#uktrip Blackburn Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral Church of Saint Mary the Virgin with Saint Paul, is an Anglican (Church of England) cathedral situated in the heart of Blackburn town centre, in Lancashire, England. The cathedral site has been home to a church for over a thousand years and the first stone church was built there in Norman times. With the creation of the Diocese of Blackburn in 1926 (taken from the Diocese of Manchester), the impressive parish church of St Mary the Virgin was raised to cathedral status. The church, which was built in 1826 and designed by architect John Palmer, now forms the cathedral's nave. It replaced the parish church that was demolished in 1819–1820. In the early 1930s, fundraising began to enlarge the cathedral so that the building complemented its newfound importance. By 1938, enough money had been raised and work began on enlarging the new cathedral. Although work was interrupted by the war, it was resumed afterwards and continued through the 1950s and into the early 1960s. After the death of architect W.A. Forsyth in 1950, architect Laurence King joined the project and designed the distinctive lantern tower. The lantern tower, which consists of 56 different panes of coloured glass, with a modernist slender aluminium spire, was completed in 1967. The cathedral was finally completed in 1977 and what had been built over the past decades was finally consecrated as Blackburn Cathedral that year.

It is a museum with collections of Christian icons, Egyptian hieroglyphs, and local history, as well as those of the former Lewis Textile Museum. The museum is in a Grade II listed building, on the corner of Museum Street and Richmond Terrace. It was originally opened as an art gallery and library in 1874, with the library occupying the ground floor and the art gallery on the first floor. The building was enlarged in 1893. In the 1970s, the library moved to Town Hall Street providing more space for the display of the local and social history collections which formed Blackburn Museum & Art Gallery (hence the painted over "Library" on the iron entrance gate).

The town hall, which is the headquarters of Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, is a Grade II listed building. The foundation stone for the building was laid by Joseph Feilden of Witton Park, Lancashire, on 28 October 1852. The building, which was designed by James Patterson in the Italianate style and built by Richard Hacking and William Stones, was officially opened by William Hoole, the mayor, on 30 October 1856. The design for the front of the building involved Corinthian order columns on the first floor. It originally housed a police station with 18 cells, a large assembly room, and a council chamber. The town hall became the headquarters of the Municipal Borough of Blackburn on its completion, and the headquarters of Blackburn County Borough in 1889.

🚆 Taking the Train to Blackburn 2018 – Retracing Childhood Memories at Ewood Park A cloudy English morning. People stand quietly waiting for the train. The purple train slowly pulls into the platform. The doors open, embarking on a journey to a “small destination with big meaning.” Inside the carriage is simple. People sit reading books, chatting softly. They watch the red brick houses slowly drift past the windows. A scene of the countryside interspersed with old factories, truly English. 🧱🏘️ When the train arrives at Blackburn station. A small town, quieter than expected. I take a local bus, heading to Ewood Park. 🚌⚽ The sides of the road are lined with red brick houses, small shops, and old pubs. A homey atmosphere, but with the quintessential charm of traditional English football. ⸻ 🔵⚪ Blackburn Rovers – A Small Club with Great Memories Blackburn Rovers is one of the oldest football clubs in England. Founded in 1875, it was once a football powerhouse in the country's early days. Before their resurgence in the 90s under the sponsorship of Jack Walker, for me… the connection started without any reason. One day as a child, I saw the blue and white team “lose” to Manchester United in the 1994 Charity Shield. And I happened to support the losing team 😅 But the following season, they performed a miracle, winning the 1994–95 Premier League title 🏆 with the legendary duo Alan Shearer & Chris Sutton. Since then, Blackburn Rovers has become the “first club I ever supported” that I’ve always rooted for ❤️ ⸻ 🏟️ Arriving at Ewood Park… even without the cheers, I walked past the Roverstore, past the club’s historic wall, and the statue of Jack Walker standing with his arms outstretched to welcome the fans. Even though there’s no match today, no music, no flags waving, no shouting cheers, but the silence… is strangely warm. It’s like a return visit. “A Home in My Memories” 🏠 I stood silently gazing at the stands, imagining the day the stadium would be packed with people. Thinking of the nights when this small team once dethroned the league's giants. It's a little regrettable that I didn't come on a match day. But perhaps… seeing it on such a peaceful day allows us to “apply the meaning” of the place even more. ⸻ ✨ The Conclusion of the Journey This trip wasn't about visiting famous cities. Not about world-class landmarks. But it was a journey back to 👉 “the first team in my life.” From a kid watching football on TV, to someone who took a train across town to stand in front of the actual stadium. 🚆 And one day… I hope Blackburn Rovers will return to the top league again. 💙⚽ #BlackburnRovers #EwoodPark #FootballTrip #FootballMemories

My trip to Blackburn began the best way possible — with a hearty Spoons breakfast 😋 (after finally finding somewhere to park!). Once fuelled up, I headed straight to one of the UK’s newest cathedrals. Blackburn Cathedral became a cathedral in 1926, making it one of the youngest in England, yet the site has over a thousand years of Christian history behind it. Inside, the atmosphere felt bright and peaceful, with modern artwork beautifully blended into the traditional architecture. Entry is free, though donations are appreciated. After leaving the cathedral, I wandered over to the indoor market, which was full of life. So many stalls, food spots and amazing smells — honestly tempting enough to make anyone hungry again! 😋 From there, I walked into The Mall, a mix of well-known brands and independent shops. My final stop was the Blackburn Museum & Art Gallery. A really enjoyable visit with some impressive artworks — even spotted a Hornel, which was a nice surprise 😍. There was also a fascinating temporary exhibition called The Nature of Gothic, featuring rare books and manuscripts from the Hart Collection alongside pieces loaned from national institutions. And best of all, entry was free. Despite the freezing weather (and the rain that followed 😅), Blackburn turned out to be a lovely place to explore.

Ewood park, the home of the 1995 premier league champions, Blackburn Rovers is a true classic English football ground dating back to the 19th century. The moment you enter the stadium you can really feel its history and the atmosphere at a championship football game here will give you a true experience of the English game. #celebrateit #football #stadium

A wonderful day trip out to blackburn for a delicious nandos for some loaded fries and a bottomless coke followed by a shop around in primark and H&M. A visit to blackburn cathedral and a wander around its site left me in a great mood due to the fabulous warm weather and bright sunshine. bought some earrings and got a fresh helix piercing so all in all a best day. #travel

Modern, clean hotel with comfortable rooms. What really stuck out is how nice the staff were. They all seemed so happy and genuinely enjoying their jobs which showed in the customer service. Special shout out to Josh on reception. Breakfast was very tasty with a range of continental options and traditional cooked breakfast. Was pleased with the quality of the breakfast items. Some hotels buffet options taste like they come from the value range, but not here.

Great hotel with great service , hotel located minutes away from the main square , and right next to a shopping centre . We had booked a panoramic room with a view , room was spacious and beds comfortable. Very reasonably priced to. Would definitely recommend
