimate Instagrammable dish. The tuna, salmon, and sea bream are all incredibly fresh and perfectly firm, Hakata Umihudo's menu includes Traditional Chinese and photos, which is super thoughtful, and the prices are clearly marked. ‼️ If it's your first time and you don't know what to order, here's a pro tip: Go for the Sea's Treasure Box, the live squid, and the 50cm burdock & cutlassfish. They are delicious and highly photogenic, leaving your camera and your stomach completely satisfied~ 🌟 Hakata Umihudo has an Otoshi charge of ¥480 per person, which is not expensive. It's a part of Japanese izakaya culture, serving as an appetizer fee and a seating charge. The appetizer cannot be returned, just think of it as a minimum spend and it's OK. When in Rome, do as the Romans do~

Shinkansen bullet train 🚄🚅🍱🍣🌸💮 Hakata 博多- Tokyo 东京 十站🚉 Around 5 Hours

Located along Watanabe Street in Hakata, slightly south of the Yakuin area, the hotel is convenient as there’s a Seven-Eleven across the street and several restaurants nearby. However, it does feel a bit far from bustling areas like Tenjin. Likely renovated, the overall design is new and stylish, even exuding a futuristic vibe with no trace of age. One standout feature is the completely unmanned shop. By registering your credit card in your room, you simply take what you want and leave, with automatic payment processing. However, the products offered mainly include original merchandise and quirky food/drinks, so I ended up shopping at the convenience store instead. The guest rooms are compact but functional, featuring a desk suitable for PC work. The chic hooks for small items on the headboard left an impression. The bathroom offers only a shower booth, but it’s clean and easy to use. Unfortunately, the pool and sauna are under construction and unavailable, which was disappointing. I’d like to try them out on my next visit.

After visiting Nanzoin Temple, we took the train to Uminonakamichi station. We strolled over to section 6 to admire the roses and the Flower Museum. Inside the museum, we enjoyed the glassworks crafted by glass artist Daisuke Takatomi. Additionally, there’s a flower clock alongside many other captivating garden displays. Near the children’s playground, we spotted a pleasant cafe. This destination truly offers a serene connection with nature. Our visit on May 10 even came with free entry. The return trip to Hakata took about 30 minutes.

Located just a 3-minute walk from Hakata Station's Chikushi Exit, this hotel is very convenient and surrounded by plenty of restaurants and convenience stores. It used to be my go-to place when staying in Hakata, and I decided to revisit after a while. The hotel has been renovated and is now beautifully maintained. The room design is reminiscent of a one-room apartment, with a semi-double bed and a long narrow table at the back, seemingly set up for two people. Towels and other amenities for two were also provided. At the front desk, I borrowed items like an eye massager, a hair-friendly dryer, and an aroma diffuser, along with firmer pillows and a desk lamp. I felt this was a very female-friendly hotel. Facilities such as a coin laundry, ice machine, vending machines, and a microwave are conveniently placed near the first-floor elevator. When I arrived soaked from a sudden downpour, the staff kindly offered me a towel, which I greatly appreciated.

Hakata Ekimae store, which just opened on July 21, 2026! ⁡ Both are their second locations in Fukuoka after Tenjin 🎀 Although they mainly focus on takeout, there were actually 16 eat-in seats available 🪑 ⁡ I found it pretty novel that you buy donuts using a ticket vending machine ✨ They had 5 new flavors of their famous "raw donuts." The premium matcha donut featured a bittersweet Yame tea cream that was incredibly delicious 🌿‬ ⁡ At dacō, you grab a tray and pick your own pastries. It has great access from Hakata Station, making it highly convenient for both sightseeing and business. After checking in, I used the guest-exclusive lounge service. You can enjoy soft drinks along with light snacks like Japanese sweets, warabimochi, and daifuku. From the evening, they even offer free alcoholic drinks such as beer, highballs, and wine—a wonderful perk for those wanting to relax at the hotel. The breakfast was packed with Hakata's local flavors, and I was absolutely satisfied! You can compare several types of mentaiko (spicy cod roe), from the classic to squid mentaiko, herring roe mentaiko, and mentaiko with grated yam—I couldn't stop eating my rice. They also served Hakata's famous motsunabe (offal hot pot), allowing you to fully enjoy Fukuoka's gourmet food right from the morning. Upon entering the modern lobby adorned with plants, I checked in and proceeded to my spacious room of over 30 square meters. With floor-to-ceiling glass walls, the room featured new furnishings like shelves, a TV, sink, and bath-toilet area, all styled in a simple yet thoughtfully designed manner. The hotel's top floor houses indoor natural hot spring baths and a sauna, as well as an outdoor heated pool and jacuzzi. Soaking in the heated pool under the cold rooftop sky, I enjoyed beautiful sunset and night views—a unique experience this hotel offers. On New Year's Eve, the lobby hosted a countdown live show featuring several singers, with free canned beer and soda offered to guests. The next morning’s New Year’s Day breakfast buffet delighted with classic Hakata specialties and a selection of traditional New Year's dishes, making the stay feel special compared to usual visits. This time, on our trip back home from Australia, we stayed at the Hotel New Gaia Yakuin in the Yakuin area, a little south of Tenjin. It was reasonably priced compared to other hotels, and we could use the lounge during our stay, which was a great convenience for my partner who enjoys drinking. For dinner, we walked about 10 minutes to Yakitori Yashichi. I used to frequent this yakitori restaurant when I worked nearby, and I highly recommend their Wagyu sagari (beef skirt steak). It's a bit pricey, but I'd say I came back from Australia just to eat this. The sweet and savory seasoning on the Wagyu beef is simply delicious. By the way, it's a popular restaurant, so I recommend making a reservation. After that, we walked a little further from Yashichi and had a drink at a food stall near VIBI Fukuoka. We enjoyed some yakiramen (fried ramen) and bite-sized gyoza (dumplings) as snacks, soaking up the tourist atmosphere. The next day, my partner, who was slightly hungover, requested ramen, so we went to "Menkuiya Yakuin Main Store." It was my first time at this ramen shop, but my partner said it was "the best tonkotsu ramen I've ever had." Indeed, the thick, large slices of char siu looked very appetizing. If you have the chance, you should definitely try it. Thanks to the extension of the Nanakuma subway line, Yakuin is now accessible from Hakata Station without transfers. It's a fun area for both shopping and dining, so please do visit!
