There are over 130 caves and nearly 2,000 stone statues scattered across the towering cliffs, divided into the Great Buddha Cave, the Thousand Buddha Cave, the Arhat Cave, the Zhangba Buddha Cave, and the Monks' Quarters. The Great Buddha Cave was built by Emperor Taizong of Tang to commemorate the soldiers who fell in the Battle of Binzhou. Inside, you'll find early Tang-style Buddha statues. The posture of the Amitabha stone statue, combined with the contrasting sculpting styles of different dynasties, creates a uniquely striking beauty. Rounding a mountain ridge, a cluster of gray-tiled roofs and walls suddenly appears – not ordinary farmhouses, but 19 courtyard houses in Chengjiachuan, neatly arranged in the valley like an open old book. Grandpa Liu, guarding the entrance, saw us peeking in and waved with a smile: "Come in, it's free! These houses are meticulously built; the brickwork is even more precise than a ruler." Sure enough, walking on the newly paved bluestone slabs, each courtyard house exudes the stubborn spirit of ancient Bin architecture. On the roof ridge of the main house, several gray pottery mythical beasts perch, their tails raised higher than elsewhere; the window frames of the side rooms are carved with "swastika" patterns, the lines sharp and brittle, as if carved directly into the wood with a chisel. There's a "Brick Catalogue Wall" in the scenic area, displaying old bricks collected during the renovation. It is the largest grotto group in Shaanxi Province and has the largest Buddha statues, known as the "Number One Wonder of Guanzhong." There are more than 130 grottoes and over 1,980 statues preserved. The statue styles inherit from the Northern Dynasties and Sui Dynasty, and influence the flourishing Tang, Five Dynasties, and Northern Song periods. The main Buddha image is Amitabha Buddha, replacing Shakyamuni, reflecting the Sinicization of Buddhism. The grottoes are mainly divided into five parts: the Great Buddha Grotto, Thousand Buddha Cave, Arhat Cave, Zhangba Buddha Grotto, and Meditation Cave. 🌟Great Buddha Grotto A typical representative of early Tang Dynasty caves, it is the largest and most exquisite grotto from Emperor Taizong’s period still existing in China. The huge Buddha statues seem bottomless, and the flying apsaras and flame patterns in the backlight show exquisite detail. Among the entire grotto group, the Great Buddha Grotto, Thousand Buddha Cave, Arhat Cave, Zhangba Buddha Grotto, and Monk’s Quarters Cave are the most spectacular representative grottoes.
