The vibes here are unreal: that main pool is so blue it looks fake, but trust, it’s legit thanks to all that ferrous sulfate. A Japanese onsen isn't just a bathhouse, it's a whole ritual and one of my favorite parts of traveling in Japan 🥹 Especially after long walks – there's simply no better way to relax your body. But there's a catch: onsen have very strict rules, and if you don't know them, you could find yourself in an awkward situation (or even not be allowed in at all). Save this cheat sheet before your trip 👇 ▪️ Onsen = a hot spring with natural mineral water from underground. They are often located in incredibly beautiful places – forests, mountains, with views of a river or Mount Fuji. ▪️ You must enter a public onsen completely naked – swimsuits are prohibited. Before bathing, you must thoroughly wash yourself in the shower area. ▪️ Onsen are almost always separated by gender. If you feel uncomfortable going to a public onsen, book a private onsen. ▪️ Tattoos are a big problem 🚫 You can't enter many onsen with them. They don't take reservations, so you have to walk in directly. I went there for dinner and there was quite a long line. Waited about 20 minutes to get a seat. ⁡ ✤ Special Tempura Bowl (Tokujo Tendon) - 2 Shrimp It was my first time seeing shrimp tempura with "wings" (extra crispy batter)! I thought the extra batter would be greasy, but it actually had a crispy, snack-like texture. The shrimp were also quite large. Yufu) and stop to take photos at the beautiful ridge viewpoints. Afternoon: Arrive in Beppu and take a tour of the famous hot springs, Beppu Jigoku Meguri (The 8 Hells of Beppu). Must-see highlights include the cobalt blue Umi Jigoku and the blood-red Chinoike Jigoku. Evening: Relax in Beppu and try the hot spring steam-cooked food (Jigokumushi). ☀️Day 3: Kayaking at Takachiho Gorge Morning: Depart early in the morning and head to Takachiho Gorge in Miyazaki Prefecture, a mysterious basalt gorge formed by volcanic lava. Afternoon: Rent a kayak to see Manai Waterfall (Minainotaki) from below (booking online in advance is highly recommended). Afterward, stop by Takachiho Shrine. Evening: Travel to Aso for an overnight stay. ☀️Day 4: Mount Aso Morning: Drive up to the Daikanbo observation deck to take in the breathtaking views of one of the world's largest volcanic calderas. Afternoon: Visit Kusasenri, a vast grassland with the volcano as a backdrop. Then, drive up to see the Mt. Aso Nakadake Crater and its white sulfur smoke. (Always check the crater's open/close status before going up due to volcanic gases). Evening: Drive to Kumamoto City for the night. ☀️Day 5: Exploring Kumamoto City Morning: Visit Kumamoto Castle, one of Japan's three premier castles, and enjoy shopping around the castle at the Jionji area. Afternoon: Drive to Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine, a mystical shrine hidden in a moss-covered forest with stone lanterns lining both sides of the path, famous for being a setting in a popular anime. Evening: Relax and take a walk around Kumamoto City. ☀️Day 6: Heading Back to Fukuoka Morning: Drive from Kumamoto back to Fukuoka. Afternoon: Return the rental car at the center, then switch to public transportation for convenience in the city. Visit Tochoji Temple to see the largest wooden Buddha statue in Japan. Evening: Go shopping in the Tenjin area or Canal City Hakata, and wrap up the trip by dining at a riverside food stall (Yatai). ☀️Day 7: Wandering around Fukuoka and preparing to return to Thailand

📍Yunotsubo Street🚶‍♀️ I went right in the middle of Golden Week. It was crowded, but not insanely packed. We woke up early and got there before the shops opened, so the parking lot was empty🅿️ Around lunchtime, it gets completely jammed with people and cars to the point where you can't even drive through, so I highly recommend making the effort to get there early❗️ 📍Yufuin Milch This was the only place we had to wait in a long line for while snacking our way through town❗️ Even though it's cheesecake, it's so light you could eat a bunch of them😋 They have both warm and cold options, so you can share or easily devour one all by yourself. They had a variety of flavors like chocolate and matcha, too. 📍Okamotoya Kiosk The chicken tempura (toriten) here is absolutely delicious! We navigated the mountain roads using Google Maps⛰️ I definitely recommend driving a compact car (Kei car)🚗 Though, if you stick to the well-paved roads, larger cars can make it too🚙 During the lunch rush, traffic was terrible and the parking lot was full. The only spot left was a compact-only space, which is why I recommend taking a compact car (saying it for the second time). But the chicken tempura was so freaking good that you totally forget about the parking hassle🐓 You can also get it to go〜🥡 📍Midori Factory Direct Shop Maybe it was because of Golden Week, but we waited in a massive line🏃‍♂️➡️ Apparently, the lines aren't usually this long. The lines for soft serve ice cream and fried bread are separate, so it's best to divide and conquer! It's so cheap and delicious that it's totally worth the wait🫶 Definitely keep this in mind as a reference when you visit Oita〜
